Hey y’all! So about a week ago I was at a show, went down in the mosh pit and somehow managed to fracture my patella (kneecap). Fortunately it was a pretty clean break, I suffered no tendon/soft tissue damage, and I just had surgery today to piece it back together. I was wondering if any of y’all fixed riders have experienced this injury, and if so, what the recovery process was like with regards to riding your bike.
I’m thinking it may be beneficial to ease back into riding on something with gears. Or maybe just switching my gear ratio to something super spinny, or even throwing a freewheel on the other side of my hub? I’m currently running 46/17, so it’s not like I’m mashing away on a big track ratio. I’m also wondering if I’d benefit from switching to flats from SPD’s?
Obviously I’m going to consult a medical professional regarding this matter, but in the meantime I’d love to hear from anyone who’s had experience with an injury like this. I’m also just getting antsy as fuck having not been on my bike in over a week lol, I’m sure many of you can relate 😂

Dunno. But I just fractured my collarbone last week taking a header over the handlebars. I’m starting to go crazy not being able to ride.

Your knee is fat as fuck. Jesus. 😂
I had a coworker who did the same thing and he was either totally immobile for 6 months or he was milking the company disability pay
Holy swollen knee, that’s insane. Hope it heals up well!
46/17 🖤🤘
I haven’t had that injury nor a medical professional but I would just go the least stressful route so prob geared bike with flat pedals or spinny freewheel with flats just to be safe and until you feel comfortable then make changes step by step until ur back to your regular settings
That’s a good recovery gear but no lie, you should get a geared bike for the rehab. You’re going to need really low impact spinning once you get back at it. Work up to riding fixed again.
I haven’t fractured my knee cap before but I have had my foot reconstructed with plates and bolts as well as a severely dislocated ankle. I still ride fixed. Biking is a great way to help recovery as it’s very low impact. I found a lower gear much less painful and definetly add a brake. Single speed might be the way to go if you are hesitant about going fixed from the start. Just take things slow, listen to your body and take breaks off the bike where needed. Movement is healing but it can easy to over do it.
