Cantilever break doesn’t sit all the way down into the hole… It’s a Shimano CX50 brake and a 1980s Miata bike. Is this OK? Or is this terrible and my brakes will self-destruct?

It looks like it’s not all the way on the stand-off, tap it with a rubber hammer, something on there is probably a little crooked.
And, lube the posts a bit.
This is normal on newer Shimano V or cantilever breaks (since 2008) on an older frame. It’s fine, the anchor makes good contact and that’s what matters. If you want a better fit, you’ll want to use a different brand but it’s just an aesthetic thing.
The other comments aren’t entirely wrong.. make sure you greased the post, take the caliper off and reseat. You know, check yourself with some basic common sense . But, the gap is normal and expected with this combo.
The pin does look a little off, it should still line up perpendicular but the gap is expected (to be clear).
On an aluminum or carbon frame you can actually change the posts to get rid of the gap but yours is permanently attached.
