Got a little bonus going on here, and some thing a little different. Coinciding with the release of our zine 5 and Nails in the Coffin on DVD, ex Uk Fit pro Marv (Nicholas Martin) who was a young 16 years of age and a fan of Nails in the Coffin when it came out back in the late 90s, he wanted to know a few things about it, so came in and asked me some behind the scenes questions about the goings on in and around the making and riding in the video.
Hello hello so we got something a little different going on this week we got a little bonus um to coincide with our release of uh bicycle Union Zen 5 with Nails in the coffin on DVD um we got Marv X UK fitpro who was a big fan of
Nails in the coffin when it came out originally on VHS and um wanted to sit down and ask me some questions about the going on behind the scenes so uh we’re doing a few things here that’ll be a little bit different um going to interview a few other people about
Videos they’ put out magazines contests just important things in the history of BMX so uh check this out and the first one is with yours Truly oh yeah you ready to run I can go when you are yeah so how how old were you that when that when that was in a coffin came out I don’t remember it coming out I think it came out in like end of 98
Right yeah so I would have been 16 okay but I was at um by 98 oh right so that kind of and then you know obviously there’s footage on that so come out later that year um all right so what made you want to make now was in
The coffin or the video or a video um I it wasn’t actually my idea so why you you need then so there’s a guy called Sun sha who lived in Oxford who made skate videos he filmed Tom Penny and stuff okay and he had a video camera he used to ride BMX
He’s basically a BMX guy but he he had a lot of ties to the skate scene I can’t remember I think we used to write to each other back and forward and he he said oh you should make a BMX video like a union BMX video because Union was
Quite like just gaining ground at that point in time so like we started I think filming in 97 I think it was 97 um and then Nick or Andy from Lord I also used to write letters to and they used to write letters back and forth and they
Said the same thing like you should make a video and it was that that was I was like ah maybe maybe maybe we should so I think the Lord guys had mentioned it first and then one son ill mentioned it and he was a video videographer I was
Like oh maybe we should do this so we kind of like batted back and forward and he’s like okay we we’ll make a video I didn’t have a camera yeah I was going to say did you didn’t have one no I didn’t have a camera at all so he came with us
To film a few times to get the ball rolling cuz he had a camera and where did he go where did you go we where were you riding the first I can’t remember where we went first but the first one that I remember was uh we went to Ashford with Bennett Shawn
Butler Josh Stricker um probably a couple of other Americans because they was over for the backyard jamp that year yeah so that was kind of the beginning of so that was and I remember him saying I think I’ve got four parts of like five different people like in one
Day because those guys obviously like were doing everything never seen and it was like yeah that was it like [ __ ] I’ve got like a a Bennett Butler and Josh rck apart all all wrapped up in one yeah so that that was the first one that I remember
So what was the what was the State of Union at that point like were you were you making anything or yeah yeah advertised it had like a bit of a a momentum going like had quite a strong presence with making just printed T-shirts yeah printed T-shirts and we
Advertising half paging ride okay maybe we had some caps as well coming or we had like little bits and pieces and stickers and stuff and we was just kind of like it it was a bit of a thing you know like we had a presence and it was
People kind of gravitated towards it and it was it was one of the companies that was like coming up really yeah cuz I guess it was it felt like there’s a bit of difference between what you were doing and the sort of freestyle scene you were sort of
Coming out of like you know you weren’t like you know you were like different to that weren’t you everyone but was that did you have like a you know a team like what was the team well it was like it was a crew it was a crew at first but like then it
Officially became a team was like was like Jerry Stewart and me we was in the ads so that was like the first three people to be the team and at the time like like you say other there was like ugp poor boy there was like there was like BMX
Sort of core Brands clothing brands but they they was a bit sort of fluffy if you know what I mean they weren’t that wasn’t like was gr me yeah they we was into the [ __ ] whole different [ __ ] yeah okay um so it started at like you know after
Backyard what time when did you stop filming it or when when did what was the the filming duration yeah yeah it come out in 98 it well it must have started in 96 maybe it was backyard 96 then because I feel like we filmed for two
