Inch sizes are needlessly confusing with multiple “standards”
Always use the etrto size, it measures the diameter of the bead seat in mm which is the measurement that tells if the tyre will fit the rim.
Otherwise you end with multiple sizes for 26″, one of which is bigger than 27.5″. 28″ and 29″ are exactly the same and both of them are smaller than 27″. It’s a mess. Not all websites actually list the etrto size which is also frustrating, but there are other websites which will.

Lesson here is that fractions and decimals rarely mix when looking at tire sizes.
Definitely best to look at the ISO (aka ETRTO) dimension which will tell you the diamater. 590 tires are somewhat obsolete and are intended for your vinatage 3 speeds and some French bikes. To confuse things further, a vintage Schwinn’s 26 x 1 3/8” tires are ISO 584.

There are (currently, at least) 4 different wheel diameters named 26″, varying from 559mm to 597mm (i.e. 38mm, or 1.5″ difference in diameter).
Use ETRTO measures.

Just like always, imperial measurements are flawed, but really like many have said there’s several 26” sizes. A good rule of thumb is if you have a tire currently on there that’s has a decimal number, such as 26×1.95, stick with another tire that uses decimal. If it has a fraction, such as 26×1 3/8, use only that fraction. Above all else check the iso #. A lot of manufacturers thought they could change the world to their tire size and gave up, like schwinn.

A little rule of thumb that I learned, a tire with a fractional size (26X1 3/4 inch, 24X 1 3/8inch etc…) will illicit a completely different size than the decimal offerings (26X1.75 does not equal 26X1 3/4).
Always look to the etrto size on wheels when shopping for tires 😊
