big Merlier fan here, but I have to say – he f-ed up. only about 100/150m left. throwing a shoulder at Jasper caused him to stop pedaling on contact- it was over right then. should have stayed right and hit the gas.

No merlier tried to swing left of the BORA rider but philipsen was there. Then merlier left a gap between him and the BORA rider and philipsen took it. He didn't do anything wrong
Jasper has been dirty in the past but that was clearly not his fault. Merlier was leaning on him hard but Jasper straightened out and gapped him fair and square.

Would call it a pretty normal sprinting incident that's actually pretty well handled. It's more Merliers comments afterwards that make it controversial, but I'm assuming that's just the emotional response before he saw back the footage.

I don’t get why Merlier didn’t just stay in the draft of the bora rider. No idea why he was so determined to go on the inside of the bora rider who most likely and did closed off the inside anyways when He had the wheel to begin with
Not a Jasper fan, but the contact created by both of them was what let Jasper win. Merlier lost at least 3 pedal strokes and lost his rhythm making that contact, and it looks like he was even the one that initiated the contact. Better to have gone slightly right to the open space and let the front rider continue to block Jasper