Years I don’t think so no no well well maybe uh well Bennett was over he won 96 didn’t he 96 yeah so it would have been that would have been it then when we started was he on a yellow bike yeah yeah that was it yeah okay
Yeah so it was 96 okay that Mak think there’s only like one or two clips is there yeah he he hopefully that Clips in there he 36 a set one way and then 360 another the other way that being like it’s in Thunder INE that’s a blunder it that was
The day that was the same day yeah yeah cuz they CU they yeah and that was like mindblowing I remember like being like what the [ __ ] he could 360 have jumped the wrong way like completely like a one off people people can’t do that [Laughter]
[ __ ] um so did you set out with a plan of how you wanted it to be like did you think St have a section I a section um Adam have a section Martin did you did you to see all those five people not really section you just no we
Just filmed yeah and then it we obviously we knew Jerry and Sh would have a part yeah because of how good they were but we I wanted I watched a lot of skateb videos when I was sort of late te early 20s like vert skating and like just skate videos were like
Everything all skating and they used to from what I remember do it like Parts mixed Parts mixed Parts mixed that’s how that I think that’s how we got into that bit and soil also he filmed skateboarding so he had that Vibe as well okay so we did yeah we just filmed
And I remember just like I’m sure we filmed for two years and there about like a year in and it was we kind of had figured out like what’s going to happen and Martin and Adam we just had enough footage of those guys to put them in so
That’s We R all the time so yeah and those two were were kind of excelling at that point as well so yeah so did SEL give you a camera then or did he at all I um did you buy one I bought a camera
Off of a guy who Adam used to know who was just known as the dodgy Gees I don’t even know his name excellent and I remember Adam being like he’s got he’s got a video camera do you want it and I was like how
Much you want for it he goes I think he said 60 or 50 Quid I can’t remember what it was 60 or 50 Quid and he’s got a lens as well well I was like yeah man I’ll have it didn’t even never had a camera before didn’t know how they worked or anything
So I was like Yeah man so that was what most of that was filmed on was that 50 Quid camera Jesus yeah what did sun make of it um like that do yeah yeah like at that point in time it was like oh it’s just a video camera we can film with it
So yeah he had a better camera obviously but okay you can tell like the clips that have been filmed with a by me and the clips have been filmed by him they’re way clearer on his camera okay um so where where were you where was everyone living were you all everyone
Liv in did you live together or no no so Adam lived in Hillingdon which is near Oxbridge which is the house that you see that’s Adam’s house that’s Adam lived with two other guys who weren’t BMXs and their house just got taken over by Riders because that was the meeting
Point everyone would come from like each point in the suburbs and in London would all go to hillington but which is out far out west yeah and we’d meet at Adams cuz that was the point where everyone drove or got the train to and then we’d
Get in people’s cars or do whatever we was doing and there was also Hillingdon Trails were near there hairfield Trails were near there was near there Harrow skate park was close like and a lot of the other Riders live near there yeah so of all the five people where did where
Did you live I lived in wol from Abbey which was near Cyclone which was out that way okay cool you living up there yeah what about Jerry Jerry lived in high Wickam which is like further west um Stuart lived in radlet Martin lived in pin and Adam
Lived in Hillingdon okay that was the main yeah LM he used to come out of us quite a bit and he lived in dlon yeah yeah yeah because you there was quite a lot of travel you know you’re watching the video there’s like Liverpool Bristol like the
Trails like there’s a lot there’s a lot of different places that you were going to in the just in the UK like how were you all getting around yeah like Adam and Stuart or Adam and Martin or like people and some of them Trails like P Hillingdon hairfield they were next to
Each other okay they were like four within four miles of each other them three sets of Trials Andy um and how many times did you go to the east coast I can’t remember I went for that video Once just once yeah that was one
Time that I went to East Coast I used to go to the east coast every year for a bit but the all the stuff you see on there was when me and Stuart King went in in a September of I think 97 okay yeah and that was yeah I filmed a lot
And I went there how long were you there for two weeks I think K Out who who you staying with was they just like ster Sandy and sou they all live together yeah yeah be amazing what was everyone riding a king was everyone having a king then um I’m
