His ticket to par his fellow American Hillary boore a two-time Olympian in the steeple chase is making his half marathon debut today glattus chep kerui the fastest woman in the field with a 10546 to her name her Kenyan countrywoman Cynthia limmo she’s a mother of two and has been a top road

Racer for a decade Caroline groov doll of Norway she’s the most successful European cross country runner in history so yeah she should farewell on the hills of New York here today other contenders from Europe include Cali ther of Great Britain Fabian schlump of Switzerland can we buy her a vowel please and Diane

Vaness of the Netherlands you’ll recall she was fourth here just last year and on the American side Dez Lindon the 2018 Boston Marathon champ who is still running well at age 40 but that’s the new 30 friends and Jenny Simpson she won the Fifth Avenue Mile in incredible

Eight times she has now moved up to longer distances she’ll have to run 13.1 miles here today as we present to you a very deep and diverse field in terms of Ages nationalities and running backgrounds and here to call all the action with me today are our Olympian

Carrie tulson and beex gentry she of the 232 marathon and pelaton instructor extraordinarily ladies let’s have some fun today are we ready it’s going to be great a it’s going to be so much fun in fact the men’s wheelchair race is already underway and beex who should we

Be keeping an eye out for in this race this morning well today we have the amazing Daniel romanu he is a two-time champ here on the podium from last year’s TCS at New York City marathon uh won Buster marathon in 2022 absolutely awesome Contender we have also Evan

Carell he finished top four in the last two NYC half marathons and has competed and got some serious medal very recently I’m very excited for these two today and the rest of the pro field in the men’s wheelchair division looks like so any other names stand out to you ladies well

Yeah John Boy Smith I think we really need to watch him as well I would 100% agree with that let’s go UK we might be hearing a lot of that throughout the morning how about the women’s wheelchair side Carrie well when you have the defending champion and

Someone that has run so well over the streets of New York City here Susanna scaroni I mean let’s bring it she loves being here she’s excited to be back but she just got beat by Eden rainbow Cooper at the Tokyo Marathon just a couple weeks ago so Eden is really excited to

Be here too she was fourth here at the marathon this past fall so lots of talents in the women’s wheelchair race but look at that big name that’s third down there Tatiana mcfaden she is working her way back into great form in time for the Paralympics this summer I

Have a feeling we’ll be calling her name in some way shape or form before this race is over and there’s a live look at the women’s race on the left and the men’s race on the right let’s talk about conditions here ladies is it the same for runners as compared to the wheelers

Or are these more ideal conditions less ideal for the wheelers right now I think that they are excited that it’s not real windy yet it looks like the wind’s going to pick up later today but right now they are getting through the hills the early part of the course and you know

Everyone loves this race course they’re excited to be here they do they’ve got a few Hills coming their way and it’s dry the sun is not the sun’s up but it’s not out and hot so it is looking to be pretty perfect when I was talking with Susanna scaroni she said she never

Passes up an opportunity to come here not only do does she get this great atmosphere of the city but she always knows that New York Road Runners is going to bring in such a great field and it really is preparing all of the athletes today not just our wheelers but

Our Runners as well that are getting ready for their summer there’s a lot of great races this spring leading into a huge Summer with the olymp and Par Olympic Games and talking about these ideal conditions Ur van djk set the course record back in 2017 with a 4728

Tatiana mcfaden in 2016 with a 5225 I’m Ryan Field joined in the booth by krie tulson and Beck’s Gentry big day in store at the United Airlines NYC half well over 25,000 Runners taking part in today’s half marathon and don’t forget we also have some 1500 kids running

Through Time Square as part of the kids event highlighting the professional field is Clayton Young a newly minted Olympian by virtue of his second place finish at the US Olympic Marathon trials last month and in the Pro women’s race there is a pair of formidable Kenyon women carrying yes Cynthia limo is

Someone we have to talk about she’s coming off of a big win in Honolulu in December but also right there on her left glattus Ki I mean this woman is so fast she is the fastest woman in the field with a 10546 all right then we have Carolyn

Groov with the European women absolutely incredible three myyc half marathon appearances all three she finished third place so we are hoping to see if she can change that up today and then from my home country we have the wonderful cie ther the second fastest British woman ever over the Marathon distance with an

Unreal 2221 she’s going to be representing Great Britain this year in the Paris Olympics absolute wonderful and in the wheelchair races that was the MasterCard women’s preview and we take a live look out on the course right now the women’s wheelers on the left the men on the right yeah

Daniel Romanek you know when I was talking to Susanna scaron she said one of the things that she was interested in to see how Daniel came out and ran his race and Amanda mcgory too A lot of people know that name Amanda’s on the broadcast for the New York City marathon

She said that she thought Daniel needed to take it out hard which he’s doing today absolutely and here’s the professional women’s field what’s going through their mind right now oh they are Towing the line they’re probably feeling fantastic with this weather I’m sure there’s a lot

Of nerves though this could mean a lot to a lot of them and they’re off and a bre of fresh air I think anyone who knows running knows that when you start your warm up you feel like okay but then when that gun goes off it’s like okay this is what

All the hard work all the mental training is you know goes into and it’s just such a fun noise that gun and we have 25 women representing nine countries in this field here today and if you want to keep an eye out on all the action make sure you download the

United Airlines NYC half mobile app presented by Tata consultancy service it’s available on the IOS and Android the app features live video streams of the pro races plus you can follow the progress of your favorite Runners using the on map Runner tracking tool that’s the United Airlines NYC half app powered

By Tata consultancy Services let’s check in with another member of our broadcast team this morning Britney Bell who’s standing by in Time Square where they’re going to have the kids race today good morning Britney hey Ryan I heard you guys talking about the weather too it already

Feels so much better compared to the race last year because temperatures are about 20° warmer also counted about one or two raindrops but that’s not going to be an issue for the race so we’re here in Time Square very special because Time Square is closed to traffic two days out

Of the year the first New Year’s Eve and today for the half marathon also special for the kit for all of the kids participating in the kids run that starts around 7:35 1,500 kids will partic partipate and new this year it’s open to kids ages 2 to 8 now the young

Ones they’re going to participate in some of the shorter dashes but just a really fun morning all around the weather is cooperating with temperatures in the 50s throughout most of the race Ryan let’s hope it stays that way Britney we’ll be keeping everybody updated on what’s Happening Here on the

Streets of New York with the Pro men’s and women’s field as well as the wheelchair divisions all of that still to come but right now we’re going to send it back to our friends in the studio at Eyewitness News take it away and welcome back to the streaming

Portion of the program we had to uh interrupt to do some broadcasting with ABC here in New York if uh those of you listening might have been a tad confused as to what was going on uh but now we are back with you here here on the

Streaming side of things and Carrie what are we looking at right here well right now we’re seeing cie ther in the lead I just saw her husband in the lobby right before we left today and he is so excited about her she’s coming off of running a really nice Road 10K where she

Was eighth overall I believe in 31 low which is very fast on the track as well but Callie’s made her Olympic team for for Great Britain and as beex was saying she’s the second fastest marathoner for Britain guess what the number one is Paula Radcliff and she has won so many

Times here on the streets of New York so that’s a pretty cool stat for her absolutely she’s looking strong out of the gate right here she’s got a smile on her face um I’m sure that she is running within the pack of incredibly inspirational athletes to her so great day great

Start we’re just checking out who she’s with right there yeah glattus chep cury right there grooved all in that mix uh vaness you know in the middle there with the braids in the middle she was fourth here last year and vaness she too is going to Paris I mean a lot of these

Athletes are going to Paris and they said this was critical for them to come here and run on a course like this in such a great race at the UA NYY half yeah the courses are somewhat similar elevations pretty similar between here and the course that they’re going to be

Seeing in Paris this summer um I know Caroline grar is going to be well should be pretty strong here because of her cross country experience her recent wins in the cross country and Fabian schlump she was also someone that we really really wanted to talk about this woman is going to Paris

As well she’s done so well over cross country and also now moving into this distance where she’s run some pretty fast times she’s got that PB of 10827 the nice thing that we want to tell you all about their PB is some athletes have run 65 66 seconds 66 minutes in this

Race but this is a kind of an equalizer you know even though we like to talk about times when you are on a course like this you throw the time out the door and you just race absolutely Diane vaness as I said she is a returner

As well she is four she was fourth here last year 11043 so there again look at that time she might not quite have that PB but she knows how to race here and Jackie Gan kind of a new name here in America she ran her very first marathon

And qualified for the Olympic trials she was 25th there but is running very well had a personal best in Houston which was in January of 1 10:01 and she is the youngest woman in the field just 24 years old and this will not make make

Any of us feel good she was born in 1999 that’s a good year well one woman right there number 34 we’re going to get into her a lot but Edna kipot oh my goodness this woman she’s 41 no she’s 44 44 she’s the oldest woman in the field we went from the

Youngest woman to the oldest woman in the field here we go I mean look at this stat she won this race in 2011 she also won the New York City marathon in 2010 you know it has just been so much fun to watch her she is like 85% % in the top

10 she’s been in the top 10 at the World Marathon Majors 85% of her career I mean that is unreal so you always have to talk about her and she is always a threat always and we said we said 40 is the new 30 so she’s really 34 not 44

