This might be a stupid question.
I know that the spec for Tiagra 4700 rim brakes is that the max tyre width they support is 28mm. I have 25mm tyres on 13C wheels. I want to upgrade to 17C wheels and wider tyres. I know that 28mm tyres on 17C wheels will be miles better from this, but I kinda want to go wider. It seems as if there is wnough space here to fit much wider tyers than just 28mm.
Has anyone tried going above the max spec? Is there something I’m not seeing here?

yeah I have 28mm tires on 2009 era tektro breaks. the bike came with 23mm tires so I think the max is probably that or 25mm. I cant take off the wheel without deflating the tire because its too “fat” to pass the calipers. but outside of that there’s no issue.
Be careful, a wider rim will also make the tires wider and slightly higher. If you upgrade to 17 mm rims and 28 mm tires, that will be a huge increase in tire width and volume already.
32 mm is a big step up over 28 mm, but if you are lucky 30 mm will fit.
It isn’t just the brakes you need to check. Mine will take a fatter tyre than I am running, however it is extremely close to the seat tube so I couldn’t go bigger for that reason, rather than the brakes.