Trying to think of yeah I think pretty much everyone had a king frame yeah and power lights how did did that come about naturally or was like P power lights I got power lights first because I saw Castillo yeah riding with power light bars and I thought they look [ __ ] cool as [ __ ]
And then I saw Colin win on yeah yeah lights out lights out and he had power bars and I was like these bars look [ __ ] badass man but Rob noly had them as well didn’t he yeah but he didn’t they didn’t look that he had cut they
Massive and like real far forward those guys out like cut and like pull back and I don’t know yeah I didn’t I wer tuning into as much to Rob noly as I was to like Castillo man and that was why I got them and then like I think other people just
Like had the same thing oh those B look pretty [ __ ] cool like they got them yeah cuz they don’t make sense for riding really they’re too small like yeah think everyone does turndowns in that in that video who’s riding power lights all do turn downs and they’re like good for bar SPS
But they just they’re right for turn Downs aren’t they hard to get your legs in there like bear in mind everyone had flipped stems as well I mean people could do them on it so obviously worked but like looking back at it now it seems weird yeah but yeah that’s where that
Came from and I think I only had them for I wouldn’t even say a year I’d say less than a year but I never understood where everyone got them from because it’s not like you could buy them yeah you could buy them separate yeah could you yeah yeah all right I always thought
They like complete bikes no the ones they come on complete bikes but the ones on complete bikes were really [ __ ] how were they and the the aftermarkets were really good I think they made them like two years before or something as an aftermarket bar and all the ones that people bought
Were from like two years previous oh okay because they didn’t take off until 97 and then suddenly everyone wanted power lights because we used to sell them in Cyclone oh right and they were like yeah the ones on the bikes people thought they could use them and they’ always bend them
Okay anyone breaking mine broke must the [ __ ] on no where did yours break like around the bottom like you know where your stem goes in and then the junction yeah like just just on the the down bit there they cracked oh okay but [ __ ] knows yeah as far as I don’t know why
I’ve got bit of info but I think that the cheap bik ones were seed they were SE tubing okay instead of like draw I don’t know what that means okay so I think it’s rolled around and like worlded okay um so the music is obviously pretty pretty
Wicked um who chose that that was yeah all of it so I chose all all of that music minus two songs and one of them songs was slapshot because Jerry chose it and the other one was the outro which son chose because he just like that sort
Of chill chill tune that they used to outro oh what it’s like this they play that before Chelsea games don’t they they yeah but people thought that like I’d picked Jerry’s Music as a joke because of what the song theme was well yeah that always like he specifically said you know you
Know that that one song like he’s like yeah yeah I think I’ll have some that which was like was surprising because I thought he was going to pick some sort of dub track or something you know yeah yeah but I was like [ __ ] yeah he’s [ __ ] picking that
Song and then like people were like what this is obviously a joke but it wasn’t pick that song yeah that’s like one of the main things I really remember when I was like watching it when I was like 16 17 I was like I didn’t even know
What straight Ed was I knew that I knew that track was sick and then when I found out I was like aren’t these guys like smoking other of weed like Jerry like especially but yeah I mean it’s [ __ ] like Monumental it’s like that’s an authorative part and that’s an
Authorative song it’s like it does it works perfectly yeah yeah but that like that tun he has on Um backyard vid yeah yeah also amazing man so good that’s pretty authorative as well like she he’s going on about like Margaret fer hilarious man that’s what I thought he was gonna pick something like that I was like well he’s gonna [ __ ] choose some yeah yeah
Probably not going to fit with the rest of the video but um so what did you go on like trip did you have any support from like mags or brand to help like was there any like did you were you going on trips like CU I thought some of it
Looked like you know those clips of Mozza in Liverpool I thought is this a 70s trip that that you’re just on yeah or or there some stuff of like John Taylor in like Wakefield and I’m like is John just there or is is that like we
Was just we used to go up there we we would go to like ride skate parks [ __ ] 300 miles away at like 3 in the afternoon on Sunday you know get there at 5: or whatever and ride and then just come back at like
