I look at 5 biggest mistakes that cruise passengers make with cruise excursions, often ruining not only their time in port but putting a huge dampener on their total cruise.

09:18 On Tour Mistakes
Excursions are one of the biggest extra costs when we go on a cruise vacation and so it never ceases to amaze me the bizarre choices and things that I see my fellow Cruisers doing when planning booking or going on them so stick around to hear about the five most remarkable
Errors that I’ve seen and what they should have been doing instead so you of course can avoid them welcome aboard I’m Gary bembridge making it easy to get cruising right every time including on cruise excursions the first mistake I see is Cruisers not researching the ports before going so they can decide
What the very very best things to see or do in them are so if you don’t you’re relying on what the cruise line is offering and you’re assuming that they include always the must and the absolute best SE places however I’ve learned that may not always be the case because of
Course Lions have to rely on whatever capacity their specific tour operator partner has available when that ship is calling into Port it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re going to take you to see the very best things they will just offer you what it makes sense to provide
So you may be missing out in a particular cruise port but also by researching the port you will know if you should even do an Excursion or whether you should self explore and more on that topic later now my go-to for researching Cruise ports is a site called what’s in port.com because they
Have coverage of even the most obscure ports it tells me where the ship is going to be docking what’s with an easy access how easy it is to explore safety issues public transport options the key sites to see and on and on and on now another critical thing that I always
Check by Port by Port close to the time is the weather so I can be prepared because of course it chops and changes so for example on my recent region 7 se’s cruise to Japan I could see that really heavy rain was forecast when we
Were going to be in Tokyo so I actually just packed an umbrella and a bit of a rain rain code into my suitcase and so unlike my fellow guests that were getting really wet or having to stay on the bus to avoid the rain I could still
Get out and see the Imperial Palace the Magi Shrine the hammer Koto Gardens and it was in relative Comfort because I was prepared however this next mistake is something I see creating more problems when it comes to excursions than anything else and that quite simply is not checking the fine print in the
Excursion details and terms this was the cause of pretty much all of the issues on excursions that I saw on recent cruises and there are actually surprisingly five things that you absolutely need to check first of all check the activity or Fitness level required all Cruise Lines classify
Excursions so for example on that recent region Japan cruise I was talking about they had three clear distinct categories that each tour was rated against with descriptions of like the amount of walking steps standing time and other kind of physical considerations however still on many excursions I went to on
That trip I saw people really struggling because they hadn’t checked the fitness and Mobility so for example we went to visit the kzu Zan to shugu Shrine in shimuzu these had really steep Stone steps that just many people could not cope with the cruise before that I was
In French Polynesia and I booked a cycling tour which included a ride up to a mountain Viewpoint however people just hadn’t read the fitness and ability detail so some ended up having to wait at the bottom of the mountain because they just couldn’t do it While most of
Us spent half of the Excursion time up on the mountain Viewpoint I went to the Ral gardo caves in Kochi it had really steep climbs it had tight spaces it had a total of 800 steps which people when they got there realized they just couldn’t do it so they had to sit
Outside while we spent an hour or so in the caves also check the activity levels for weight and height or age limits for example I did a helicopter ride on my last Alaska cruise up to the glazers in Juno where there were maximum weight restrictions and one man was actually
Turned away on the day there can also be hide restrictions for thrill rides like ziplining perhaps age restrictions for you know alcohol drinking related tours next look in the fine print for details of the distance from the port and how long you’re going to spend on the bus so
For example also on that region Japan Cruise the tour to Kyoto from Kobe where we docked had 1 and 1/2 hours on the bus there and 1 and 1/2 hours back now people seemed shocked when we set off to learn this because they had not read the
Fine print thirdly and one I slipped up on my last Caribbean cruise is to check the detail of exactly what is going to happen on the Excursion and the time allocated for each activity so on that trip I booked a beach break in St Lucia now if IID read the detail properly I
Would have realized that we were going to spend almost half of that time doing a shop Excursion at a center with chocolate making candle making t-shirts Screen Printing and other shopping stuff instead of all the time at the beach fourthly check what is and is not included so for example on that region
Japan cre I’ve been talking about in many places the Excursion covered our entry into the grounds but not to go inside the attractions or buildings within them so in that Kyoto Excursion I mentioned earlier it got me into the nio castle grounds but touring the actual castle itself I personally had to then
Pay for in addition to the Excursion entry fees now if the tour is over lunchtime also check if a meal is or is not included so again on that coyota tour it was included in a local Resort but on others I went on over meal times it was not included so important that
You check what is and isn’t included also check in the fine print for any dress code so for example when I was in Cairo at the start of my Nile river cruise this year we had to have our shoulders and knees covered on the day that we were visiting a mosque active
