    MTBer road bike rookie brake question

    I was given what i suspect to be a 1988 Cannondale that in my experience should have had 27” wheels. I put 700c’s on and some dura ace br-7402’s which i assumed would be too SHORT to reach the rim. Turns out there about 10cm too LONG. What the heck is going on here? Its a 58cm frame and the tires are right in the chainstay dimples, theres no way this is a 650b frame right? Same goes for the Sakae fork. Which looks exactly right sized for the 700c wheel. Are these long reach brakes? Do i need super short reach (if thats even a thing?)

      They’re* Also the photo is deceiving. The rear caliper is way too long for the wheel, it looks exactly the same as it does in the front

      Beats me. There are some 650c wheel Cannondales kicking around from when the smaller wheels were popular with triathletes. If the frame was for 650c wheels, I’d think you’d have trouble getting 700c wheels in at all.

      Do you have any pictures of the whole bike? The 650c wheel frames look out of proportion, with a long headtube.

      Looks like you’ve got a long reach caliper fitted, is it possible you’ve accidentally swapped front and rear?

      Usually only one is longer.

      A road frame of this vintage will usually be for at maximum 25c tires. Those look too fat for that frame. Those also look like long reach brakes on a frame built for short reach calipers. It will become more obvious when you put pads in them, but if you squeeze them in by hand and sight through the pad slots the pad bolt needs to center on the brake track. These look like they will miss long from the pics, but you need to check.

      Make sure you also get that bottom bracket fitted correctly, drive side all the way in tight first with grease on the threads
