Less expensive cranks are often riveted, so the chainrings cant be replaced.

If you go to [si.shimano.com](https://si.shimano.com/en/) and you enter the part number (something like FC-MT60, which would be stamped on the inside of the crankarm, possibly near the pedal threads) you can see an exploded view diagram that will tell you the details of the crankset and the bolt circle diameter if its not a riveted crankarm.

If you want 1×9 just set the front derailleur to which ever ring you want in the front and then remove the cable. You’ve got a 1×9 and the front derailleur acts as a chain guide

The crank is riveted. It really depends on how much you want to spend on the bike and what you’re going to be using it for. You can probably cobble together a conversion for $150 or so. After that, you’re going to have to do something about your fork as it’s cheap and likely not working great. One of the dirty little secrets of suspension is that it’s prone to failure and requires maintenance.

  4. Just so you are aware, they make modern bottom brackets and cranks that fit if you want to get a little crazy. Or you could buy an upgraded period correct crank for not too much money.

I went with SRAM NX on mine.

  5. You are going to be limited to a small cassette, 1x would really restrict your total gear range

Forget the 1x setup for now. I would swap that fork, maybe one w disc mounts too, get a new wheelset. that would improve the ride the most. Get quality hubs.