Yeah talking of which Dez Lindon right there yes coming through really running strong this season looking strong uh I know she really likes running in New York she has a great feeling from the crowds for her as well she seems to thrive on these more hilly courses so

Let’s see what she can do today yeah they’re taking it out slow right now 548 through that first mile so you know it is hilly they’re just getting into it we talked about that when this early start of this race for one you have to kind of

Be careful on those early Hills cuz they’re going to see them again in Central Park how about these conditions ladies ideal I think perfect they are that wind is I mean 7 mes per hour wind come on we’ll take that yeah it’s great I mean 50° you know the sun is warm

Right now but it’s not quite fully up so they’re going to be they’re going be great but look at this woman right here we love seeing Jenna Simpson on the streets again here she’s won so many times over the Fifth Avenue mile but here we are in one of our first few

Halves absolutely Jenny Simpson she’s in the process of Reinventing herself if you will as a half marathoner and marathoner Sam Ryan caught up with her earlier this week here with Jenny Simpson one of the greatest American middle distance runners in American history 1,500 the mile The Fifth Avenue mile

Eight times you’ve won that but now that you’re transitioning to longer distances do you consider yourself a Miler still oh absolutely in fact even as I’m doing these longer things I think more and more oh I’m a Miler but I do enjoy the longer stuff it’s been really fun the training has

Been different it’s a new crowd it’s a new um crop of competitors um and and it’s something new for me to learn the US olyp big Marathon trials I know uh that was disappointing for you’re not what you had expected what did you learn from that you know us athletes we put so

Much into these moments and you you put so much training and you sacrifice a lot you know I miss family holidays I miss events that I would I would love to be a part of because I’m really focused on Olympic trials or you know a really big

Race um but I think one of the things that I’ve learned after the trials was so disappointing there’s always something important just around the bend and for me that’s the New York City half so I’m really happy to be here happy to have something else to focus on and say

While the disappointment is heavy and it’s very real um I feel lighter because I’ve had this New York City half to look forward to there’s a live look at Jenny Simpson you know Jenny Simpson did just touch on that I think that the trials were really

Tough on her Ryan she she did not finish that race she was really putting everything into running her very first marathon there and to try to make the team I mean listen this woman has won Olympic medals she’s won the World Championships she is a winner and she

Wants to win races so for her to tow the line you know that she’s got a lot riding on it all right Pedro and Tony thanks we’re looking right now at the professional women’s field as they make their way here to Central Park and the Finish Line

The men’s race about to get underway in a few moments and that takes place in Brooklyn at the start line and that is where we find Sam Ryan Hi Sam good morning morning running this race Dez Lindon a two-time Olympian now 40 last time we saw her the US Marathon Olympic trials

Now she didn’t make the team but she is running strong as she prepares for Boston that we know is a race she won in 2018 also keep an eye out for Jenny Simpson one of the most decorated American middle distance Runners she took a bronze medal in the Olympics in

The 1500 meters also a World Champ and won the New Balance Fifth Avenue mile here in New York City record eight times wow so now we look for her at this distance it’s going to be so much fun watching Jenny and Dez guys thank you Sam a live look at the

Leaders of the pack if you will in the professional women’s field as we await the start of the men’s race carrying backs this is going to be very exciting we have a very wide and varried field field for the men’s race today there they are stepping up to the line oh the

Nerves is that a matter of breathing deep breaths yoga breaths what are you doing here to calm those nerves as you guys talked about you do a little bit of everything Shake It Out Clayton y we’ve been talking about him a lot already today and I have a

Feeling we will continue to do so I just love Clayton Young he is such a character and he’s so fun for the sport he just he texted me and said I’ve been eating breakfast for you know the last month basically because he made the team

Like he’s done he made the team he was second at the Olympic trials and he’s ready to go he really is ready to go he only took a couple of days off after the Olympic trials straight back into training with cona wow what a team yeah

And I love that Clayton brought his wife Ashley so Ashley big shout out they were this they were sightseeing all over New York so any all you New Yorkers they were seeing your city and they loved it hopefully he still has some energy for the race today sa some he saved some

He’s looking forward to it he said he’s really looking forward to the course again um getting his legs ready for the Paris course as we’ve already discussed here we have 19 competitors representing 11 countries and then behind them don’t forget five waves of more than 25,000 Runners all taking to the course here

13.1 miles with the finish line here in Central Park and they’re off how important is pacing right out of the gate here you don’t want to come out too hot yeah and you know we see the the man in the middle there Kenan pel like oh

We’re going to talk a lot about him but him leading the charge right there lots of eyes on him and how he’s going to run and we’ll be watching all of this unfold on the NYC abc7ny streaming service as well as the NYC half app you can watch all of the

Action we’ll be taking you through till the end of the race in the meantime let’s send it back to Pedro and Tony and Eyewitness News Kena belli like I was saying in the orange there this man is probably the greatest of all time over middle distance and distance running I mean we

Talk a lot about Ilia kogi and the late Kelvin kiptum uh you know but this man right here is someone that I think that we all have to talk about three-time Olympic gold medalist I mean you just go through the list and he’s also not only

Great on the track but he’s great on the roads he’s the third fastest marathoner ever and he’s coming off of a 204 so you know the guy on the left in the orange that’s definitely the one to watch lots of different guys in this field right

Now our fastest man you want to take over beex oh fastest man on the field Kena B he is absolutely one of the most decorated men on the field four time in Olympic medalist 16 time world champion personal best of 60 minutes and 22 seconds we also have up here able K

Chumber uh he’s the fastest man on the course 58 second PB here he uh has three sub 1hour half marathons which is unreal I’m really looking forward to seeing how he takes on this course we have zohare TB 28 coming from Colorado Springs so he is used to these lovely undulating Hills

To say recently won the Houston Marathon earlier this year and came third here last year at the NYC half all right up next we have yain hel salasi absolutely incredible Runner fifth over the shorter distance the 3,000 M steeple chase in the Tokyo 2021 Olympics um we have a couple of steeple

Steeple guys out here today I love it okay we have serak Brum oh my goodness coming from Norway here 2022 European championships silver medalist over the 10,000 M also a 60 Minute personal best from Copenhagen and the the incredible Hillary ball we love Hillary ball two-time US Olympic American record

Holder at the 10 miles and then there he is our star right now Clayton Young fresh off the US Olympic Marathon trials he’s on his way to Paris this is his NYC half debut everyone so we are checking out the first time of his feet on this

Course and B’s half marathon debut as well several Runners debuting on this course today uh are they at a disadvantage running this race for the first time as compared to people who have run this course I personally don’t think so I think there’s a lot of excitement doing a course for the first

Time um obviously as long as your pacing skills are solid which I’m going to Hazard to guess these guys are pretty good at pacing right now well I do like what Clayton Young said was that he comes here and just races like he isn’t so worried about necessarily what is

Going going on he’s just looking at his people around him now other people might be looking at trying to attack Hills things like that Clayton said he’s just going to go and race he is and there he is out there you know it was really fun for the American distance running fans

To see Clayton make the Olympic Marathon team last month he was so delighted effusive if you will celebrating over the last mile of the race and then at the Finish Line he’s living the dream Sam Ryan caught up with him on Thursday here with Clayton Young and

Clayton the last time time we saw you racing it was the exciting finish with Conor mans at the Olympic trial Marathon trial um has it sunk in that you’re going to the Olympics and what has like the six last six weeks been like for you

Yeah I I don’t think it’s sunk in yet I don’t think it’ll really sink in until the gun goes off in Paris but uh the last six weeks have been a blur it’s been uh such a joy to be able to celebrate this race with all those loved

Ones back at home and now I get to come out here and and to celebrate it once again with all the people of New York and that’s been pretty special okay just six weeks so what has the recovery been like for you and what has the training

For this been like yeah it definitely took some downtime and and took a couple weeks of just easy mileage and then uh yeah I got my offer from New York and I was like that’s got to be a once in a-lifetime opportunity I knew that uh

New York was going to be a hilly course and I knew that it would be an international field and those are two things that I really need to practice to get ready for Paris and so that’s what I’ll be focusing on um but yeah we’ve slowly been ramping up training and I’m

Early in my builds but uh I’m excited to see uh what happens already earning a spot on the Olympic team does that take any less pressure off of you heading into this absolutely uh it it does feel nice you know I was one of the first uh

American athletes to be named to the team and so I have all of my other friends that are you know still preparing for the I guess the track Olympic trials in June and right now I get to just enjoy it and to to prepare

And soak it all in um it does take the pressure off too because that means I don’t have to go back to the track I don’t have to go run you know 10,000 meters on the track and and try to take another shot at the

The the Olympic trials um so it’s a big side relief it’s been a dream come true for many years to come and we see Clayton Middle Of The Pack here amongst the proen looking good they’re looking strong the men over the first mile came in at a

445 per mile that would put them at around a 62 minute half marathon but we have to take into consideration the elevation chain the Topography of this course can throw anyone off their pace right now so whether they’re keeping it back it’s sort of in that downhill right

