I am curious what people think about 1:1 as their big big gear combo for steep climbs, especially on race days. Is this easy enough, or do you prefer even more? I understand this is subjective and terrain matters greatly, so perhaps share your level and own ride types. Thanks in advance for weighing in.

Not enough for me. I had 30:34 before, and 30:30 on the road wheels, and for road it was ok, but for gravel I would’ve preferred something even lower. Then I got a new bike with 40:42 and it wasn’t enough on longer steep climbs, I’m not that strong. I got a 46 cassette which is fine, but even with 40:46 I sometimes wish for something lower.
But I’m not racing, the one gravel race a year that I join is just a personal challenge to complete it, not to win or even finish in top 10.
I’m the wrong person to ask considering I’m 230# but I prefer a bit more gearing than 1:1. My Emonda has .97 final ratio and my Lynskey GR30 has a .8 final ratio. Given the complete different styles and the weight differences, they climb about equally in feel it seems.
