We are at 8 billion people. With continued exponential population growth we may reach a peak of 10 billion people.
I, and many others, think that by 2100 there is a darn good chance that we will only be at half to one billion people. If we are still here.
There are a couple darn good articles that were written just over four years ago on this very concept.

What has happened since they were written? Lots, buts it’s all worse than what we had four years ago.
Greenhouse Gas Concentrations in the atmosphere have accelerated even faster to new record levels.
Extreme weather events around the world have exploded in frequency, severity, and duration and are occurring in new places.
Global temperatures have further accelerated and we have hit days above 2.0C, and 2023 is likely to be above 1.5C.
We have over 100,000 people attending COP28 in the desert, and conference capture by the fossil fuel industry.

Great episode!
By which metric do "crop yields continue to decline"? I've heard some ppl saying that but it doesn't seem to be true.
Overshoot ….
I think fundamentally people know that the species will adapt and survive, because it's what we do, it's why we're still here and why we're everywhere. The problem is that there's no concept to the general public of what that will actually look like, how much suffering and trauma that is going to involve, and for how long. Half the species may die, but we in richer countries expect that to mean mostly poorer countries, whether we are willing to admit that out loud or not. If you could make people believe that half of their family will die because of this, that they will lose their homes and the laws that protect them, they may act differently, but anyone who says such a thing is considered an alarmist attention seeker.
Of course, we have an idea of what that looks like now – the pandemic was a great example of how entitled people in rich countries will behave when presented with a world changing crisis, and in spite of heroic actions by individuals and scientists ultimately limiting the overall effects, our global society failed the challenge miserably. We learned also who the important people who allow us to live blindly comfortable lives are, and our solution was to ask them to stay on the front lines and suffer for us. What will happen when the people we require to hold up global consumerism face an unreconcilable famine?
At this point the reality is we are already in the middle of the storm and it will simply have to play out. It's not that it's almost too late, it's that 40 years ago was too late.
This subject has become a bit of a hobby now, yes Paul you are correct, the only unanswered question is how fast will this unfold. I for one am sick & tired of scientist statements that STILL end with we still can turn this around, such nonsense. Im thinking they deep down refuse to admit to themselves its over. The Oceans created us & will take us away!
"So immense that it must be everyone's overriding priority forever" – yeah that's not going to happen, at least not before it's too late. You can't just wave a wand and create a new global religion overnight, it takes hundreds of years for a religion to take over, it never takes over everywhere, and it fades over time. The only hope is technology – green, nuclear, fusion, whatever – you will need to make the transition off CO2 tolerable, like getting off CFCs was. You're not going to turn everyone in the West into climate hippies, let alone everyone in the coal chugging developing world (and then there's Germany 🤦). At this point, the only way out is through.
Won't renewables save us? It's getting cheaper every year along with batteries
Let's all promise to be good to one another when civilization collapses
There is no climate crisis. There is climate change which is natural, mostly dictated by that amount of sunlight that hits our planet. There is Co2 variances through history, for untold millions of years…again all natural. The rate of Co2 increase is more rapid due to human activity, no question there. Those who have drank the climate crisis Kool aide should realize that you are being manipulated by people and organizations that have their own agenda and this agenda is not for our benefit. Do more research on climate change.
Here in the UK, for as long as I can think of, whenever some extremity of weather has occured and was in the news or media in general, there has always followed "…there is no proof this was caused by climate change…" or similar dismisive, and although technically that was always probably true to some point the fact is when the people are spoon fed "there's nothing to worry about" whenever they see a massive hurricane killing hundreds of people and causing billions of $$$ of damage, or there has been some extreme heat wave, for decades, then they just switch off to the danger we are all facing. And further, no one is talking about the other issues we will be facing in the near future, like mass migration the likes of which we have never seen, so called 'water wars' etc. Seriously, the people should be rising up in anger demanding we sort this out – we should all be livid with those who are causing this, but we aren't.
Its time humans woke up – stopped breeding !!!! – and realised the huge role of animal agriculture in wrecking this planet. See "Cowspiracy" and "Eating Our Way To Extinction".