Now before they head into those Hills so we’ll see what’s going on here we have the front leading the way there my goodness me we’ve got Tashi ETO from Japan looking really strong yeah and that’s always a fun program Sam Gro old who is the elite coordinator for New York Road Runners

They bring in some of the Japanese athletes that they have a partnership with and so there’s three Japanese athletes in the international field keep your eye on them here’s the women’s field though chap karui up front right where we would assume she would be Cali

Ther I mean she is the one and you know her a little bit more than I do beex but she likes to push she likes to be up front she likes to kind of sniff the lead she does she likes to just go in there I think go in there bite it off

And work hard that she has an incredibly hard work as every single athlete who is running today does but I can see that grit that determination in her face and then look at our wonderful Edna there she is that’s where she is all the time she’s not necessarily the one to push

The pace but she is always she is such a master at Tech tactics yes well I was going to ask I mean she’s 44 she’s the oldest woman in the field how does she continue to run at this level at her age is it tactics is there more to it well I

Asked her agent I got I gave him a call the other day and I’m like listen tell me what it is cuz I want to know right and he said she’s not doing anything really that different but he does say and he was honest he said I think the

Shoes so we we can get into this a little bit but there’s this new the Super Shoes right every brand has them now it’s helping her recover and it’s keeping her fresh and she just set a new PB in Houston not because of the shoes it’s the athlete in the shoes but she’s

Able to train harder and stay fresh and I asked him most importantly how does she keep her mind fresh and she he said she just loves it her kids are running and just having fun as beex likes to say it’s got to be the shoes it’s got to be

The Sho we got some fast shoes on right now we the women on the left men on the right yeah though they are all looking so good right now we have Garrett shipper from the Netherlands they leading the way for the wheelchair race for the men’s today the green there he

Is in the green he is looking so so strong and suzan sconi coming in first on the women’s on the left of the screen um we are where are we at here on Pace let’s check it out here so Garrett is looking at around a 353 per mile super

Super strong how big of a surprises this we thought we would see Daniel romanchuk here leading the race at this point we did Garrett has just come off he won the 2023 Cape Town Marathon um also quite an undulating course so maybe we are seeing

Him Excel here at a course like this you know what I really like is last year yetti plat was our our champion he’s not here this year but he came from the triathlon world and so has Garrett Schiffer he is a triathlete as well and I think just the the strength and the

Speed and the determination and you know just being now sort of newer on the roads it’s kind of fun to see a new guy up there and they are making the 13.1 M Trek carry and Becks that starts in Brooklyn and ends here in Central Park

Yeah well they are out in Prospect Park that’s where they’re going to start there are lots of hills in the first three miles you have to be a little bit controlled in the early stages because in the later stages we’re going to see the hills again but making their way

Through Brooklyn they you see that 2 miles they are still going up and down through 3 miles and then they have a nice little downhill before 4 and then they’re going to start crossing over into Manhattan they absolutely are once they get the peak of that bridge it is downhill as

They head off of that lovely chap All the Way North on the FDR Drive running along the river through the Lower East Side of Manhattan passing mile 9 they are going to then quite soon turn left onto 40 seconds Street they are heading into the thick of it now this is when

The excitement is going to start building they’re going to turn right onto sth Avenue and they are going to run through through the Magnificent Time Square it’s so much fun they’re going to enter Central Park turning left final mile of the race coming up we’ve got some undulating Hills again in here but

They’re not going to mind right now because the end is insight and there it is reversed to the TCS New York City marathon but nonetheless absolutely wonderful when they do the new I love New York commercials to get tourists to come to the city they should have Becks

Waste those yes so much excitement About Time Square I’m not sure I’ve ever heard well they only shut it down for this race I that’s pretty spectacular right it’s awesome yeah second time that New Year’s Eve and for this race they shut it down so pretty cool stuff wonderful

Well the men have come through their second mile average of around a 434 per mile that was 9919 for 2 miles so we I mean they are they’re crushing they’re looking around a 60 Minute again we’ve got to take these Hills into consideration if car as Carrie said

Earlier the wind is due to potentially pick up later on in the race so we’ll see how that will affect these Paces by the way the men’s open division record is 5924 that is the course record set back in 2007 oh well that’s about time that got broken it’s

About time 17 years later maybe today’s the day we’ve talked about that they have changed the course a little bit so it is a little different now they don’t have quite as much of a open air down on was it Westside Highway West Highway yeah they get some headwinds a lot of

Times well it would be it’s a headwind either way I like to say on the side highway no matter which way running you feel like there’s a headwind well zare telby this is the guy that a lot of people here in America didn’t quite know of until he started running super fast

In college and now everyone is so pumped for him to transition and he’s getting into the longer stuff so we SE we’ve seen him run the marathon he’s a 206 guy I believe over 26.2 he’s you know fairly new he’s only run a couple but he is

Hoping to make his team he has not been named yet to his team for Morocco but he’s he’s knocking at the door and he’s got an interesting story right now he really does right now he is celebrating Ramadan so he is coming off fasting and it’s going to be a very

Interesting race for him and very interesting to see how he goes over this 13.1 miles today well if you thought beex was excited about Time Square wait till we check in with Britney Bell who’s standing by live as we get ready for the kids race today good morning

Britney good morning Ryan and I’m here with Sasha who’s participating in the kids raid Sasha is also a New York Road Runner youth Ambassador that program is a free program that Services 137,000 students Nationwide but bringing it back local Sasha you’re going to run the race later now tell me do you have

Any goals for this one mile race um I want to run a little faster than usual I want to really push my limit and run as fast as I can and try my best I like it ambitious goals now how does it feel to get the chance to run through something

As iconic As Time Square that’s right it usually feels like exciting with all the ads and people cheering me on and it just feels like wow all of these people are looking at me I should really try my best and show them that I can do it

Great getting that extra boost from the crowd now tell me what do you like about running I like running because it just helps me feel my best and me and my friends run around during recess at school and we play freeze tag so that’s just a way of thinking about my friends

Too and I like that you mention friends because my next question is what advice would you give to other kids who are thinking about getting into running who might be a little nervous um never give up and start small and keep at a constant pace and like run every week or

So and don’t run too fast when you’re starting to run run slow and then faster and faster and faster all right you sound like a pro already so Sasha is ready and so are the other 1500 kids that are going to participate and youth race later this morning Ryan we’re

Looking forward to it Britney always one of our favorite parts of the NYC have seen the kiddos out there running through a shutdown Time Square back to the professional women’s field what are we looking at here Carrie and Beck well I think it’s so interesting to see that

We still have quite a bit of a pack we have what two four six athletes pretty much still in it quite a bit different than the men’s race already and they’ve just they’re they’re on the toughest part right now let’s the toughest part and elevation let’s say we don’t want to

Say the toughest part overall climbing up the Manhattan Bridge this is where we’re going to start seeing the pack split up I would say we’re going to start to have a bigger distance between the stronger Runners at the front well Gladis chep karui she is someone that we always have to talk

About she’s the fastest woman in the field 10546 she is leading today she’s a just a racer and she loves to run she ran nine half marathons in 2023 and Cynthia limo 10604 she won that silver medal in 2016 it was has been a little bit of a

Uh time since she ran and won medals but she’s coming back she’s been through a lot Cynthia limo she is a mother of two but she did have a child that passed away before she was 2 years old she went through a deep depression she lost her

Agent you know she’s gone through heavy things in life but she’s back and she’s running and she loves this sport she splits time between here in America and in Kenya and she’s been racing a lot so a lot of people know her name here in the state Cynthia limo and she’s still

In this race we don’t see her in picture right now but never count her out there’s still time to race so much to run and to Beck’s Point both of these ladies are also making their NYC half debuts yeah so a lot of debuts here we’re having today which is adding

Another layer to this race if you will it really is as Cali thery just powering up the last bit of the the bridge there before we head into the Descent down into Manhattan they’re all looking very strong it doesn’t look like the wind is picked up you know at that higher point

Of the race which is fantastic uh can see Caroline gral was looking pretty good right there at the front yeah Caroline gral she’s had such a fun career you know she is so good over the cross country course I love that I mean a lot of athletes that

Transition to the roads they sort of go there because listen there’s a lot of prize money to be won and you know you don’t really necessarily go back and forth although we’re seeing sport change a little bit a lot of track athletes are moving to the roads and going back and

Forth but grll has done that in her entire career I mean she’s a phenomenal cross country Runner and I love that she’s stayed on the grass a lot of people don’t do that and she Pro she’s proven it time and time again three-time European CrossCountry Champion you

Ladies have run this course when you’re coming down the bridge are are we to assume that their easy passes are strapped onto them or holding them so their toll charge goes through you don’t come to Brooklyn often there’s no easy pass it’s free to get to our

Side we need to do something about that well there’s definitely No Easy Pass when you’re running like this for sure maybe on the way down we have to think about the downhill coming into that quite quite quick turn that they’re going to do to head back up uh North

Onto the FDR uh one thing I love about this race though is is running along the FDR when do you get to do that I mean I’m sure a lot of New Yorkers want to do it when it’s back toback traffic trff you want to get out and run instead of

Sit there but this is absolutely one of the best days to do to just get out run along a very very heavy traffic race back to the wheelchair races yeah Susanna scaron is up quite a bit about two minutes up from a little over two minutes from Tatiana mcfaden right now

