1992 Stumpjumper — My Favorite Bike Ever
Picked this thing up for under $100 on marketplace. The seller bought it new in ‘92, but was way too tall for it so it had super low mileage. Despite the low miles, they kept up with routine maintenance, so the thing was already is great shape.
After a solid clean and lube, new cables and housing, some fresh brake pads (kool-stop salmon FTW), and a few contact point swaps: This thing rides like no other bike I’ve ever been on. Responsive yet stable, smooth but light, fast but chill. The ultimate do-it-all bike.
In fact, it’s so good that I hate my other bikes now. I might sell half the stable just to keep money and parts around to keep this guy running smooth for many years to come. The 1992 deore groupset is unreal and I dread the day that those components need replacing.
For those interested, my modifications from the catalog-picture-perfect condition it was bought in (as pictured in the second photo):
– Conti Race King 26×2.2 tires—incredible performance on all surfaces (except heavy mud or wet snow) wet and dry, shockingly fast on pavement, such a nice ride quality
– Vintage specialized dirt drop riser stem with integrated cable hanger (had to find a shorter stem than the stock one)
– Alleyway find cruiser bars (shimmed to fit dirt drop stem) with oury grips
– Ergon Saddle
– Raceface Aeffect pedals ($15 parts bin score)
