Should be interchangeable on a road bike with a 12mm TA. Bigger TAs won’t let you mount the left one because the cassette tool doesn’t fit. Just make sure it clears your fork.

After further research it appears that they are interchangeable, however the internal splined lockering on the left is only compatible with 12 mm thru axles, well the lock ring on the right can support axles. So in my case it appears I can do is either lockring.

Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

depends. works on my road and gravel bike did not work on my brother’s C 64. not enough clearance had to use the left style

  4. Just went through this with a new wheelset. Internal spline lock rings did not have enough clearance for the tool and the shimano external spline rings rubbed the fork. Had to get a thinner external spline locking- JagWire ended up being the one that worked.

Mostly, the outer ring will rub some of the narrow fork of the road bike. The inner lock ring is the same as the cassette ring. If you have the spare cassette, you can replace it.