But Tatiana mcfaden back there in second place I love that she’s grinding her way back she’s got a new coach she was really looking forward to running fast on the track and on the roads she is she’s got her ticket to Paris as well so

Pretty pretty fun to see her back she is and then on the men’s side on the right of the screen coming through the 15K Garett Shi is up there looking very strong that was a 3435 right now he’s in first place continuing on I mean how far back we’ve

Got that’s about just under 90 seconds between him and Evan caral who’s coming in second place right now um looking to see Daniel romanchuk yeah we haven’t seen him in the in the results for a bit so not quite sure what’s going on with Daniel the men are currently around Mile

10 women are at Mile 9 on the wheelchair race today so we’re closing in on the finish I would say the majority of the hills are done right now once we get into Central Park they are going to have a couple of undulating Hills but at the

End back to the pro side the professional women on the left the men on the right all right so on your right we have the professional men we have Abel Kip chumba we have zoh Hillary B and Y Mani Hal salati are coming in top

Four right now and as you can see I mean zoh is looking unreal to me right now he just looks like he’s cruising his way through this race today I want to point out though Hillary Bor this is his first time running a half marathon he’s in the

Blue in the middle this guy’s coming from the track a steeple chaser in Tokyo but really trying to see what he’s made of on these longer races and exciting to see that base that he’s building as we get set to join our ABC audience here in a matter of moments

Pedro and Tony thank you so much for looking live at the professional women and professional men’s race as they make their way from Brooklyn to the finish line here in Central Park but All Eyes On Time Square as we are getting ready for the kids raise some 1500 children

About to participate and that is where Britney Bell is standing by hi Britney hey Ryan I’m joined with CEO of New York Road Runners Rob similare and his daughter Julia now Rob you’ve been running this organization for a year and a half but how special does it feel to

Have your daughter participating in a New York Road Runner event oh it’s exciting we love it you know our our events are all about adults and kids you know all getting the experience to run together and today we’ve got an amazing youth race over 1500 kids will be

Running right here in Time Square and it’s amazing they’ve got the whole place to themselves you know and there’s no no car traffic one of only two times a year where there are no cars in Time Square so it’s a great opportunity for our kids to run she’ll have a great time running

A mile and then of course the adult race will be coming past here as the kids are running as well and I can just feel your pride beaming about her running this race how rewarding is it to pass on the love of running to your your kids it’s

Amazing I mean she’s you know really gotten into it she ran cross country in high school this year and you know running is a family sport every parent parent who runs can pass it on to their kid and it’s a sport you can enjoy your entire life so I’m just so excited for

Julia to be running and everybody out there if you’re a runner get your kids running you can run with them you can go to their races or just you know make sure they experience all the physical and the mental benefits that come from running and Julie we only have a couple

Of seconds left but how do you feel about the race this morning I’m really excited I haven’t run a mile race before so I want to just see how it goes and see how fast I can go and yeah I’m really excited to do it I’m sure you’re

Going to do a great job thank you guys so much for joining us and good luck to all of everyone everyone participating in the races today Ryan thank you Britney ages 2 through 18 will be participating on that run through Time Square team for kids was founded in 2002

By a group of Runners who wanted to support New York Road Runners Youth and Community programs in the two plus decade since tens of thousands of Runners have joined the team and together they’ve raised more than $100 million for programs encouraging people of all ages and abilities to get out

There and get active to learn more about how you can add meeting to your miles go to runwith tk. org Pedro and Tony that’s the story from here for now we’ll send it back to you in the studio we are nearing the finish line for the professional men’s wheelchair

And again guys we’re surprised to see Nazi I should say who we thought would be here at this point abely are yeah so we’ve got less than two miles to go here on the professional men’s wheelchair race gett shiver is is up there he is doing this thing today just checking

Behind him seeing if anyone is closing in on his race it doesn’t look like there’s anyone within eyesight um to us right here he’s had a pretty you know onetoone race I would say as he comes into Central Park now he’s going to start to I would suppose visualize the

Finish line start to really focus in on that last one and a half miles of push that he’s going to have going up and down these Hills yep there’s a the full shot there’s nobody behind him so maybe he’s going to take it a little easier right now um

Unsure whether he was going for a specific time today but he’s he’s really worked hard so far turning into Central Park oh my goodness there we go what a feeling that has to be yeah so Evan car is just over 2 minutes behind him St maintaining it we have another

Brit coming inide proud of my country man I love it um so yeah he he’s got plenty of time here if he wanted to well listen the record erns van djk 2017 4728 he was running that at 44 so could we see a new record

Here we just need see we just need to see we don’t want to jinx don’t want to jinx it absolutely not um so going back to the professional races women on the left of the screen there yeah we see that is glattus chep ky who is in the

Lead you know I was talking to her her agent as well and he said she is an aggressive racer I said what kind of what does she like to do out there and he said she likes to get out she likes to dictate and she likes to lead you

Know but she was really excited about be being here she is not a mom but she comes from a large family she has five sisters so you know when you are aggressive that might be because you’re fighting for some attention at home when you have five sisters

But Edna kipot again just you know steady Eddie you know that’s uh steady Edna I should call her oh you go but yeah you know her agent and and longtime dear friend said you she is so meticulous over nutrition and just training and resting and recovery but

She is a mother of two she’s got these great athletes for kids as well I mean such an inspiration for kids to look at their mom and say I can do it as well they’re golfers and great Runners as well oh my goodness spending so much

Time on their feet those courses so here are the men again we’re remaining quite unchanged in the race here as the men are coming down off the Manhattan Bridge taking their turn into the FDR run up north there so it’s interesting to see zohi and Hillary B running so tightly

Together today they actually do train together so wondering whether they are putting in some training run tactics right here for this race able Kip chumber also looking incredibly strong um and then behind them we have um yeni Hal salasi so a really strong front of

The pack they seem to be tucking in um towards one another as we’re coming down I’m wondering whether we’re going to see a breakaway with the men’s on the FDR potentially but back here watching Garrett chipper he trains in the Netherlands he’s a father of girls as

Well he wanted to come over here and to proove himself but again like y a plat last year we saw such a great race that was his debut over the half marathon try athletes coming to this course and just crushing it absolutely he is very close

His time at the moment we have just about half a mile to go before we see garri come over the line right behind us here the final little bump I mean you know you think of coming into Central Park here and it doesn’t look like it’s

Much but both sides of the finish line of the New York City marathon and the half you have a bit of an incline and the athletes really got to dig deep those final 400 meters absolutely nothing better than a Finish Line on the top of a hill but now he’s coming down

That hill with his Finish Line in sight but it will be another big another big push here Ryan as he crests this hill Ern van dijk’s record will live to see another day he just passed it just passed it but oh so close really styling eff really close to a new course record

Here today for Garrett shipper of the Netherlands he suffered a spinal CT injury and a plane crash back in 2004 he’s excelled in Paris Sports ever since and he’s about to win his first ever United Airlines NYC hat a sh’s thinking of each of his three beautiful girls

Right now and how proud they’re going to be of their father well coming here to New York to race against such great Fields I mean you have you get such a confidence boost and he’s going to have one he really is well well deserved he is literally 200 M

From his Finish Line crossing the mile 13 marker here he comes here we go just to see him in his final push here you look you think he’s not sprinting he is moving as fast as he can he can see that clock no one is on his shoulder but

Here we bring in our winner Garrett shipper of the Le Netherlands the men’s wheelchair winner of the United Airlines NYC the on his face he is a winner absolutely love to see it Garett sheer a two-time par Olympian both Rio 2016 Tokyo 2020 he’s 46 years old and

Now he is the champion of the United Airlines NYC half oh this feels so good to be done yeah massive congratulations to G representing the Netherlands there b we call this an upset today absolutely not okay cuz we thought Roman chuck would be there we did and you know it’s

It’s sad not to see him come in and claim another champ but at the same time I love seeing someone new no surprise here on the women’s side Carrie yeah Susanna scaron she knows how to race here she runs the mini she runs the marathon she runs the half she knows New

York City and she wants to come back here she wants to prove herself and like I said it’s a confidence boost for anyone but when you win here time and time again I mean this woman knows how to race the World Marathon Majors so does a woman next to me she’s done all

Six that’s Gentry but no Susanna scon she says this is a really important kind of community here family for her here and she’s getting ready to run Boston this spring lots of things lots of factors but right here right now this is big on her resume being the

United Airlines and myc half champ scaron looking to win backto back here in New York and back to the professional men and women’s field the professional men have come through mile 6 at 2740 which puts them they are flying right now we are looking at looking at

Under 1 hour half if they stay on Pace um the pack have stayed together on the men’s as you can see there we have AEL Kip chumba we have t b and halasi really really just sticking strong together here I’m really interested to speak to them afterwards

To see any race tactics that they they may have been employing kind of a fun fact about bore and Hal salasi he is they both are steeple Chasers right they were fifth in the Tokyo games and seventh in the Tokyo games now moving but look right here we can see t trying

To stretch it out a little bit you know he knows that these guys behind him they have powerful kicks he wants to run that out of them a little bit I know it’s not a Sprint race right now we’re not running a 3K steeple but they still have