Leave at 10: and get back at 1 like it was [ __ ] pretty crazy when you think about it now do that to Bristol as well because they always owned them late yeah that one I went on a few I jumped in the van to go with 70s guys on a few different
Excursions and we also well it wasn’t they weren’t official but like Gro bags had the ride down oh yeah what was it called rat one so and he always used to bag on us for like we would be like [ __ ] ride [ __ ] [ __ ] this [ __ ] just like ripping into
Everything about that all jump in his van on his on the right expenses get a load of footage tune pretty quick but no because he still saying that same [ __ ] and he’ be like [ __ ] yeah yeah ride paid for this trip you know like it was pretty [ __ ] funny when you think
About it that that van almost was like just a freebie to go wherever the [ __ ] he wanted because he was our mate and we we rod with him and he yeah he took us [ __ ] all over how come there’s no footage of gr bags because at that point in time I was
Like totally up my own ass with like like no this is not gonna have any [ __ ] like any race sort of pro like Pro wannabe like uniform guys and [ __ ] like yeah being a dick really so he just got admitted from it oh um and yeah yeah that’s pretty pretty lame like
Looking back on it now like I think [ __ ] hell it’s just your mate like Get over the [ __ ] over it used to ride with us all the time and we take us everywhere and we we just cropped him out because he didn’t fit the mold you
Know oh wa like for you know we could have put like a few Clips in was he killing it he was riding with us and he was riding good he was like he was same standard like were you there no I wasn’t there that would have been at the time
When I was like [ __ ] video they well that 360 like so he was the last one out of everyone to learn to 360 a set of doubles really yeah which is pretty [ __ ] funny looking at that yeah and we used to bag on him hard like like crush him you know like
[ __ ] because he’ roll so he was all a pin every one of us could just [ __ ] spin like that like said like no problem you know real rub his nose in it and uh we were always used to come on Ro bags come like [ __ ] egg him on he’d come
Down he’ come around the top section like over over the jump over the roller and then he’d go hit the brakes and like roll his bike up the lip and like look at the landing and we would just be like [ __ ] hell St King like would just rip
Him so hard and then one time we got him to do it and he he like did this like the stiffest like spin like bolt up right and he landed like sprock it on the landing perfect bike stayed upright like that and he stepped off and walk down the land and just
Like and then got you got it figured out after that though but yeah he got he got [ __ ] hammering but then Le you know he mastered it so what was what was the what was your rout what was your routine like what was your lifestyle like were you working was everyone
Working I was working at Cyclone so I was I was working in cyclon BMX store back then um Stuart I don’t know what he was up to Adam was working at a stereo shop in Harrow Ro bags was working for ride um Martin was probably working for his family’s bus
Company Jerry I think was working out in like um flower wholesaler I think in like near hillington near where Adam lived so okay and so did you just pick like you know we’re going to go Bristol this weekend we’re going to go Whitefield or Liverpool like how how did
No it was pretty random like just get to hington be like BOS we where should we go like what’s how late has it got before we decide to go somewhere so if it was real late we’ go Bristol because it was open until late okay and if it
Was like not too like if we was out of the house by three we we dve a hole or something you know like we went there a few times like ridiculous time but I suppose you could probably get to like ox pretty quick from hington probably be
Like an hour and a bit would it well you went to like there’s that you know Alex does that son film that he’s from Oxford okay yeah so you you did you ever go there did anyone go there not to Oxford no okay I thought I might be quite
Like on like on your radar because it was like loads of mini RS on it was that not there yet that was gone what the that was gone so the first incarnation of o was like the midi sort of like the 8 foot and the spine and then there was
Like a sort of mini ramp at the side but then the next section I don’t think had been built yet which was the one with a vert ramp and the yeah yeah and the quarter built into the back of it yeah yeah that wasn’t there yet I don’t
Okay and did you go to um Leon C much was that still around then no we kind we we went there a few times but we was sort of done with I think by that point is is Leon seeing it I think I can’t I think may maybe but I never went there
So I thought that was it but I don’t know maybe of like some else oh yeah Martin’s at Leon c as well yeah maybe ice pick grind I think yeah yeah there’s definitely some Leon C in it um but yeah we was kind of we we’d
