My local dump has a scrap pile that I pilfer when I dump my trash. I have commonly found little gold nuggets of misc. parts ie. Heavy duty caster wheels, a brand new tailgate grill, vehicle seats, gas tanks, and even pulled out a mid-grade 2010ish complete DiamondBack bike. Today, like any other I make my rounds on the scrap and see the usual assortment of rusty walmart bikes that I usually get out and check for salvage parts, but then a bright yellow “S” peeked out at me from under some sheet metal. I thought “no way.” and much to my delight I exhumed this 1988 Rockhopper Comp, the paint is beat up but the 19” frame looks strait. It makes me ill to think how many bitchin’ old bikes get thrown into scrap piles. I’m thinking I want this to be a 26” wheel, fattest tires possible, 1x, fun bike. I’d love suggestions for the build. I currently have a Trek 3700 MTB that I think I’m gonna cannibalize for most of the parts.

You gonna need some U brakes or vintage roller cams for that chainstay mounted rear brake, that will need a short pull brake lever

Nice find! I paid 100$ for mine. This is her before I stripped her down. I was going to keep her stock but found a good deal on some wheels and a GX group set 🤷🏽♂️. So 1×12 it is.
Mine needed decals but the paint was in good shape. She’s a 1×7 beach cruiser now.

I vote coaster wheel fun bike. I did that on my 88 hard rock and could squeeze a 2.3 tire first and rear. Kept the front brake because that bike also had trailer duty.