That and they are newer to running these longer distances telby not so much and he also is proving himself to his Federation back home in Morocco he wants to show his Fitness he wants to win this race and he wants to go into a spring Marathon really with the confidence he

Needs to run in the Paris games so you like this his strategy right here at this point of the race if you’re him I do I like that he’s he’s our top returner from last year he’s third he’s really feeling out what it means to be a

Road racer and he’s really tackling this road racing career and doing a great job with it he’s showing so much confidence as well just taking the lead there the others are catching up to him it’s going to be a little bit of a game I would

Think going along the FDR um we’re going to truly understand who’s got the grip we got a lot happening in both races as we look at the women’s field yeah groov doll has just been hanging out in second place and then there’s Edna too they’re starting to lose

Cynthia Lio but Cynthia is trying to hold on and and you know this better than anybody Beck there are times in these distance races where you go through ups and downs the es and flows sometimes you’re feeling good sometimes you’re not sticking with it right now Cynthia limo does not want to lose

Contact she doesn’t want to get into no woman’s land she wants to have people around her to pull her along if she is hurting right now absolutely you can see her right now leaning into it a little bit more she is definitely on the heels of the pack and as Carrie said she

Doesn’t want to let them out of her sight she wants to still feel that she’s being pulled along with those three at the lead there she has the Moto right by her there so that’s going to give her a sense of the community in that pack but

As they Edge towards the northern part of the FDR before they turn left into the central uh part of this run I’m going to be very interested to see how they stick together there because that that’s gon to that’s going to be when we start to see a split happening because

It stays flat but you’ve got the turns you’ve got the finish in sight Cynthia she’s looking like she’s holding on I’m just wondering about the right hand side of her body there that’s in my in my coach’s eyes just thinking oh oh yeah get back on there get back out there you

Can keep doing it how about group doll we’ve talked about her a lot today she’s finished third in this race three separate times three separate times are we surprised to see her right here and it is today the day she finally well she said goes over

The top and wins this she said her prep and her winner training has been going really well she’s been in altitude camp in Spain for January and February so she’s really looking to test her form she said the goal is top three and she did say she wanted to win which we know

She does but you know sometimes I think not putting that extra pressure she’s been here she’s done that been in the top three she wants to come back and do something good not go too crazy where she maybe doesn’t run her own race as we check back in on the women’s wheelchair

The Runaway leader Susanna scaron she’s the top women’s wheelchair racer in the country and she is showing us why Susanna scarron said that her shoulders been bothering her just a little bit but she’s working through it and it’s been feeling good she said her big focuses this year are this race Boston Marathon

And the Paris games she was so pumped to hear about the fields here but I think one thing that we haven’t talked a lot about was that she was third in Tokyo and you know that that’s kind of riding on her like she she’s won the majors now

She’s kind of got the taste and you know that she came into this racing and I want another win absolutely she’s also coming off Tokyo which is an undulating course so she has the practice of these Hills fishing a very similar way as you do in Tokyo to here right now she is

Very close to coming right behind us for her final straight there is a big gap between her and second place right now in the women’s wheelchair race I think we saw that in both races today with exactly yeah I think we’re looking at over a 3 minute Gap right now uh so you

Know she’s I I don’t think suzanna’s going to look over her shoulder I don’t think she might races like that uh she’s fully confident that she’s got this again she is really sprinting into the Finish as she comes down that final decline into this as uh as we pointed

Out this cheeky little uphill Finish Well what I love about Susanna scrone as well is she’s a youth Ambassador for New York Road so she’s out there running and participating for team for kids like she just thinks about all of the things that she’s doing this for you know she’s

Doing it to help other kids that are in the same position as she was when she ended up in a wheelchair and she said she’s just been given so much great stuff in life because of her competitive career less than 200 to go here we are back toback wins for S Susanna scaroni

She sees the Finish Line she comes another relief it’s just such a powerful athlete you can see that Hill I mean yeah that Hill is really showing right now y but she has put in the effort today put in the grind smiling I love smiling it’s it’s only a couple of

Weeks since Tokyo so I mean come on and for the second straight year Suzanna scaron the winner of the United Airlines NYC hat got another smile of relief that we see this is her third win at this race the 32-year-old for Champagne Illinois well I got to see her the other night at

The theater I mean she takes it all in she loves it she says something that she really likes to do here is have some good coffee so I don’t know where she goes but she I was like what do you like to do whatever she’s had know I like

What do you like to do in New York she’s like get some good coffee go to a show she takes it all in as well but I feel like this is one of her second homes you know she’s in Illinois training but she really loves the streets of New York and

How can you not love this scene dranked in the American flag A great win for her country here today at the United Airlines NYC hat huge and back to the Pro Race as we go checking in on the men and the women so the men looking good we

Have a change in the lead right now we have able K chumba has taken on this is the fastest man on the course today he has a personal best of 5807 you know he has been injured in 2022 he had an injury and he’s been coming back kind of clawing his way back

He’s a 206 marathoner I mean he’s got great pedigree he’s got a great stat his CV is awesome right but it really is uh you know he spent 6 hours at the airport the other day looking for his luggage so his so he is like the rest of us yes he

Is yeah you know his first time here in New York maybe isn’t what he really wanted to be doing with spending that time but JFK claims another one oh my goodness well the men have just come through the 8 Mile Marker uh so they have just about five miles until they

Arrive behind us here a lot can change lot can change in 500 meters look at that A’s trying to really push again so we saw hair take off and try to put a little bit of a surge on this is what sport is all about like seeing who’s

Gritty enough who’s confident enough to go for it people say distance running can be boring Ryan that is nothing far but the truth so far from the truth no so far from the truth I the distance between the three of them right now strangely looks equal to me yeah it

Looks very but I do think that that means that there’s just some cat and mouse a little bit right like they’re they’re starting to throw some surges in from this angle maybe you could think that Hillary B and zoh are somehow Co coordinating their thoughts because of

Their training you know this is just me going into yeah and now on the women’s side they’re still packed together I mean they you know Edna has won here before groov doll has been third here three times but then Cynthia has not won here before but she has run here in New

York she has you can see a slight change there in the two3 position Caroline groov doll just dropped slightly behind Edna kipat maybe we think thinking another battle for third here I’m really rooting for groov dos come in seconds how much of that past experience in those three

Races where she’s finished third how much is she trying to do something differently now this time around to avoid that same finish can she change her strategy a little bit she she could the the weather has been so vastly different as Britney said earlier we are

20° warmer today than it was last year such a toll on how you run how you perform how you feel how you Fu abs everything so you know she’s looking strong as great as her accet have been she has raced a lot recently so you never know coming into this whether

That’s played a factor or not I mean personally if I was running next to Ed the kipet though I mean that would just me I’d be an all absolutely and there’s probably some of that going on as we speak well I love that groov doll and

Edna kot are coming off of new personal records this year I mean they are in the form of their life and they’re enjoying it and they’re you know I think that those two are in the right position right now I think that they’re letting glattus take the lead and she’s been

Doing the work the entire way they know that she’s got quite a bit of a faster PB than both of them but they are in the hunt right they’re the hunting right now and she can feel that you know when someone’s right there and not going away

Yeah they’re not going to be looking over their shoulders at all so I’m I’m just going to take us back to the the right hand screen here back to the professional men’s as you can see tell tell’s coming through I mean there’s this cat and mouse game is really un

Unveiling itself to us I feel like the two men here at the front they are pushing one another the pace has picked up a little we’re looking at a 435 per mile Pace as they came through the 8 Mile Marker in 3642 tby says he loves the hills he’s

Ready for it now when he gets into Central Park he’s he said he trains on the Hills he’s ready for it but is training through Ramadan right now he’s really in that the thick of that where he has to train hard Ryan in the evening

After he can break his fast so he he says he doesn’t do much like much of his hard work some threshold work if we want to get technical um so he does some Tempo running some lighter workouts before when he might be fasting but afterwards is really where he hits his

Race pace so it’s late at night 10 p.m. he can’t drink throughout the day so it’s very hard he said sometimes he feels refreshed but it also once once Ramadan is done it’s like okay now I can get back into normal training yeah so right now being first thing in the

Morning for him we’ll see how this how this affects his body um you can really see they’re they’re almost toe for toe right now stride for stride together uh I I wonder whether his his passion for the hills that he he’s got at the moment is going to let him shine or whether

Able’s going to come through let’s talk about the fasting here for a second how much it contrast to what a typical Runner would have what would what would the two of you have before a race in terms of fueling up when he’s not having anything at all I mean you’re going to

Go in for a pretty good meal the night before for sure the morning of especially For Speed you want something that’s going to store give you that stored energy you want some glucose you want the glycogen you want something that’s going to give you that hit of

Energy when you need it and then throughout the race normally you’re going to be fueling with some sort of gel drink whatever of the athletes Choice it is so for him doing this with absolutely nothing makes it even more impressive makes it very very impressive uh I I’ve never thought of running 13.1

Without the hydration without you know thinking about what how am I going to be replacing things as I’m running uh you got to wonder whether that is going to be like I know at the end of races for me when I am a little depleted my thought process is a little bit off

