My Girlfriend let a kid ride her step fathers bike and he wrecked it, she asked me to fix it before he found out. I know nothing about bikes but would appreciate your help
The black thing changing gear is called a rear derailleur, which moves the chain to. change gear. It is either attached to the frame or a derailleur hanger depending on the bicycle.

Rear derailleur. What’s actually broken? I don’t see any obvious damage in the picture. Unless you’re absolutely determined to fix this yourself, just take it to a bike shop. Might be something extremely simple.

If you need to ask for one in a bike shop, it’s pronounced “de-rail-yer” 👍🏻

You can’t just replace it… It will need to be properly adjusted, which can be frustrating for a first-timer. Online videos may get you through it, if your mechanically inclined.

It’s a derailleur, but the lowest end u can get. If ur up for it u should replace it with a Shimano Altus it’s a huge step in quality for the price and headache of ur current one. I would have a mechanic do it tho since it takes some keen adjusting. If u really wanna do it urself, than go for it though.
Also since it was wrecked the derailleur hanger is likely bent. There’s a specific tool to adjust it perfectly but bending it with ur hand can sometimes get it within range too.

Its called a shitty derailleur.
You can get proper ones for 10-20 bucks. Used rd-m510 or a Chinese rd-m390 clone from aliexpress is better.
