I picked up a 1985 Schwinn frame from craiglist as a project to learn how to work on bikes and build up a tool library. The bike did not come with wheels, but I found a wheel and tire set on craigslist so I picked that up as well.
The frame originally was have been built around 27″ wheels with a 5 speed freewheel. I picked up a 700c wheel with a 7 speed freewheel. From what I can tell, shifting should be ok (will deal with that later).
Inside the dropouts is 126 mm. When the wheel is installed that is 130 mm.
All seems well except for the fact that the wheel does not seem centered in the frame. I have looked for spacers to move from the drive to non-drive side, but I can’t figure out how to take the hub apart. I have considered playing with the dish to move the hub to the left a touch, but that doesn’t seem like the right thing to do since the rim does seem centered on the hub.
So questions are:
1 – is this even a big deal? it looks pretty centered in the chainstays but seems a touch off center compared to the brake mounting point.
2 – if i dissamble the hub, should there be any spacers in there to move, or does it look like no?
2b – how can i disassmble the hub? i don’t see any obvious way to take it apart.
3 – would it be ok to try changing the dish slightly to center the rim on the frame? Or is that a bad idea?
Am trying to do this on the cheap but am not married to any of the parts.