Course so whether he’s going to be starting to push at a different point having said that he’s been training through welled in doing this y as now some of these guys are picking off the professional women which also helps them like have something to focus on when

There’s someone up in front of them but zo zare is starting to really push that’s talby in the lead again third here last year if you’re just starting to tune in this has been kind of a back and forth between and zare up in the lead I like that Zar is taking the

Downhill he’s he’s owning the downhill here and I feel like he is saying to I do you want to come with me right now I saying I’m going to watch you for a minute sir well when you’ve run 58 minutes as Kip chumba has done he

Knows that he’s got it in them that was though in 20201 so it’s been a little bit of a while few years he his last half marathon was 101 and that was last fall in Boston at the baa half and continuing with the theme this is ob’s

NYC half debut another racer today that we’ve said is running this course for the first time on the women’s side though the that pack of three they’ve been working together they really have glattus kept CH chep Karo excuse me she has been out there from the very beginning just leading this entire way

And that’s what you know we’ve heard is that she likes to push she likes to be in command and a quick check of the leaderboard we have three American women currently in the top 10 Dez Lindon is eighth Jenny sson is ninth and Jackie Gore the youngest runner in the field of

The pros is currently in 10th interesting to see Clayton Young there on the men’s he uh you know I don’t think he was there up in the top 10 but running his race running his race probably with a smile on his face right now through through the streets of New

Yor so the women there just for your information coming through the 10 mile marker at 5309 that puts them at a 519 Pace now they’re back in the women are back climbing they are not going to be now on that nice downhill they’ve got

To go go up and down and up and down until they get here running through the Magnificent Time Square there well said be did you know that every night in Times Square there’s three minutes where all of the boards are changed to artwork oh I did not know that I did not know

That you’re welcome you you do work for the touris of I’m just pitching myself you’re getting a deal out of this I have a good feeling about it so glus on the left there just seems like she’s trying to put a little distance I’m sure she’s feeling the crowds now she can

Hear people screaming for her she knows she’s getting close to the park but yeah this is It’s just interesting and the kipot you know we T we’ve watched her time again on the Marathon course here in New York in Boston you know that’s really where she shows a lot of her her

Cards in Boston she’s playing in every situation there and she’s always so composed she’s so smiley and nice and yet kind of lethal on that course really is looks like glattus can’t shake them no no no she’s trying you could see uh it looked like Edna was opening up her

Stride there coming in close to the final two miles Caroline groov doll in her third place yeah glattus I do think though she’s coming off of running 106 in February so she is very fit she was third in Barcelona in that race and you know she she might just be waiting she

Might just be kind of biing her time we’ll have to see they’re running through the Magnificent Time Square well done closed down for just the second time of the year the second and only time look at that New Year’s Eve and the new New York City half so this is going

To give them all a boost I would think running through one of the iconic parts of New York as you can hear there they’ve got a lot of support from the crowds once they exit and they carry on running up Seventh Avenue they’re going to start to see the Park it’s a

Beautiful time of year not quite got the blossoms on show yet everywhere a few trees a few trees but the green they’re going to start to see the opening um and then that’s it then the finish line is in sight but don’t you think right here

Beex this is where Groove doll has to reattach and hang on I mean these are those moments where they’re starting to push and this is where you it makes or breaks you right here and Edna too Edna has her eyes on her but I think rudall being in third there knowing that she’s

Been here time and time again she’s got to recommit and she’s got to stay on it she is and she’s so close to them there isn’t a big gap between them at all they are very much they’re not in a tight pack but they’re still in a pack they’re

Still running together they’re still feeding off of one another’s energy um obviously Gladis can’t see them again she’s not going to look over her shoulder until probably until they turn into Central Park and she can hear them she can hear them she can hear them I’ve always wanted to have microphones on the

Runners I know back to the men’s race so they are about about to go through Time Square now and tby is a two horse race right now tby is holding on I mean he’s not just holding on he’s he’s pushing Aral to to follow him and as you can see

There Aral is actually trying to close the gap whether he will take the lead for a second again if we had those little tiny mics on them we’d know if they were saying after you sir you take the lead right now we can have that for next year’s race we’ll pull some strings

But there we go so has now just Tak over zoha and we are so there less than three miles to go there we go thank you for being my eyes quick math quick math not my strong point oh but just as we were talking about it there’s Kumba up in front I

Mean those two going back and forth and that’s what it’s all about I love that we have that kind of race going on you know when you bring these great fields in you want to be able to toss that time out the door and just race especially on

A year where we have such great International competition at the Olympic Games how much are you conserving your energy we’re less than three miles till the Finish they’re neck and neck and at what point do you say okay now is when I make my final push and are they both

Maybe thinking the same thing and does that have to factor into your decision- making they probably have a similar race strategy I would think in their mind over the half I would say once they get onto Central Park South before they make that final left turn into the park they

Are probably going to make the decision on their energy levels in order to push for the final mile mile and a half here as they’re running side by side they are going to be feeding off of the energy so I think it’s going to be it’s going to be

Grit I feel like it’s going to be down to the end and this is what I love about running we saw it at the US Olympic trials on the men’s side with Conor mans and Clayton young people think running is such a solo Sport and then you see

Those two Runners coming in together yes they train together yes they know each other very well yes they’re Brothers but but like right here these two are not teammates they are competitors but they’re sticking together do you go in with your plan and does that change

Based on what the other guy is doing you have to be able to Pivot in running you absolutely have to be able to Pivot I say you have to fly by the seat of your pants when you’re racing you have to because you do you have to be willing to adjust and you

Know to definitely get going we have heard that Edna Kat’s Fallen back just a little bit but she’s still there she’s still looking solid she still got them in her sight yep groov doll though I want to mention groov doll is a sub 15minute 5K athlete so for those of you

Who know track and field times that’s blazing right I mean the world record now is is knocking at the door of breaking 14 minutes but she is so fast on the track but also so strong on the roads and as we’ve mentioned time and time again when you’ve been third here

Three times I don’t think you want to be third here again no and you can see that you can see that you know she is she is neck neck and neck really with gladus kepi and look how calm they both they both look so calm and this is something

That uh you know all Runners of all levels we aspire to the next level up of calmness and how about both of these races are kind of mirroring each other right now both Runners neck and neck yeah Z here tby I mean there comes a

Point where you want to be able to sit and kick if you are this close to each other you know if he’s not going to run the kick out of OB then let’s relax maybe a little bit and just wait and how about the kids races the 1500 youngsters

Ages 2 to 18 that’s why their pace is increasing right now yeah they’re getting inspired by the Next Generation and then and the they’re inspired to watch these athletes that are going to the Olympics you can’t get feat by a 5-year-old out there ladies you got to

Pick up the pace a little bit oh I’m going to put Tula in for this next year she’ll be to one yes yeah I mean this is just so amazing for these kids to see all of these strong athletes coming past them yeah just an awesome visual right

To see these tube guys that are at the top of their sport running next to a bunch of children through an empty Time Square they just need to be careful because I don’t know about all of you but racing these youngsters I’ve you know strained a hammy here and there so

These guys got to stick to their race plan no straining of the hammies right here um but yeah now for the first time we’re seeing Groove doll move to the lead we go and that that means that she’s feeling good she would not have done that had she not been feeling good

And she’s starting to push and I do think this can play a little bit into the psyche of glattus you can glus is falling back she’s falling back she’s moved slightly out to the side which you know if if you really are thinking about staying with your Runner you’re going to

Stay kind of close to them um you can see Caroline there just looking over her shoulder checking on where gladus is probably giving her a boost of confidence knowing that she’s a few STS back she’s really extending that lead she really is she’s on a downhill right

Here they’re running about a 509 per mile they came through the 12mile marker in 6331 here we go she’s leaning into a little dip of the chin right she’s not necessarily looking too far up she’s looking right keeps checking she keeps checking that internal conversation that

Is going on in her head right now of she’s she’s just keeping herself positive she keeping herself strong 10721 the course record Helen OB in 2023 just last year fantastic okay wow AB has made a big move right now he has decided to say goodbye sir and we talked about

What his strategy might be he just turned it on even a little sooner than you may have thought and what are those beautiful trees you see up ahead of you Central that is our shining Central Park and that is what has has given him the inspiration perhaps to push on ahead

Before he makes that turn into the park today so back to Caroline Groot she’s still checking over her shoulder there still making sure that she has put enough distance between herself and Gladis who who led the way for 12 miles did she really went for it but you know

One thing that I think is interesting Greta vites is a nine-time You a nine-time New York City marathon Champion she’s the great from Norway Norway she passed away years ago but that is somebody that groov doll thinks about every time she comes to New York City and especially when you enter Time

Square and then into Central Park like you know that Greta vites has run these routes and she wants to be like her and so groov doll is making her own name here but running obviously I think with gret aites in her thoughts as all of us

Think of when we think of the new Norwegian Runner which is groov doll I think we think a lot of gret of so what a woman she’s closing in we have point7 of a mile to go on the professional women’s race here today at the United Airlines NC h

Can see her head Caroline grall’s head up right now she she brought her husband to town I love that like they’re having a fun weekend wow here we go okay so no European woman has won here since 2010 so that was Mara yamachi from Great Britain and she’s too a great marathoner