Already we’ve done Leon C by that point that was like 95 96 really yeah like you were you were living there then like there’s so much footage in like what’s it called yeah yeah well that’s yeah that’s where we used to get filmed almost every year Well three two or three
Years so when the vid was like done you know ready to come out did you like advertise that it was going to come out or did it was just like Cyclone be like all right yeah we got loads of videos it was we had some we definitely put some
Adverts in saying there’s a we just calling it a video nasty coming soon so I’ve definitely got some ads in some digs and maybe some rides as well saying that like there’s a video coming so that had a bit of a buzz to it as well yeah
And how how like how many did you get made and did you sell them like assume they’re probably all sold by sold good 7 DED it I’m guessing but there was more than a thousand [ __ ] hell cuz I remember the first run was like 500 and then I
Think we got another 500 and then we might have had a top up after that did you have to get them done did you send any to America or anything I sent I sent some to ster and those guys and I sent one to us ride and never heard anything
Back never got R reviewed or anything just like nothing didn’t even send me like cheers for the video or anything just like did it get review no it didn’t mention did he get reviewed in UK ride in he got reviewed in UK ride and it was pretty funny because I read
It the other day so it got reviewed in UK ride and we were [ __ ] livid like we were like what the [ __ ] this like we well I was anyway like but it wasn’t really that bad of a review when I read it the other day and I remember
Like Rob Ridge reviewed it and I was like I wrote him this letter I was like [ __ ] like like scaving letter about his review and then he wrote back to me like what was [ __ ] it and sort of batted his corner and then I wrote back to him
And it was like we had some [ __ ] back and forth via Royal M like and I was getting into it he he was coming back at me like and it was completely uncalled for like the review was was fine and if you didn’t think it was because we were
Like we I don’t know what was going on but we we kind of made that video and thought yeah this is like we was proud of that video like this is a [ __ ] this is a ground the ground Mark of a video I thought even when it came out
Thought this is like marks another period of time like so you had the backyard vids yeah and then like from there like now was in the coffin was another change I I believe um and we it wasn’t like written like that in the the review so we I blew up
Here so there’s quite a lot of you know the vids of that era were pretty good I think I guess you know that’s when I first started riding so I was kind of like you know watched the on repeat constantly but how do you think it sets
In because there’s like Anthem came out you know end of 97 early 98 then soil and thunder domination um I can’t think of any others but there’s obviously some more but how do you think it sits with them like do you think it you know um bit tricky question but like no I
Think like looking back at them now like when Anthem came out I thought it was it was real good but I didn’t think it’s as good as what I think is now you think it’s better now yeah yeah yeah than when I saw I saw it and I was like [ __ ]
Pretty [ __ ] sweet but I didn’t it didn’t have that much impact like I thought it was amazing but it didn’t yeah and then Thunder was just was was f a fun video and I thought it was cool but the same same with thunder domination I’m not really that familiar with even though
I’ve probably watched it a loot of times it was a good video but it kind of blended into a lot of the other stuff that was going on that time but there was an fbm video which come out maybe 97 and it was called live fast die oh yeah and that
Was the one that I watched and was like well this is it like this is this is the one yeah it was I think it was 15 minutes long I remember that one I was like that’s [ __ ] badass that one they’re pretty they’re pretty similar you
Know see where where some of the the stuff’s come from but like that was one of it just hit so hard and fast and was gone like and he was like [ __ ] I got watch it again yeah yeah I feel you on that what about compared to I guess you
Kind of already touched on it but like compared to like 7s videos because like word probably came out like you know probably fairly similar time maybe like six months before was word afterward word was like really mellow though was it yeah it was like quite
Umly was it yeah and so for me that was like too slow yeah yeah yeah see I preferred the ones before yeah the last result and yeah on location and they had like a lot more energy and word was just like it seemed to just slum a bit like
Like I wasn’t really yeah I didn’t really feel that one that much so I thought that that as was like completely different yeah he was pretty like raw isn’t it like you know there’s no [ __ ] like get you know hard hitting isn’t it like when it was coming
