50T chainring with 11-50T cassette?! Poster says it has 126 chain links with he’s using an M5100 deore RD. He posted a video with the shifting performance and it does seem pretty smooth with no cross chaining. What would be the long term effects of this setup on the drivetrain?

Derailleur has more tension on it, even if it’s not pulled to max. The longer the chain, the less clean the shifts will actually be. It can look fine on video, but in practice, generally is not wonderful. It will probably work for quite a while, but why exactly would you want to do something like this.
Larger than 46t chainrings on an MTB seems silly. It’s not like you’re going to need the 50:11 gear ratio for anything.
I checked BikeCalc: 90rpm, 2″ tires, 50×11 gets you about 50km/hr. That and a 1:1 low gear doesn’t seem too crazy for an 1x road/dirt machine.
Long life and low drag.
Less chain tension, less chain bending.
If ground clearance isn’t an issue and one has the legs for it, then this looks like a great setup.
