Showing my ignorance here. Gear shifter placement is different than my old bike. I don’t think I’m currently using them the right way as it’s not easy to move my thumb between the two quickly. Posting pic of new and own bike below. Thanks.

SRAM has two thumb paddles. The other, maybe Shimano, maybe Microshift, has thumb and forefinger paddles. So you would take your finger off the brake to shift up.
