The 970 is an actually nice bike. Great frame materials.
The HardRock is a perfectly capable bike, but it’s comparatively a tank next to the 970.
I would definitely go for the trek if you can afford it. The v brakes and ability to swap stems and bars easily are what do it for me
Depends if you’re looking for a project beater or a nice built up bike. I’d say they’re both solid for the price if they’re both in good condition. The Trek is maybe a bit better of a deal; they put some nice parts on there. This was someone’s passion project.
Hardrock
If you plan to upgrade to a modern groupset any you could probably get at least $100 for the Trek groupset, which brings the cost down even more. Or if you’re planning to work with what you have, you’ll probably spend at least $100 upgrading the Hardrock to the Trek’s specs, making them a similar cost at the end of the day.
Either way, I love the Hardrock colour scheme but the Trek just comes out on top.

Currently build up a hardrock and a trek (930).
The trek feels like a bike from 2024, the hardrock feels like a bike from 1984. Both fun, tho
Trek 970 has +-$150 in upgrades installed and is a lighter frame. Would be a good ride immediately with plenty of room to improve and expand over time. Plus the extra rear dropout attachment point makes installing rear fenders and a rack together much more doable if you felt like touring at some point… It could take you very far!
DX is a really nice spec. That right there is a stumpjumper level bike. Singletrack all day.