Excursions like say going on an ATV tour may require you know you to have closed shoes so always check fine print for dress code now there is another thing that I see Cruisers repeatedly getting wrong and it affects their bank balance badly your most expensive Excursion options will usually be booking the
Cruise line ones because they mark them up to make a profit on the tours their local providers run in the cruise Line’s name so they’re were going to make a mark up a profit so this is why I do these quick checks before finally booking a cruise line Excursion so first
Of all I check if I can book the activity direct and if so for Less which is pretty much always is now for example I absolutely love doing the Y pass and Yukon train in Skagway Alaska I love it and I always book that direct for way
Less money than if I was doing it as a cruise Excursion I go in by the way months and months before because it does does sell out so getting in early is key if you’re booking direct with the the attraction or the provider another is I
Never book Hop On Hop Off buses through the cruise line for example this summer I was on a Norwegian Viva cruise that stopped in Barcelona now the cruise line was selling the Hop On Hop off bus for over €70 it’s about $75 but I could buy a Hop On Hop off day
Pass for just €35 at the booth in the terminal the other thing I always do is compare with independent Alternatives like shore.com shore excursions group.com and now the second by the way makes a lot of their guarantee that they promised to get me back to the ship on time and if they
Don’t they will cover the cost of getting me to rejoin the ship at the next Port but whatever route you go this next mistake I unfortunately have seen too many times mess up people’s trips most Cruisers seem to wait until just before the cruise or once they’re on
Board to book excursions hence the long lines at the short excursions desk on embarcation day this is a terrible idea for a couple of reasons first of all most cruise lines have a pretty good cancellation policy usually the ability to cancel 48 hours before an Excursion
With no penalty so I always go in early and I book excursions as soon as they are available in my cruise planner online to make sure I get the ones I want from the cruise line knowing I can tweak once I’m on the trip or even
Cancel them I’ve been on so many cruises where people have gone on what is a trip of a lifetime and missed out on the key excursions they wanted to do one that really really sticks on my mind was on a South American trip on hland America last year with the Highlight was going
To see penguins in the Faulkland which for most people was going to be the only Cruise that’ll ever go on in their lifetime to see penguins in their natural environment but I met way too many people that had waited until they got on board to try and book that
Excursion but it was sold out I had booked months and months ahead and I got to go on the Excursion and I got to see the Penguins so I put in my diary the day excursions are going to be open and then I go in and I lock them in for all
My Cruisers however once Cruisers have their excursions booked there are a couple of mistakes I keep seeing people do once they actually go on them on every trip I always see people traveling with friends or family really annoyed that they’re put on different buses or groups now it’s so easy because all you
Literally need to do is check in at the same time with all the group together to be on the same bus the next one drives me crazy which is passengers not paying attention to nor respecting Meetup times especially if there’s free time to go
Off and do stuff on a tour the tours end up going at the pace of the slowest person now for example on an Excursion in Pisa Italy this summer on each side we were given free time but every time a family always came back late producing
The the time we had to explore other attractions the guide kept saying they needed to watch it because he would have to leave them behind if they were late at the last stop because he had to get us back to the ship at a set time because it was quite some distance away
On the last stop 25 minutes after the me time they were not back and so we left without them now they did eventually get back to the ship before the ship departed by having to catch a taxi at their own great expense now there is another huge mistake I see
Around deciding whether to self-explore use independent tours or stick with the cruise line and there are four times that I will always go with the cruise line over any option now I talk about that and what they are in this video starting with the one thing that most
People completely Overlook see you over there

My husband is a very slim healthy 72 year old yet could not go on what was described as an Adventure Truck where as I am greatly overweight with knee problems and use walking poles on holiday I went on this trip without him, whete do you draw the line – age means nothing in my opinion.
As a solo, female cruiser I always take the cruise line excursions. I’m not as adventurous as many are to book outside the cruise line. I’m aware of companies like Viator and Shipmate Shore Excursions, and I learned that they use the same companies as the cruise line, so maybe one day I’ll try one of them.
My daughter and I took a 5-hour tour of Bermuda through Norwegian. Our driver was fantastic! He had an itinerary, but we were the 5th of 5 buses. He reversed the order of the attractions we visited so we wouldn't run into crowds at every attraction. He added in little extra areas, like his own neighborhood so he could explain specific instances of life on Bermuda. Lastly, because we were all prompt in getting back to the bus on time (I say bus, it was more the size of an airport shuttle), we got an unscheduled stop at a small beach area to step in the water for a few minutes. Easily the best tour I've ever taken. We wouldn't have had him if we'd booked on our own, because his company contract with Norwegian only on cruise visit days. No private tours. It worked out beautifully for us.