As well did you hear how excited beex was when he said great BR I know could just in her voice she loves it talking of Great Britain we can see Cali ther down in sixth place right now still running an absolutely fantastic race with Fabian schump behind her there

These women are really really putting in the work today I can’t imagine what’s going through Caroline groov dar’s mind right now thinking what a run three times I’ve been here three times I’ve been third and today checking she’s checking over her shoulder again to make sure that she can think in her mind

Today is my day is the day well I think too when you are running and you’re getting ready to hopefully win this race for the first time and she knows what a huge race this is she’s got to be pumped about the Paris games this summer I mean

Every single race that you have a great result from coming into a big summer like this you got to be like things are going well training is going well how fun is that it’s going to it’s going to add on the layers to her cake of confidence like tell my athletes I’m

Food focused that’s I that was well said be here we go coming around that final [Applause] [Applause] Corner we are looking at the women’s race coming to a conclusion with Caroline groov doall of Norway sprinting towards the finish here in Central Park and what a race she put

On today yes she’s just looked back to check she saw the 200 M to go sign across the 13 Mile Marker and what a feeling that has to be what a feeling I love that she keeps checking I love that she can’t quite believe kind of surprising herself you know she is

Showing that she is like the rest of us when it comes to running you can get to the finish line and win your race and still not believe it well she’s a 10 time medalist from the European championships she’s going to win her first time here in New York City she’s

Been third here three times this is her fourth time here her husband’s here to watch her after three straight third place finishes fourth times a charm for Caroline group doll your United Airlines NYC half Champion wow what a run when she put it to her she put it to her here

Comes glattus chep karui very gutsy race for her as Welly race she really led the way for the vast majority there yeah what a fantastic performance by both of these women yes absolutely 10909 is The Unofficial time for Caroline groov doll 517 per mile and we check back in on the

Men’s race some separation has really opened up here ladies it really has AEL put his foot down he yes he did he was more than abble he was I don’t know how to follow that one the men came through the 12m marker in 55 12 that puts him at a

433 per mile interesting here we have about a 7c gap between abble and Zha so um as we’re seeing the the hills are not a problem for arble he is showing us how he got that 5807 personal best for his half marathon orbe it a couple years ago yeah well

Listen he’s run under 60 Minutes seven times this guy knows how to run fast but he also knows how to win and that’s more important today we’re looking at the course records 5924 said back in 2007 that is what we’re looking at the event record so he’s about 40 seconds off the

Pace can he do it ladies I don’t think might be a stret it might be a stretch but he’s going to be close he’s going to be close but even I think he’s just going to be so impressed with the composure that he had out there today he

Waited he waited until he wanted to go and then when he did it was so Ive it was so powerful and you know zare tby is a phenomenal Runner and for him to put him away in the final miles that is a powerful move yeah and not taking away

From what zuha did he really did show that grit that determination he he proved to the Federation that he you know should he race for Morocco he can show up y final little downhill and bend coming through for Aral Kumba here as he is point two from the finish line of the

NYC half looking so strong he literally looks like he is about to run faster than the Moto it really puts it in perspective how fast he’s moving when you see the Moto next to him he is Ming right along that’s for sure yeah and it is H great

To point out that Aral is the half marathon specialist compared to zoha who is in marathon training mode he just completed a fantastic one oh and here we see some of the here we go the female’s finishing up but we are watching AB as he gets close to that finish line and

Look at that turnover you know he squeezed down that pace to 433 even a little faster I think here in the final miles just ticking over one hour right now and in his us NYC half debut Abel kipchumba is your winner on the men’s side and he took all smile all smile I

Honestly that smile just broke my heart into pieces he looked thrilled and so he should be first time winners on both the men’s and women’s side ladies zuir TB has to be pleased with that he’s one place in front of where he was last year and he went for it he did incredibly

Strong performance Again by both of these athletes real inspiration coming together there that camaraderie that running Joy our top female from the US was Jenny Simpson she’s ran 11206 has to be pleased with that today sixth overall and we missed Edna as Edna Kip legot she finished third there the

44-year-old Edna kipat with a third place finish here at the United Airlines NYC half what a great day of racing we’ve had for you from Brooklyn to here in Central Park the fun continues on the apps in the meantime we’ll send it back to you guys in the studio

And here’s the third place finisher on the men’s side that is H I was waiting for you ladies to say I just had a look quick y you know one another interesting fact for him he was not wearing the super shoes today and yeah I heard from his coach and he said

You know that’s one of the things there Hillary boore right there also great both those two steeple Chasers yeah they’re I mean this course lends itself it does cross country Runners Chasers I mean anything anyone that I think has a little bit of agility and

Can move and to handle the the hills and you know just the turns and all of it the turns yeah the terrain just love to see all of these athletes finishing these tough races going against one another for 13.1 Mar and coming together at the ends with the

High with the hugs does it ever not Amaze you though that they didn’t even look like they even ran nobody’s out of breath they’re just sitting there having a conversation like nothing even happened nothing even happened so there we go we can see the results coming in

AEL Kip chumba 60 minutes and 25 seconds yep and he really did Squeeze that pace down so it was a you know it’ll be interesting to see the entire you know each mile by mile to see how much he did but you know they started out at 102 pace did 62 pace and

They got down to 60 minutes that’s pretty crazy well we talked about this being ideal conditions for all the races today and I think it kind of lived up to that it did it did and it’s interesting to see how the pack once they broke away on both the men’s and the women’s

Professional races here it’s it came true to the end so the three women who who kind of broke away together stayed together the four men that we had they broke away they stayed together to the end they came in which you know over a half that doesn’t always happen no but

There we go we have the the open division yeah head and now we’ve got a lot more smiles and Miles coming in now waves of more than 25,000 people taken to the streets for their 13.1 mile Journey from Brooklyn to Central Park on a glorious Sunday afternoon glorious one

Of the biggest races correct it’s the second largest half marathon behind half yeah but if this atual we have the most Runners this year any United St lines NC half and beex you’re coaching uh 20,000,000 was that the official more or L total absolutely more or less yeah

Fully fully uh taking over the whole field of the open division see what what the people at home can’t see was you texting strategies to all of your Runners while you’re broadcasting the was an incredible uh very way to uh what’s the word I’m looking for multitask thank you yeah you know we’ve

Just got to make sure that everybody gets their race strategy exactly correct so let’s check out the pren top three finishers and what was one heck of a race here on this St Patrick’s Day Sunday in New York City this is the proman wheelchair Garrett shipper the

Winner and Sam Ryan is standing by with Garrett right now Hi Sam hey there so uh just learned something new we’ve been calling him Garrett shipper but tell me how to pronounce your name properly just okay that’s what it is well congratulations we saw you raising your

Arms as you finished tell me about the emotion at that moment uh I didn’t expect actually that I make a chance on on a win I know Daniel just a little bit out of the books uh I do racing not so long uh so I really expected with his

Long arm with his strong body that he will blow me away on the first uphill sections but he was maybe 50 m in front of me me and his speed constantly keep the same as my speed and I was thinking okay yeah that what it is and then after

The the downhill section on the bridge he was slowing down and I was thinking okay maybe maybe the The Hairpin turn is maybe too sharp so I slow down oh actually afterwards too much but and then uh on the flat near the water uh I was looking back and looking back

Constantly and I he wasn’t there so I don’t know what happened with him but I was kind of realizing at that time uh maybe there is a win for me but I didn’t expect it and I’m kind of emotional in the way I’m so new in the sport um in

Particular racing um so yeah how is it possible that a guy from 46 can make it in a win in a decent strong field here in your New York City half day VI we can hear the emotion and the excitement congratulations to you than you very much thanks let’s send it

Back to you guys 46 years old Garrett shipper getting the win and my Scottish grandmother is going to be very disappointed in me that I did not know how to say his first name correctly you need to roll your r a little get it yeah there you go get it how about the

Women’s whe no I’m not going to try uh Americans one two Susanna SC scaron and Tatiana mcfaden two names we’ve come to expect to be a St the leaderboard I was thinking that those two would be out there but Eden rainbow Cooper she was right where she should be too right on

The the podium there but Suzanna scrone wow five minutes I mean that was a big win for she’s got to be pleased with that especially after she did mention that she was kind of struggling a little bit with the shoulder thing but clearly she’s she’s in good health Susanna

Scaroni back-to-back Champion here at the United Airlines NYC half and Sam has caught up with her here at the Finish Line yeah Ryan this is her eighth time in this race third time winning it and backto back for you congratulations what was the difference this year so a few

Things um this year we had the most amazing weather today so um last year was very cold um and for a lot of reasons we didn’t have much of a warm-up um but this year we had a great morning of warm up perfect weather um a great

Field as as we did last year but a different field um and so it’s always fun to be here what is it like solidifying this going into Boston heading into Boston um you know it’s always nice to come out here and do a half marathon before um before Boston

Marathon um because we train inside all winter um it’s nice to like slowly get used to some distances out on the road um but this is the beginning of kind of our outside training so it’s a nice it’s just nice to get out here on open roads

Hilly courses I don’t have that in Illinois and so um that’s a great training for Boston we saw the separation and we saw the smile as you finished so what is that ultimate feeling like like for you um it feels great I think um as I’ve gotten older um

