I’m clueless about bikes too. Take the chain off and pedal. Does the noise exist? It’s a bearing in the crank would be my guess.

Either the front derailleur needs to be adjusted or it’s just from you cross chaining

I think…
The chain is trying to get on the cog on the back wheel.
Try adjusting the gear cable tension with the wee doo hickey on the rear derailleur and see if that helps.

You are just cross chained. If you are on the smallest front gear and the smallest rear gear they don’t line up well and you get this rubbing sound. Same for the biggest front gear and biggest rear gear. Shift the rear to a middle gear and see if the sound goes away.
