Bobcat Trail was entry. It’ll be Cro-Moly and possibly Acera group set (I can’t remember what it was called then). Tended to have gripshift shifters. That’s not the original saddle, bar ends nor pedals but worryingly I think those are the original tyres!

Quite popular mid-90s, solid frames. Saddle looks like Selle Italia, good profile on the tires. I’ve seen these tires before – Panaracers? Brakes and levers look like Shimano LX. Anyway, for £30 a no brainer, parts are probably worth more.

That bike is certainly worth more than that.
Else, it depends on the project. Some projects just need a good bike, this is absolutely a good bike. Some projects warrant getting the best bike you can get (and can get away with). You’re not likely to find a better bike for less than $150. But if a project is a long term relationship with a bike, years in one can regret having not chosen a better base to build on.
Good bike, great deal. Good for projects, not ideal.

Marin guy here. the frames run a bit large, but they are solid bikes. for 30 bucks its a steal. and it looks awesome and in great shape.

I have the exact same bike i coverted to a single speed and its suprisingly light, threw some thick slicks on it for flying round the city i live in
Got it for £50 with the original ritchey rock rims etc and put an old stx crank on it with some cheap turquoise mtb flats and grips to match the anodised bits
