My 1974 Schwinn Sports Tourer has qd wheels but is there a trick to release the brakes to make the wheel easier to remove? I have similar levers as the ones in the photo above.
Dia Compe levers sometimes have a riveted tab that you can push to the side to get the levers to open more but the model in the photo lacks this feature.
What kind of brake calipers do you have?

Not period correct, but I would ditch the “GT extension” levers and fit some proper ones with a bit of backward drop.
They weren’t called suicide levers for nothing – you can’t properly apply the top brakes to stop the wheel which is when you need them. They really show any bike they’re fitted to has a cloven hoof.
