This is my first time fixing up a bike. It’s and 80’s Monark fixed gear. I did a decent job taking photos as I went but can not figure out where this thing goes or what it’s purpose is. It’s very light, maybe aluminum. It’s also so generic I can’t seem to find any help on Google.

It’s a spacer. It takes up space on your axle so that the distance over the locknuts is right for your frame.

Adding: The old track bikes had 110mm spacing. Derailleur frames were 120mm (5cogs) or 126 (6cogs) or 130 or 135. The hub makers could use the same 1cog hub body and add spacers and use a longer axle so that you don’t have to use a special frame.Â
Yeah, looks like aluminum. Are there any pictures you can share of the rest of the bike? Did it have brakes, and if so, what style are they? What kinds of pedals?
My first guess for an aluminum ring like this would be some kind of spacer, but buying is immediately jumping to mind
It looks like a derailleur hanger bolt. Can you unscrew it in two parts?