I understand what you say about checking the physical level one needs to have for each excursion, but I use a walker and need to sit periodically, plus I cannot walk too far. But often there is no excursion that I want in my “easy” level, so I do struggle to go on the “moderate” excursion level. There is very little choice in the Easy level.
I do have one warning about Shore Excursions Group. We booked a tour out of Sydney Nova Scotia with them. The tour operator never showed up and didn't answer their local phone. I had a fight with Shore Excursions Group for over a month for a refund only to find out the operator had not been running the tour for at least a month and neither the local company nor Shore Excursions Group bothered to tell us so we could make other plans. Furthermore SEG fought the refund for a month. Very Disappointing.
AWESOME advice, do SCROLL too the bottom of the excursion page BEFORE you book.
Consider the activities based on your party and interests. I had my kids on a cruise and had to select things they would like, beach, swimming, etc. However, tours highlighting history, museums, and the like interest me and my oldest, but not the younger ones.
EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM! Great advice!
I tried to watch, but after the third youtube ad intrusion within 6 minutes of starting, I gave up.
My cruise is in June 2024. I booked all of my excursions already. The June cruise is a quick 7 day Alaska cruise, where some of the time in some of the ports is rather limited. Because of that, I booked excursions with the cruise line. I didn't want to take a chance of missing the ship. I haven't started booking the excursions on my three week October cruise.
I checked the White Pass direct. It was $5 cheaper than the Princess cruise – which took me direct from the ship to the train station! Plus Princess had booked most of the train well ahead.
I guess I should've looked at the details for "Nassau Highlights". 5 stops – and each one included shopping! A couple of them did have nearby attractions, though. We zoomed past the National Gallery at max speed! As I recall, there really weren't many details listed anyhow! Very disappointing.
I'm very unfit. I'd not be able to manage any of the walking and steps. Shame. I'll have to make do with looking at youtube travel blogs and google earth to see the sights.
Another great info packed blog…

I have a question Gary. I’ll be in London for 3 days at the end of February. Do you recommend the hop on hop off bus there? I see mixed reviews for this because of wait times, etc. Thank you!
I watch a LOT of your video's and this was one of the very best and most helpful I've seen so far. Side Note: In Puerto Rico we booked a walking tour that was billed as sternuous. We were a little bit in denial of our age and ended up having a hard time keeping up. Was both humbling for us and a little anoying to some of the others who were younger. Moral, be realistic about what you can do. LOL
On the "must see" issue: everyone has their own individual "must see" items in each port. You might want to see a great cathedral, someone else on the tour wants to see a religious ossuary, and I'm more a third wants to examine the cobblestones for their geological features. No one tour can satisfy all three interests.
There must be a lot of people who need to go to the gym, not on a cruise because I'm a spherical heifer and I've never had a problem keeping up with a tour group so if someone has issues with that they should stay away from the buffet.
Make sure a certain event is open. On an excursion we missed The Grand Bazaar!!! Closed on Sunday. But the excursion made sure to take us to a vendor who sold rugs for at least an hour. Coming all the way from the US to miss this event!!!
Shame on the cruise ships for not providing enough shore excursions when the destination is why most people book their cruise
We rarely, if ever, go on cruise line excursions, but like you I review several web sites months in advance as to what are the must see places in ports and close by cities.
I find Celebrity doesn’t provide enough detail regarding their excursions.
thanks Gary, love your videos, I just went on a China tour with "trip a deal" and it was horrendous, we were dropped at least 1klm from each activity and had to walk, also, even though our 'tours' were finished for the day, they dropped us at an ultrs expensive shopping centre, for 1.5 hrs, so that we could only get into our accommodation by 5.30/6pm … this is a very heavily discounted tour company, how they even thought we'd buy Chloe, Valentino, Chanel to Tiffany and Co. Fendi, Givenchy and Dior Homme…..???? this was not a cruise, but WARNING do not book this … from the queues to see terracotta warriors (I gave up it was just so horrendiously packed, even on a week day) food on Air China was absolutely dreadful …. and I love asian cuisine. Maybe you should do some really good 'tours' this was the worst.
