I’m afraid I damaged the piston (or the seal?) when I pressed the pistons back with a wrench (which I did often times before) to gain a bit more space for new brake pads.
Is this fixable? It doesn’t look like the piston is cracket or anything. Or do I need an new caliper?
Best bet is a new caliper. It shouldn’t be leaking obviously. Either the seal, the piston, or the bore is damaged. A new caliper is your best and easiest option. Don’t stress about it, sometimes it just happens. You didn’t do anything different than most techs would do. Depending on how old your bike is it might be covered under warranty. There is a brake pad spreading tool you can get, leave the pads in next time and use the tool first. This way you push on the pads and not directly on the pistons. I wouldn’t say it’s required but it’s a better way.
New caliper time. Had this issue with Shimano mountain bike brakes. I would suggest considering Hope RX4+ calipers as they make them for Shimano systems and have better modulation, overall power, come in colors, and the piston seals are notably better.
