After the bolt that will happen if you don’t have an cable cap crimped on to prevent it. Before the pinch bolt means that the cable is weaker than it was when new and I would suggest replacing it.

If you like the ability to stop, it certainly matters. But who needs brakes to work anyway? They only slow you down.

Before you replace that cable you should wash your bike, but yeah, I would replace that and look into why and how it happened.

I am a frayed it does matter there mate!
if the cable is fraying it’s time to stop playing and replace it, rule of thumb.
also the silver ferrule should be removed so housing can go into the cable guide there, as mentioned above.. maybe a black plastic ferrule will be thin enough to fit in to the guide, but it might not, is a gear not brake housing ferrule anyway and should be right. the guide on the brake unit is meant to be a sort of ferrule I suppose, but open to correction.

It matters that it’s frayed because of you look closely, you’ve broken a strand above the fixing bolt.
I would replace the entire cable and, when I do, I would make sure I put a cap on the end of it so it can’t fray.

Yea I mean if it breaks then you have no brake. It matter because it’s no longer as strong as it should be and any moment it could break or slip out. Just go get new brake cables.

Who ever did that botched it. The cable and end cap need to be replaced. Maybe housing too. You need a “pop” end cap to seat properly, and the cable is frayed above the clamp. Use a ferule to keep the cable from unwinding below the clamp.

It’s seems you are using both wrong cable and wrong ferule these suppose to fit inside not float like they do in this picture … that’s how your frayed thud cable … the vibrations pit pressure one cable and it frayed

Not really till you need adjustment for it, than just take the cable twist them in cirkels than hold them with something that can resist heat and won’t burn you and put a blowtorch/lichter to the cable and if hot enough it should melt together

For $9 you can get a Jagwire Sport Slick Stainless Brake Cable and a pack of 10 Jagwire 1.8mm Cable End Crimps. It’s worth the $9 to be able to stop and to not stab yourself in the hand or leg with that frayed cable.

Replace it. Cables cost at most a couple bucks from your LBS. If you don’t want to do the work it should cost max $15 total for new cable, housing and labor. Better than snapping the cable and paying out the ass for a hospital visit.
