I found this pair of FSA Comet cranks in a dumpster, looked to be in surprisingly good condition so I took them. I don’t understand why somebody would toss a perfectly good pair of cranks that cost over $100 so I figured something must be wrong with it. But after looking it over there’s nothing my untrained eye could find. Now admittedly I know very little about cranks so before I used them I wanted to ask if there’s anything about these that would render them unusable? Pedal threads aren’t damaged, very little wear on the chainring teeth, what am I missing?

Maybe the non-drive side arm is stripped, or otherwise compromised? Or maybe one of the cranks is bent from a fall. Can’t really tell from the photo.
Drive side looks worn on the spindle. If you can feel grooves with your thumbnail where the bearing seats then it is toast.
I’m no expert either, but aren’t those teeth a bit too pointy? Of course you can still replace the chainring.
Great, now you have to build a whole bike around a dumpster find. Shame they didn’t leave the bb on
Probably the chainring is worn, and since the spider and ring are one piece they just tossed the crank. Lots of people probably think it can’t be replaced. Replacement rings are around $20.
HOWEVER if you can find a Wolf Tooth CAMO spider, you can use regular chainrings if you want something other than what FSA has. Good luck.
