I recently accepted a job for the summer at a boat club that is about a 30 minute bike ride (according to google maps) from the closest town and I want to have a more affordable option to get around. I know absolutely nothing about bikes and would just like help with making my decision. I’ve been looking on facebook marketplace since I have a really small budget.

The top bike shown is 26inch Murray Westpoint beach cruiser that was originally purchased in a set- $40

The bottom bike is Murray Westpoint monterey – $60

These are just two that I messaged the sellers about but I am willing to spend more on a quality bike but as of right now this is just a summer position so I don’t want to blow a ton.

Please help and give advice on what I should do/other quality bike brands that are affordable!

  1. I wouldn’t want to spend 60 minutes a day on either of those.

Look into a used hybrid instead.

  2. How many hills are there on this commute? If it’s anything but perfectly flat you’re going to want something that with multiple gears or at least a single speed that doesn’t weigh a ton

If you like that style, and they fit you/feel good, and you don’t mind not going super fast, then cruisers are a very fun way to get around on flat ground. They have a similar geometry to dutch bikes and those folks ride them all over all the time.

Live life in the slow lane and enjoy every minute of it!
