The Dutch design junctions in such a way that you can safely cycle or walk across them. More info: http://bicycledutch.wordpress.com/2014/02/23/junction-design-in-the-netherlands/
In the Netherlands separating types of traffic on the busier streets has proven to be much safer than sharing the same road space. But inevitably the types of traffic will have to cross each other paths. You need good junction design to make cycling attractive, convenient and safe.
In most countries of the world protected cycling infrastructure stops right before every intersection. Even when there are on street cycle lanes, they end where you need them most: at junctions. When Dutch street designers sketch a street they first draw the carriageway as narrow as possible.
Then they add cycle tracks that flow in a way that makes cycling a high-speed possible. Where the two meet, the crossing is at a right angle as much as possible. They use this design on larger traditional four arm crossroads as well. The protected cycle tracks go around the outside of such junctions.
So people cycling don’t have to mix with motor traffic. In every corner of the junction the signature protective traffic island simply emerges from this design. Cycling straight on is not very hard to figure out. Cyclist continue straight forward on their path alongside the carriageway for motor traffic.
The left turn is a bit more complicated: it is done in two stages. But Dutch traffic lights have more than just two green phases. Every direction gets green in turn and that makes clever timing possible. The second stage of the turn can therefore often be made right after the first.
While the left turn may be more complicated, the right turn is very easy. The junction design makes it possible to pass the lights without even noticing them. Whatever time you lost in a left turn you gain again in every right turn. The exact same design works on a t-junction as well.
Cycling through the top of the T means you can simply ride past traffic lights again, without stopping. Depending on the traffic volume the design even works without traffic lights. The most important feature of this design is the space where a car can wait for other traffic without being in the way.
So a driver can deal with other motor traffic first and then with people cycling. But junction design developed further. Roundabouts have proven to be much safer than traditional four-arm junctions. And they can have a cycle track all around them too, on which people cycling can have priority over motor traffic.
Such roundabouts are very easy to navigate if you are on a bicycle. They make traffic flow better and are safer for motor traffic, for people cycling and -because motor traffic goes slower- they are also better for the environment. Because of reduced noise and less exhaust fumes.
Here too, the space for a car to wait out-of-the-way of other traffic enhances the safety. And this design can also be used in a much more urban environment, like here in Amsterdam. If the roundabout is very large, it is best to bypass it altogether.
This roundabout in Houten has a separate level for motor traffic, and one for cycling. This type of infrastructure makes a junction very safe and very easy to pass. But there’s not always space for such a solution in the built-up area. Speeds at so-called Turbo-Roundabouts are usually so high,
That there really is no alternative, then to have cyclist bypass them in an underpass. Of course it is best if motor traffic is forced to go up an artificial incline, while people cycling can stay on ground level. Even when that is not possible and underpass can still be preferable.
In other locations it can be best to choose an overpass. It all depends on the specific situation. When it comes to junction design the Dutch have an array of possibilities -including cycling infrastructure- to create safer crossings. All of which are so easy a child can use them.

But a other large problem is that cyclist never give direction with there arms and most cyclist ignore red lights . So several cyclist are in collision with cars every day. At 3.39 less exhaust fumes is not true because you have to slow down and accelerate again. More fumes and noise.
In germany most cyclists still use the roads EVEN when there are seperate parts for them nexto the street. No joke, you see this everyday. The biggest problem here is not the infrastucture but the behavior of the people…
Good for cycling, but, having been to the Netherlands, I have found it not very good for pedestrians.
Pedestrians, and especially the elderly and disabled pedestrians are at a distinct disadvantage to the younger, fitter and healthier cyclists.
This needs much improvement!!
ik die tijdens rijlessen scheld om alle fietsers die door rood licht rijden, voorrang nemen of de fiets zo voor de auto gooien…
The "space for a car to wait" is great for one car, but what happens when there are multiple cars and a long line of cyclists to wait for? Cars will back up and clog the roadway.
This is what's possible in a country that does not have its own car industry.
Definitely a successful model for all States.
2:09 Utrecht Albert heijn!
In Victoria ( Australia) increasingly more bicycle paths are created, but at the expense of roads as the paths are painted on the vehicular road surfaces. Great for bikes, but car traffic congestion is the result; not a great outcome.
0:55 I live in that city!!
Kind kan de was doen
Thankfully we can afford cars in the USA. Maybe they will lower their 20% VAT and like 60% income tax so the average person can afford not riding a slow deathtrap.

Funny I see a roundabout at the end of my own street at 3:16. To bad you don't see me driving through
The first city in the clips, up until the Amsterdam and Houten examples is 's-Hertogenbosch. Not that anyone was asking, I just grew up there and wanted to share. They have one of, if not the best traffic light system in the world. Every lane is analysed and processed in such a way that waiting time is almost nihil. Including the cycle lanes.
This concept is so alien to us Indians!
I live in the Netherlands never thought it was that special
We're so god damn smart holy xD
Leuke video
If New Amsterdam(i.e.,New York City), and environs copied old Amsterdam, then you'd have a heaven sent traffic situation, plus a well run, transit system,(trolleys prevailing), and an integrated connection operation, and people friendly fare system. The use factor would sky rocket, and the traffic would fall in proportion! That's an ideal, but there's hope for the future! Thank you,for the simplicity of the approach, and the ideas presented 🎁l KISS,always wins out!! 🏆
ええやん、日本も導入してくれ
the Netherworld sure has a thing for bikes
Sure, cycle all you want in the flat Netherlands
I am watching this in 2021 from a central European country and it still feels like this was filmed in a far distant future on another planet. Yet it was filmed in 2014.
That is just sad…
The roundabouts that can be crossed by bike are amazing! In many countries it is difficult to ride a bicycle in the city center,
but in the Netherlands it seems more difficult to drive a car in the city center. Patient and good consideration for cyclists and pedestrians at crosswalks is wonderful.
watching in england like 🙁
I did not know that cycling path infrastructure in the Netherlands was so special. Cycling should be safe and easy to use everywhere.
Well germany, look at his! Thats how bike lanes should look!
I envy you guys
Gosh, I know about this video so late. But, fortunately, I now know about it.
This is 8 years old and still my homeland has none of it.
As a Dutch person living in Canada this is one of the main things I miss about the Netherlands. Bike trails and efficient road design, it really feels like they are not even trying here😂
infelizmente agora que na minha cidade eles estao se preocupando com a mobilidade urbana, admiro muito a atitude da holanda e de outros paises que se preocupam com estipo de mobilidade
This video being so old but still having so few views.🙃
Amazing!

0:36 that little kiddo is so cute!
raising kids with these bike lanes would be so great.
3:30 one small point – slower traffic is not better for the environment. slow speeds is where fuel efficiency is the worst.
these are so geometrically beautiful too. especially 4:05
Cyclists in America will drive ON the lane divider instead of IN the bicycle lane, and get mad at drivers, even though there is no obstacle or potholes in their bike lane.
They're an incredibly silly, arrogant, entitled bunch.
The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make cycling in the Netherlands seem like a breeze! 🌞 What's your favorite cycling memory
