Rick Steves’ Europe © 2023 | After Rome fell, Europe spent a thousand years in its Middle Ages. Its art shows how the light of civilization flickered in monasteries and on Europe’s fringes: Christian Byzantium, Moorish Spain, and pagan Vikings. Then, around A.D. 1000, Europe rebounded. The High Middle Ages brought majestic castles, radiant Gothic cathedrals, and exquisite art that dazzled the faithful and the secular alike. It's real delight❤❤❤ Great thanks❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you Rick Steves. Sooo happy to watched your vlogs.Keep it up😘
Kudos to your superb combination of research, script and photography. Very special praise for the not so obvious facts you inserted deftly, such as the devolution of the Crusades into commercial exploitation.
oh, why do your videos always look old money color, so nostalgic when watching it?
My goodness. I respect the place of religion, but please name the video’s appropriately. This was about religion and some of its effect on art, it was not about art itself. Please stop being so preachy, unless it’s titled correctly so the viewer knows what they’re being presented with.
22.10.2023.Very good and best..Thank you.
I'm impress by the quality of this video and also showing half upper body instead of the to usual full body shot in their old format. This is the best lecture, you don't to attend university, just watch the new Rick Steve's show. Thank you Rick and your crew for creating this educational video.
Beautiful. Informative. Entertaining. What more could I ask for? Maybe more.
Rick Steves is the reason I studied in Italy for one year and now I’m literally moving there😅 So happy he’s back!
Without humankind, golden summer lawns
become the thunder’s empty opera house.
Love was something to slow our lungs’ applause,
erupting in our chests to cross our mouths.
Who else but children would rotate the globe?
and know no names of countries whirling past.
Who else will give the kittens strayed a home?
to lend the comfort promised in our lap.
Some minty arctic hoards the northern lights.
And you, well-mannered, nurse a nervous dream;
something within a smile too polite;
a stewardess on Planet Earth’s retreat.
But please don’t underestimate yourself,
but ask amazed, “who else… who else… who else.”

Dear Mr Steves, although I have often appreciated your efforts in explaining European arts by means of your books and videos, I can’t forget that many years ago, some of your comments about Naples made me very, very sad. Nothing personal, though, it’s hard to endure this memory of your otherwise generous positive commitment in observing the best that communities has been offering through centuries.
This is the best channel on youtube❤
Mr.Rick Steves, your grand style of presenting your travel videos is quite fascinating ! It's a pleasant experience to watch your videos as you have a thorough knowledge of History and your presentation is very free flowing !
I, myself, had been a student of History but back then, it seemed to be a very raw and dry subject, reading it within the classroom environment.
Now,due to the visual effects and your unique way of presentation makes it quite interesting and i enjoy the every bit of it !
Sir, thank you so much !
Amazing documentary, thanks for sharing!
If the middle ages lasted 1,000 years.and ended in the year 1,500 a.d. or so. We are here now in year 2023 so this means we are roughly 500 years older and progressive than we were by the end of the middle Ages. The events which took place during the mid-term of the thousand years middle ages, about the five hundred years mark. These events may possibly havebthe capacity to foretell the swells and truns we are currently surviving through and living with.
I believe Social Media and the Medieval Wheel of Fortune are capacitating us humans further towards ever deeper and deeper progress. This could be true; if we were to choose to do so. Lol-

I would just die if Rick Steves ask me to be a human cathedral😂. He's an OG
Was the stained glass in Sainte Chappelle and Chartres removed during WWII?
Les reliques de Saints, cela va trop loin et fait peur. C'est la mort. Pas le bâton de lumière. Très beau documentaire !
I always liked this guy despite his jabs at those delightful medievals… I recently learned he abandoned his wife and it's not the same watching his show.
Yes believe amen tankyou very much 🙏🌻🌻🙏
Many of the Nordic churches are in the shape of a pine tree, the tree of Ygrdrasil. I got to amble through Sainte Chapelle and Notre Dame in 1974. These gothic Cathedrals always fill me with wonder.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! 🙏
Finally, an older Rick Steves is back !
Thank you Sir.
Thank you for the knowledge. European art and architecture are the best 👌
Ulm has a beautiful cathedral. We drove there several times when my father was doing genealogy research.
Thank you very much for this very well done video
Making European art as dull as dishwater.
Focus on travel.
Leave the art to those who can make it enjoyable.
I think there is an arrogance in Rick that he feels he can pontificate on art in the same way he can on finding the best accommodations.
It ain't so.
I have a strong art history background from living in Europe and prep school and post secondary work.
find old Sister Wendy or any of the museum channels where people who KNOW art, LOVE art, and can articulate the life around the art are doing a great job (the Met in the UK does an amazing job)
Rick must be tired of overpriced hotels and thinks this is a good idea. Nope.
Art of middle age. Thanks for your great contents.
Rick: A unicorn or two?
Me: I’m in 🤣🤣🤣
Actually, a little point has to be made about how the different types of arch discharge their weights on the pillars. Oppositely to what is said in the documentary, the lack of the horizontal termination of the round arch in the pointed arch used in gothic architecture lets the weight be transmitted to the sustaining structures more downwards than outwards. That's the great structural advantage that the gothic arch gives, since gothic architects were able to reduce to the bare minimum the thickness of the walls – also opening these magnificent colorful windows – . The buttresses are still necessary, since the gothic arch pushes still outwards a little – we have also to mention that the innovation given by the pointed arch let the architects to plan wider vaults than the ones builded in romanic churches, so they were pretty heavy anyways – but they can be 'excavated' by moving them at the perimeter of the building, and connecting them to the vaults with arch structures – the flying buttresses – letting the sunlight come in more freely.
P.S. If I made grammar mistakes I'm sorry, I'm not a native english speaker

good to see Rick again. roughly at 13.30-14.30 the song in the back is a Caucasian song, much embraced by both Armenians and Turks: Sarı Gelin or Sari Gyalin. Interesting to hear the song in the documentary.
You are a national treasure! Thank you!
Greetings from Amsterdam ❤