I'm never going back to china … other activities were of the money making kind without telling us, eg., the tea plantation, whereby they sat us down and tried to make us (not me) drink this drEADFUL 'tea' my travel companion was actually sic for 2 days. Then the rest of the gullible bought Bags and Bags of this abomiable brew… pus the visit to a chinese medicine 'university' OMG which I unfortunately succumed to,, more fool me, NEVER AGAIN
Can anyone tell me if you book your own excursion, what time are you likely to be allowed off the ship after the other excursions have disembarked?
It sounds like these excursions are scams.
Once again wonderful information. I feel it’s always the Great Debate wether to choose what the cruise lines are offering or roll the dice and go with an independent.
We are in the middle of this decision as we cruise to the Mediterranean this year and have so many choices to choose from. I really appreciated your detailed points on why or why not to go with the cruise or independent company. We really enjoy your videos and your information which helps us make better choices on our trips. 😊
Not respecting meet up time also drives me nuts and I pick out who that will be when I board the bus😀
Although some of your viewers may have already known about it, as a soon to be first time cruiser, looking at Shore Excursions has blown my mind. Thanks for the tip!
Cruisers often have no idea how to take responsibility for planning and touring. They do not read. Backpack and business travelers really scoff at this part. And yes, expedition cruises will require that you ALWAYS take the cruise line excursions due to so many rules, laws and limitations (there really is no other option). The rest of the time, it really isn't necessary even if it's free (oh the nasty, lazy people you will have to sit next to or around).
I appreciate when they say how hard the excursions are. Many are strenuous. I can’t do those anymore.
I’ve purchased a rain poncho. And an umbrella to travel with always.
Wheelchair restrictions?
At 7:30, a strong word of caution when using a third-party excursion group: Make sure you distinguish between excursions that are intended as pre-cruise/post-cruise activities vs. shore excursions for a port of call. When looking at your agencies, they are offering a plethora of options for someone who is either originating or terminating at that port, but for us, it's a port of call, and we need to be picked up FROM THE SHIP and later returned TO THE SHIP by a specified time. Choosing one of their city tour options could end up being a very costly mistake for us.
At 10:30, I totally agree with you about respecting meet-up times, especially if the tour/excursion has multiple stops. Each delay waiting for tardy passengers only eats away from the time allocated to upcoming stops, and it's extremely disrespectful to all those other passengers who somehow managed to get to the bus on time. I confess that I smiled a little inside when you said this particular family had to bear the additional expense to get back to the ship, though I suppose they were only annoyed and didn't have the decency to be embarrassed or shamed.
This video is perfect. Our last cruise was a simple Pacific Coastal cruise. It seemed like my husband and I were the only ones that packed for fifties and rain. We saw a lot of people who were dressed for 70-80s and sun. It can get cold, sometimes very cold in even California.
Not sure if you sell merch or affiliates… but you know what I would love to buy? a paper atlas book with maps of all common ports in the Caribbean… expansive enough to include many popular excursion areas.
I can think of several other helpful pages to include too, but paper maps in a regular-sized book would be great!
imagine being so fat you get turned away from a helicopter ride lmao
Having worked for a few years as a coach driver, the point about peoples timekeeping is spot on. I have had dozens of experiences where people have been late back to the Bus. On every trip there is ALWAYS the one couple or family that are late every single time. I have had to leave people behind on a ferry before because we were the lead vehicle and if we didnt move the whole ferry was going to be waiting behind us. Then in Barcelona on a school tour, the group leader went awol at Camp Nou and ended up having to get a taxi to our next visit. As you say it is infuriating. My sister recently had a cruise in Asia and she was telling me that when a certain couple boarded the excursion bus, the other passengers bood them at the start of the day because they were notorious for holding up the tours (it wasn't my sister by the way, she is the most on time person i have ever met)
One issue with doing independent operator excursions is if the ship for some reason cancels a port at the last minute . Can you always get your money back?
This happened to us last October on a Canada /Nee England cruise when da port stop was cancelled due to a bad storm . Fortunately our excursion was via the cruise line so we got a refund . Not sure what would have happen with an independent operator .
I’m amazed how little people read all the info available (and using basic things like map to check distance) I have some mobility issues so am very wary of any excursion labels above low activity level. One my current cruise I only booked one cruise excursion transfer to the beach as I want the security of transport later in the trip when I know I will have less energy to do that myself. I have use the cruise excursions to give me ideas, I found there are cable cars in one port from the cruise excursion list so I’m planning to doing that but not with the cruise line and the cable car are only one part of a much more energetic trip I know I won’t be able to do.
Sometimes I do wait until getting on the ship to book my excursion because I want to use onboard credit… And they won't let me spend on board credit if I book befor embarking.