I think you know I at the end of this race today I was thinking how much I do love the crowd um how much energy I get from cheering people cheering us on um what a great experience it is to be outside on a perfect day and um it

Brings me a lot of Joy congratulations thank you thank you guys back to you Susan scaron a winner here once again and could we have picked a better day to run this race so nice a glorious shot the five burrows here in New York City looking down on Time Square a my

New favorite place I think it’s been your favorite place I don’t think it’s your new favorite place but it is not fun to run through there never when it’s not shut down for all of us I mean stop and go stop and go but how cool is it as

A runner when you’re running through this when it is shut down I feel like you have it all to yourself you feel like a superstar no matter where you finish it is like a movie set it is exactly like abely how about the top three women’s results Give It Up to

Groove doll yes grooving her way to the finish today you’ve been wanting to say that the whole time absolutely I mean she just ran so smart the whole way patience patience patience I loved it patience and after three straight third place finishes Caroline groov doll gets

The big win here today Sam we’ll send it over to you yeah Ryan we’re going to talk about that right now three third place finishes here to finish this first how do you sum this up today uh uh I don’t know actually because I thought uh

Uh I struggle with the third place uh I think they I was so tired but then suddenly I get some some energy and uh yeah I could finish strong so I’m just so happy to take a win here it’s it’s been uh I had a dream to do that um but

Yeah it’s so fun fulfilling a dream they were talking about your patience during this what was key for you uh I just tried to uh to to to run easy to I was thinking about the finish uh but I know the the other girls was very strong so I

Actually just try to enjoy the race and uh and to have something left the last 2K and you certainly did and the first European woman to win this event since 2010 how special did you did not know that right so how special is that for

You oh that’s very cool H I really like to run in New York uh yeah it’s my fifth I’m running here but yeah I love it so to uh to win here is fantastic uh we have a Norwegian get at the vites who won so many marathons so I I feel like

I’m behind her and can try to do it uh uh as a Norwegian so that’s very cool congratulations thank you so much back to you guys Caroline groov doll has represented Norway at the last three Olympic Games and it was easy to see why today ladies y for sure and I love that

She talked about that being patient and just running kind of to have fun I’m so happy for her so happy for her to see that first place against her name um just talking about the history of Norwegian Runners really bringing that home for her the importance of representing her country here we haven’t

Seen her over 26.2 so maybe we’ll see her here in New York running that just like rites did goodness that would be absolutely wonderful what a great race and on the men’s side let’s take a look at the top three finishers and in his Marathon

Debut Abel Kumba gets it done and he is standing by with Sam right now here at the Finish Line Sam here with a bell in his debut in this event here in New York City what was that like for you uh today was a great day for me I won the race I

Might for New York City marathon uh this is my first time to be in New York I want to thank all New York City Road Racers and and race organizers for New York City I am happy to be the one most run today in New York City

Thank you we can see the excitement and the happiness from you can you tell me a little bit about in Time Square when you guys were making your way up be before you headed to the park you guys were close it was neck and neck when did you

Decide what was the mindset when you decided to make the move uh when we were running today we it is uh i b and win so today I set my mind and say I must to go I must Focus to to win this race you and you did congratulations AEL thank you

Back to you guys I liked at the end of the first question when he said thank you as if he wanted to just end the interview right there no further questions I mean he’s put in the hard work yeah he wasn’t going to away that easy that was not

Going to happen I love that he said he he really had to focus I think we saw that he demonstrated that he focused when they were playing together there and then put in he he he really dug his heels in and focus solo what a superstar

He is and he just loved his demeanor too after that race like it was that no big deal first time here in New York and got the win oh he is a he is a superstar he is a guy that we need to watch yes he

Came in with that fastest PB and was real close to break in an hour so it was fun to watch him another notch on the sub one hour half hour hour well and again we’ve been talking about this a lot it just goes back to the conditions that were kind of Ideal for

Some of these times that we saw here today yeah the wind really kept down and they also I loved how the races were neck and neck like you said I mean back and forth they could throw that time out the door and just really focus on racing

And getting all that hard training and mental training that they do for races like this they could show us you know what it was all about they certainly did on the opposite side on the men’s wheelchair race there was no together no I mean mean he was and on the women’s

Wheel wheelchair race as and on the women’s wheelchair race two runaways and speaking of the wheelchair races let’s go ahead and check out the highlights uh they started Bunch together ladies but it soon turned into a one horse race yeah we saw Daniel romanuk out in front

But then all of a sudden there goes Garrett is that how we say it gett well done he’s going to have to teach us but AB we will remember his name because this triathlete now NYC Half Half Marathon winner really showed us what what was up and he he brought up Daniel

Roman’s 6ot wingspan that he thought was going to put him back on the hill his face he is a winner at 46 years old in his debut you love to see it father three Evan Carell did fantastically well though he is a young athlete he has got so much ahead

Of him coming up uh British John Boy Smith there doing us proud but you can see Daniel Roman not having day that we’re used to back in eth but you know we have good days we have bad days and he is 14 minutes off the pace that’s certainly a big surprise

How about the women’s wheelchair highlights let’s go ahead and check those out well no surprise there to see s Susanna scon the defending champ from 2023 coming here today and just showing us that she is ready to go this year you know she has gone all over the world and

Race and been a factor in every single race since she was hit by that car after the Tokyo par Olympic Games so excited to see her out here again and she’s just so happy and and fun to watch she’s gritty but yet kind and just very sweet

Very strong just like her coffee that she enjoys here in New York she loves New York and it sha through today again that huge gap between Susanna scaron and Tatiana mcfaden um coming in their third again the Britain third today well done Eden rainbow Cooper a Wonder beautiful

Field of women racing suzan scaron backto back champions here at the NYC half how about the women’s Pro field wow what a race I mean right away big packs through about halfway through and then gladus chep karui just started to push and you know she was the one to watch we

Were talking about her from the start she was checking her watch she was making sure they stayed on Pace but groov doll and Edna kipot right there and Cynthia limo all four of those athletes the big dogs I think coming in but it ended up being those three Groove

Doll sort of falling off the pace we were wondering was she going to be able to hang and then she started put that pressure on had kind of a wakeup call it seemed like right when she got into Central Park and then made that push and finally won after placing three third

Here three times third here three times fourth times a charm as Ryan said I think it was amazing to see her her checking like I kept saying it checking over her shoulder and that absolute reinforcement of her training of her cross country experience coming through today to get her that very well-deserved

And long awaited win and she basically said I didn’t want to finish third again no she did not she manifested it through you can see our top American there Jenny Simpson along with Dez Lindon placing in the top 10 she loves this race she loves

What it does for her career and so fun to see her there having a solid 112 again today and finally on the men’s side well the men started off very strong quickly broke away into a lead pack of four there as you can see we have zohi

Hillary B and Aral Kip chumber between the two of them they traded places for most of this race today proving one after the other who was going to take the lead who was going to show the grit who was going to show the determination when aball finally took

The lead he broke away after running through this beautiful scene in Time Square as these two fantastic athletes were running alongside our kids race today he he he bit it off uh is is what I’m going to say he used his his smile I think it I think it was the blossoms on

The trees that pulled him in with a smile on his face to Central Park he put on 16 seconds in those final final miles there so he really put it down he was cooking he came here to to show us he came here to show up and he he seems to

Love New York I think so hopefully he’ll be back I have a feeling we’ll see him back shout out though to Hillary bour in his half debut he was fourth there top American Reed Fischer let’s give him a shout out last year he and his wife they

Were fighting through her cancer and now she is in treatment still but she’s doing well and we’re giving you Christine a big shout out Reed Fisher still showing up and even though they’re going through a lot in life so great race great race absolutely everyone Kena beell there down in seventh yes yeah

Still fantastic race great race fantastic race I think those have been the common themes of this day today what’s been your favorite part Carri oh my goodness that is so hard to say I think I love seeing Susanna scaroni just come back it’s so fun to see that she’s

Been able to return from such a scary accident and to do so well she just loves it here and so do I so it’s fun to see her race absolutely for me I’m going to play the European card or or not European card um seeing Caroline groov doll

Coming through and you know just just having that three time third place knowing that was on her mind all the way through especially when she sat there in third place after being in second place just just shining through and getting that first place dream come true today everything worked in in her favor

Including her training um but my day is going to continue getting better and better as I love watching the open Division come in and all of our Runners as you can see behind us making their way to the Finish Line with smiles on their faces today five waves of 25,000

Runners making their way here to Central Park day of first and so many with the Luck of the Irish on their side here today it’s been a day of breakthrough breakthrough wins here if you will the United Airlines NYC half Caroline groov doll and Abdel kipchumba dominant performances by the wheelers Garrett

Shipper and Susanna scaron and it is our pleasure bringing it to all of our viewers from all over the world spending your Sunday morning with us we appreciate it we can’t thank you enough and on behalf of Carrie tulson beex J Sam Ryan Britney Bell and our entire

  1. It was an Asics/Adidas duo on both women’s and men’s at the race front…until both Adidas pushed ahead. Interesting. Still, seems those new Metaspeed Paris are killing it.