Together Pro you know probably fairly you know over halfway through probably realized that you know Jerry Jerry’s probably like best in the world at this at this point really isn’t he and Stuart’s probably like they were both to me they were both like different styles
But both neck and neck yeah like did you think we’ve got a you know or maybe like when you first first started think like filming it you must have thought I need to document these two and get it out because Jerry was like mental wasn’t he like it was you
Know like did you do you think they were like World beaten good cuz I kind like you think like watching interviews later with like Joe rich or like his props interview he’s like you know people [ __ ] worship Jo and he’s like I like Jerry G yeah he’s
Like me and coxy got a show where he’s like he’s he’s your favorite Rider’s favorite Rider Jerry G’s like the master isn’t he but like I guess you you know seeing that on every day was it like kind of mental or like normaliz well it was different because I knew Jerry from
The 80s yeah so like the The First Time I Ever Saw Jerry was at a Petersfield BFA contest and he couldn’t land on like he landed so heavy and it became a bit of like a bit of a thing in our group like [ __ ] Jerry G like just lands on the flat like
He would go up like high but just and he he landed so hard and from then like I’d see him again and again and again and then he suddenly he dialed it all in and he could [ __ ] land like pin accurate at the top so I’d seen him ride and
Progress for a long time so by 96 or whatever like we we Roe we used to go to bror ride with him in the early 90s so by 96 when we was filming it was kind of like I knew that he was really good anyway but seen him become like that
Good yeah through that many years I think I met him in 88 and then cross paths like many times up until like the early ’90s when we used to start riding with him a lot more so I’d see yeah and Stuart was like a little kid at Harrow when I first met
Him who I just watched like learn every trick like better than anyone else so I knew that he was really good as well because he was he was going to the US and like competing with like main dud like yeah I feel like Stuart like that
That part was like the Pinnacle for him really wasn’t it I didn’t he kind of like I didn’t really see a huge amount of him after that really there was bits Bobs but like he was like amazing then but that was he he R like that like on a normal day of
Riding he wasn’t trying to ride for a video like yeah he just went out and he [ __ ] killed it like and just did whatever he liked and if he [ __ ] he just [ __ ] and that was it like yeah he was amazing yeah we saying like Jerry didn’t
Like the video either they were just they were just riding so okay cuz after after that Jerry was like around for you know he probably should have won that king of concrete shouldn’t he in like 98 and then he was like all over he was like yeah Urban games covers and yeah
Yeah he blew up yeah good timing like good timing um speaking of crashing what happened to um what’s his name’s face when he’s like Adam yeah so that was his come that was his comeb back ride he did that to his face so Adam broke his face like literally
Split his face into [ __ ] like where few months before that in Hayes he was I wasn’t there he was going up there was like an elbow and there was a like a wall behind it like a quart pipe you know like a hip there’s a wall behind it
But the wall was like 4 and 12T or something you know like like plywood height so you had to kind of cut it tight to get on it he was doing that and he went one time he went up to do it his front wheel didn’t go on the ramp and he
Headbutted the cop in [ __ ] and it split his like people were there would just like tell me it was like something [ __ ] out of a horror film he split his his head like in the like right down the middle and he said that the pallet
Of his mouth he could move with his two thumbs and his tooth come out ho his bottom tooth come out hard where split his jaw in two Jesus so he had all his titanium PL we went to see him in hospital and you couldn’t recogn his face was like this
Big it was [ __ ] like a mellow like and you could only recognize the the hairline like at the top it was [ __ ] awful man so anyway like that went on like obviously [ __ ] recovered and we went to um place in Wales Newport we went to Newport skate park we went with a
I think we went with the 70s guys and there was a little speed bum made out of wood so this is the first time back on his bike gets on his bike rides into the skate park rides over the speed bump too fast flips over the bars lands on his
Face and that was that was next day I think like oh my God that’s [ __ ] Grim [ __ ] up like put him off anyone else have any bad bad injuries or crashes like I mean there’s obviously a few in there but no not nothing like nothing to that degrade up remember
