Is this normal? For reference i am engaging the crank and then backing off to allow the freehub to spin before engaging again. The clunk happens everytime I apply torque through the back wheel. I don’t remember it being this loud.

I checked the crank/BB for play, and there is none. Even if I spin the rear cassette by hand it makes this noise.

  1. Congratulations, you’re probably about to get a new freehub.

Take the cassette off, take the freehub off and examine the freehub for damage. Also examine the pawls on the hub.

I used to get this on an alloy Chris King hub. I ignored it until I stripped the whole thing. If you do have to replace the freehub and you can choose between and alloy model and a more expensive steel model, the steel is totally worth it.
