I found a 94 marin team issue frame in pretty good shape. It had been resprayed already so I don’t have a piece with original color but I found some great close up photos of how it looked like. Apparently it was a type of zinc plated paint of “champagne” color?

I’m pondering trying to respray with this original paint. Does zinc plated paint of this type still exist? Would you recommend it (I read they were prone to rust)? And how would you go about finding the right match?

If too difficult I might powder coat with a completely difficult color but thought I would at least try first.

Any insight greatly received

  1. Zinc plating is not a paint. It’s a metal plating process. This doesn’t look like zinc plating anyway. Your best bet is sand out the rust with fine sandpaper and then cover with clearcoat. You should address the rust ASAP since this is a super-thin-walled tubeset where rust will eat through the frame faster than most other frames.
You should probably get one of those $10 endoscope cameras off ebay to inspect inside the tubing.
