    Juin Tech or TRP HY/RD


    Hello 👋 I have a Triban RC120 and I am working on a project to convert it to a 1x gravel bike.

    The stock mechanical disc brakes are rubbish and I want to upgrade them to something better. I already have a pair of mechanical brake/shift levers so I want to stick with cable brakes.

    My Triban RC520 road bike uses TRP HY/RD, and they are absolutely brilliant and reliable. The only problem is that they cost twice as much as the Juin Tech brakes (R1). The Juin Tech brakes, however, do not have an extra hydraulic fluid reservoir. I want to take the RC120 for bike packing after the conversion and I’m afraid that the Juin Tech might get overheated on long descends. I live in a hilly area so reliable braking is a must for me.

    Does anyone have any experience on the Juin Tech brakes? Are they reliable? Do they get overheated in long descends? How do they compare to the TRP HY/RD?

      do you life near berlin? if i see your trail probably not. 😀
      i could offer you some golden oniriis, which are more or less the same like the juin tech.

      thing is the TRP have a reservoir which helps with long descents when oil gets warm.
      the juintech dont have this.

      I never could get the Juin Tech adjusted and working properly. LBS said the same thing when they tried to adjust them. Shame, too, because they were much lighter than the Hy/RD’s.

      I put the Hy/RD’s back on and they’ve been flawless.

      Juin-Tech! Half the price, just as good functionality, less maintenance, smaller and lighter.

      I have Juin Tech on my gravel bike and they are indistinguishable from the 105 full hydraulics on my commuter and the GRX full hydraulics on my wife scrabble bike

      Check ebay for OEM TRP HY/RDs. Just be sure to get the correct mounting type Post Mount or Flat Mount. I don’t recall which the Triban uses.

      Whichever you can get for less money. Both are fine. I have juintechs on 2 bikes. The old R1s and their new F1-S. The new ones have a gap adjuster knob that’s a big improvement over the older designs. Also, I’ve never had an issue with overheating on my commuter even when weighed down with packages, groceries, gear etc.

      I have Juintechs with Shimano rotors, compression less housing, & TRP levers on a bike. They work really well. I’d buy them again since they are so affordable & perform well.

      I assume that additional reservoir aids in keeping temps down?

      Recently switched out an initial set of [original?] R1 for another new R1. Had the first set for around 4 years. Read in a few places the piston seals on that design would eventually start to degrade. Over time toward the end of this period the piston would begin to not detract fully. Eventually I decided to crack them open using a bleed kit, and performed a full bleed. May have very slightly improved the piston retraction.

      Thought I’d had a good overall run with them, so decided I’d just get a new set.

      For a little while I ran finned pads from some Euro? brand which did improve long downhill run braking a little. But overall, I didn’t ride the brakes, and weigh 60kg. This is with a light load on the bike.

      I like to have the clearance between piston and rotor small. Often on a new set of pads they are a little tight with fit, so I’ve learned to run them across sandpaper until I get the initial clearance and lever feel I want.

      Always used Jagwire compressionless brake/housing hit, which gets the best lever feel out of the whole setup.

      The latest R1 has a re-designed adjustment knob. Vaguely remember reading somewhere they’d improved the internals also.

      So, hard to say in your case. That extra reservoir may still tilt thing in the TRP favor.

      Have the Juin techs on my Flaanimal for ~3 years, 5kish miles now and haven’t had any issues. No overheating issues with a loaded bike on California hills either. Got some nice compression less housing and it’s been great
