While I was in Tokyo I decided to rent a Brompton and spend a day cycling around Tokyo Bay.
I rented the Brompton from a shop called believe whose website is here: https://www.city-believe.com. The shop is a bit out of central Tokyo but easy to reach on the tube and a good local area for cycling.
I contacted them via their website and communicated via email (in English) with a very helpful lady called Megumi. She was incredibly helpful and it was a very smooth setup.
Megumi helped arrange rental of the Brompton and was also able to provide a lock and bike bag (if you need to go on the subway with the Brompton it seems you’re supposed to put it into the bag). They also provided maps of local routes to get you going.
I did just over 70 km in the Bay Area on the Brompton and actually never ended up going on the subway. I find exploring a city / area on a bike away from the usual tourist places is a great way to see stuff you wouldn’t normally see.
Cycling in Tokyo is pretty easy – there are a few things like normally cycling on the pavement and crossing roads via pedestrian crossings that feel a bit weird but it’s very safe. All of that makes a Brompton a good choice for a bike to tour Tokyo.
This was one of the best things I did in Tokyo and highly recommended.
PS – I now have more pictures of a rented Yellow Brompton in Tokyo than of my children.

PPS – Shimanami Kaido on a Brompton next!
I took my Brompton to Japan at end of last year and cycled around with my girlfriend. Had a great time!