You can find what appears to be sponsored climate change deniers attempt to anti aliasing content like Mr.Beckwith here produce, claiming it’s impossible and others saying we got a control mechanism in place or planned so not to worry. Even going as far as labelling those like ourselves who heard the warnings decades ago and unable to do anything we’re reduced to watchers. Well, I been watching and they can throw every elitist dollars towards buying time for the sake of their bottom line and satisfying their investors in polluting the planet but we can do what they can’t, put the undeniable evidence right to their faces if it would do any good. Elitist will just ignore the facts, run and hide when outed and hope they don’t get replaced by an abundance of crisis actors who’s job is not to tell but circumvent facts. It’s like it’s second nature for they and their minions to not give an F but businesses that sell to them false senses of securities will disappear when SHTF and it will be the hard way and too late for even them to avoid the inevitable. I can see examples but here’s 1. They bought a bunker with green houses and self sustaining systems galore, those who aided them may likely be rewarded with accommodating them and family with a space and the claim of surviving the worst conditions will have them thankful and grateful nearing subservient status as they receive word from the outside world without necessities and all will appear to be a huge success but one day , one of them, for example, check the most vital part for any human to live like water supply getting low. All it takes is a long spat of drought, if it’s eminent that for a dozen people there’s a few months left and the one that checks is the one holding the shotgun then you don’t need complex formulas to figure out what will come next, some have got to go and even after the herds thinned without some phenomena like 1 in a quadrillion chance not even the last one left is spared. I’m going to sound like a broken record but “ they don’t give a dam about anyone but their own soul” that’s just one scenario . Selfishness and greed will bite them back.
Paul while I largely agree with your work, before global warming can cause societal collapse economic depletion of fossil fuels that make up 95% of the cost of agricultural production will.
Educate people and they will stop breeding.
PAUL I HAVE A KEY QUESTion for my own understandinng. Pro. Hansen says that the scietists of the past misunderstood climate sensitivity because they assumed microorganisms on the sea surface would migrate to places they are most comfortable with as climate change happens. So a climate sensitivity of 3 degrees was hypothesised when the actual sensitivity is 7 degrees, I don't understand this idea of what the little microorganisms do can be interpreted to make a judgement on the sea temperatures of the past changing over time in response to increase of 3 or even more degrees
can you help me out?
I agree that the situation is bad but there are also thousands of solutions. Carbon can be withdrawn from the atmosphere using Enhanced weathering, several EW solutions have been shown to work. I summarized a paper suggesting that it's possible to capture 33 Gt carbon with algae and plants, there are many such works suggesting different pieces of solution: algae farming, soil carbon capture, soil covers, plant choice, forestry. I a aware of one work mentioning methane degradation by generation of hydroxy radicals, but there are surely more around. We need regrowth and hundred times more work on solutions. but we'll surely get there
Just collective suicide like some other sects would do the trick to save the world from ecoterrorist
There are predictions by Prophet Muhammad s. a. w. that 99 out of 100 people will perish during the apocalypse.
We ARE heading right there.
So:
Be a good human being that helps others instead of stealing, lying etc.
For I have become witness of the horrors of Hell and the glory of the heavens.
@40:00, Set aside Nationalism. This is the attitude that got us into this mess. Globalization greatly increased greenhouse gas emissions. Humanists of the 70s brought on this problem. They were so arrogant. They thought that the West could feed everyone with the green revolution and save the planet. Most still think this. These people are lifeboat sinkers. Westerners might survive this if we start stockpiling food and other resources. This is what natural animals do. But the humanists are crazy. They are not even as intelligent as squirrels.
you are full of shit the reason why we are here today is because of increased CO2 in the atmosphere that allows agriculture to grow
So, at the cop meetings, you have a smart meeting with scientists. And a dumbed down version for the so-called “elite”.?
It's ok, really. The climate catastrophe might wipe out the entire human race. But life on earth will survive. Some way or another. And then peace on the planet will be restored again. A sort of new Eden one might say. Makes me smile. 🙂🖤👍
"The evil of the Democrat's overpopulation policy " – 35:25
They have entrenched denial.
👍 👍 !
You quoted from article ony 10 percentbof population would survive at 4c. What disease and death from sickness for various reasons at less than 4c
I would argue that Earth's carrying capacity is less than one billion people now. Our population overshoot is the crux of the problem in the first place.
if people do not know how dire human or otherwise made climate change is, all these climate gasses comes with pollution so that everyone can understand is bad. maybe start there.
Its just part of a natural cycle. Every once in a while the earth is wiped clean. It doesn't worry me at all.
people will start migrating in large masses…I don't blame them at all, I'd do the same in their shoes.