What that’s [ __ ] horendous yeah that was Grim man so I got a couple of like just random questions from the video like why was Robo picking on boily don’t even know like I couldn’t even answer that were you there yeah yeah that was me filming how did you why
Were you filming it if you didn’t know I don’t know I was just filming everything like yeah okay I just had the camera out all all the time that was like after B 98 okay well on that on the trip after that yeah okay yeah that was the same
Day as you know Bo’s yelling at that snake border at the end I can never work out what that is is that a skate and ride or yeah yeah why is he shouting at him he drunk I don’t know I don’t think he’d ever seen uh a
Snake border before and he just could believe how like how lame it was GP out [Laughter] dude um oh so who so where did you where did you edit it and um we went to Alan glass’s house which was in Brighton and S knew him from skating and he did a skate
Video made called viewfinder okay and he was the only person we knew who had editing software and I went there for a week maybe and soil stayed for a bit longer so yeah we we just edited the video every day and I I think Alan used to get up and go to
Work and me and SEL would be editing the video on his computer we we didn’t [ __ ] know that was like pretty I didn’t even own a computer at that point in time I don’t know even though pretty like you know that was early days yeah come byy I basically used I couldn’t do
It so knew how to work it and he I would just say put this there put that there what you think of this would you you know like we kind of just vaguely thrashed out of all right yeah we’re good then and I think i’ came back and
He’ stayed up there another five days or something what son yeah nice um there’s a clip of you in there doing a tail whip at skate and ride that okay why why is that the wrong way around good that is a perfect lineup for the software he’s like yeah yeah we you seen
What you can do with this software you can just like for instance this clip here you can flip it round so he flipped it around I was like oh yeah cool never turned it back and because I’d come back you gone he didn’t know yeah excellent so yeah it just ended up staying
There um the intro to your section the argu was it a copper you arguing with yeah just tell me everything about that cuz right every time I see that it makes me laugh it’s like I feel like that kind of sums you up quite a lot if i’ known you
The time I feel like that’s kind of what you probably would have been like to any figure of authority at the time so we’ve bear in mind we’ve been riding through London for [ __ ] 10 years you know and any time we we would go through the city
To South Bank or out the other side or wherever we were going if you saw a cop they would stop you they be like come here give you a [ __ ] what’s going on here what’s this what’s that what’s your name like we just like [ __ ] [ __ ] off
Like just R thinking you’re nicking it just they would just stop you and just give you a Shakedown for nothing you know all right and it was just like [ __ ] it just yeah it just wears on you you know you see them and you’re like know what’s coming next so that was
Like yeah 10 years after the fact or whatever but at this point I’m waiting Li sit let’s go McDonald’s I need to use the toilet so we that’s what I was waiting for where are you Liverpool Street okay it’s at McDonald’s at Liverpool Street Corner so lmip goes in the toilet like
We’re riding we’re filming a couple of the clips that made it in the video it’s just a random week night and I’m waiting outside got a camera in my hand my bike is lying on the floor and I’m standing up that what I what I was getting to me
You know about this bit and I saw that that cop come around the corner and I was like he’s going to come over to me and tell and tell me something you know so I turned the camera on it had a bit of blue tack over the red light so you
Couldn’t see it was on and I’m just holding my camera by my chest like and that was it he just come over and I was like man [ __ ] sake like and I was like literally not even like that might not have even been my bike for all he knew
You know it was like on the floor like laying down and that’s why yeah that that’s how that came about I was just like no you’re not I’m not I’m not having this like so what happened then did he just do yeah he just walked up he
Could he was like could he lost he wasn’t getting anywh to me he lost he’s like what you do man like I’m not like reform me for what yeah talking he he basically should have just carried on walking and not said anything because there was nothing there was nothing for him to do
That um why doesn’t why does everyone else have a name other than uh Adam and they in everyone’s got like stew King Jerry G John Dy Martin or me what he’s not got Adam Peters he’s just got Adam I’ve never even noed you’re not allowed a surname I didn’t even know probably
Probably s didn’t know [Laughter] surname uh there’s a clip of someone doing like a quarter to quarter transfer at Play PlayStation and they got it says go go Gunners is the L is that a football reference yeah because you got AR to on all right
