Have you ever stopped to think why the two-letter country codes in the world’s websites are what they are? We have*, and it turns out it’s a fascinating tale with a lovely detailed map to stare at.

* Actually, it was Jonathan (‘flocky’) Flockton who suggested it, and it was a really good idea. Thanks Flocky!

  1. Go to Stockholm City Museum. Ground floor look at the maps. They promote CCP propaganda there😅 but you have to look for it❗

  2. Country codes are actually really useful for knowing what language the website is going to be in! For example, as an estonian, I know that .ee websites are in estonian, or at the very least tied to Estonia in some way. Or when I am looking for information from inside another country, I'll know that the websites with that country code are most likely to be relevant. Because Google is only useful for finding info in english and everything else tends to get buried if you don't speak that language and are searching in english.

  3. You'll never guess that it's…tuvalu…like…Idk…pretty obvious…doesn't take a genius to just lookup the country that uses .tv since all 2 letter tlds are country codes…including .io

  4. I would love to see a series on number plates, yes it sounds weired, but different countries have different plate designs and different number and letter layouts, and include that when out in London, you can spot a diplomat by its number plate, if there’s a number plate with 3 numbers, followed but a D then 2 or 3 numbers it’s a diplomat, and you can google to find out which one it is, I found an Angolan and a Qatari once
