Hi! I was going to change my rim tape and sealant today in my 29″ plus sized rims (SUNringlé Duroc 50 SL) when I noticed corrosion around several holes where the spokes are tightened.
Slowly the aluminum is getting eaten away. I belief it has something to do with corrosive sealant and moisture getting beyond the tape and getting trapped in these spaces.
Any advice on what to do next or how to avoid this?
Adding magnesium for cathodic protection? 😉

Thanks!

Use something other than Stan’s sealant.

Orange seal works great, Muc Off makes some good stuff too. Neither of those will destroy your wheel.

  2. Do you use Stans? Apparently it is the worst for this. Also gorilla tape is allegedly worse than proper rim tape.

  3. I’ll keep using this wheel though for now. It looks nasty yes but structurally i think it’s still good to go.