Sweet um so I was asking I asked ree if he had any questions for you and he asked if uh where’s he got how many times if any did Adam peters’s front Peg touch the skating ride spine coping I think all Hees like just full
On ice picks is it there’s no 5050 I thought you meant he was [ __ ] the ice piig up watching the peg on it um what else have I got are you still like do you still see like ever on yeah yeah pretty much I haven’t seen Jerry for a while but like everyone
Else um still see yeah yeah yeah where’s Jerry then um he’s he’s in high Wickam but I don’t know I don’t know what he’s up to he’s just lying low you know fair dude yeah everyone else I see quite regular really uh so where was all the
Like there’s all the weird [ __ ] in the intro like the whole video intro like the mullets and the like the there’s like a skull car driving around and all where is all that [ __ ] from that was um I can’t remember the exact name of it but it was like a tour that they
Did with like you know big robot cars so Ali whittam was one of the guys in that stunt team there was a guy gets fired out of the cannon yeah yeah like he was working for those guys so that was like a like a sort of redneck like FB
Yeah we’ve got to go like yeah we went to see it in um somewhere near chz like like out that way Ry house maybe like and it was it was just like a full on like just full redneck show and a lot of that stuff was filmed there and then
Like once we’d seen that we was like we got to get more of this stuff lovely your together and the fighting and the all the like yeah what were those little kids them kids were arbridge mini ramp when we were filming there one day but
That was just like a normal s of a normal par where kids had fights um and the fire was opposite PlayStation you know there like house on fire oh yeah yeah that was that was one of the houses opposite PlayStation [ __ ] Hell I think I’ve got I think that’s pretty much all my questions done um have you got anything else you want to talk about or that I’ve gotten to ask I can’t think of much that You’ forgotten I just I remember like when I went to America and I I went to
America and gave those guys a video I didn’t actually send it I went there in December and they watched it and that that bit with a cop they were just like you can’t talk to Cops like that you you could never do that in the US oh
Just like they were [ __ ] maze that like I was just going at that cop like yeah that that was I went over there for a Chena thing where I launched the fbm Angela death frame and they showed the little devil SE and Destroy okay yeah the the premere yeah yeah CU I
Feel like that was kind of quite that’s quite similar to yeah yeah like live fast die Seek and Destroy like quite a steady transition there yeah yeah but yeah that that’s probably I can’t think of much else that like a dul that would uh did you make like on
So you you sold a th000 copies is did you did you make a bit of D to like did you I mean I don’t really care what you did did you like put stuff for Union I can’t even remember like that that kind of launched launched us to The Next Step really that
Video it was like established you know like so yeah a lot came from that just just being not just like having the spotlight really like and then more people knew and that was one of the that was probably like well that was the big UK video that year I’d say so that
Really helped the company but I can’t remember like oh made all this money because like a lot of that money went through Cyclone or s is or like I can’t remember how it worked out yeah but it was like it was tied in with other
Things so you never saw like oh [ __ ] L made this money there’s never suddenly like a few grand in your pocket is a yeah so it was just like yeah that didn’t even register something where did it go after then CU like I remember you know when you started making gloves and
Stuff I mean this was a bit later on but like I feel like it had you must have had more reach by this point like you know going to the States and stuff there was like you know people like Taj and stoffer and yeah um I can’t remember who
Else but there was a few like us heads that were like yeah so stuer from staying at his and then he came to the UK he was like the first real like us guy that we had and then Sandy was like on the back of him as
Well like like almost straight away as well so that that really helped and then I met like Joe and T on that same trip they were living there so that yeah it was it just Shone the spotlight on us and we we was a thing then instead of
Being like a half page like add in ride that people some people knew what it was and were into it it became more people knew what it was and was like all right we we kind of recognize this thing as being something now yeah yeah I mean I I
Didn’t really know very much when I was a you know when you first you don’t know anything year but I remember seeing a few ads in ride I’m like these are just like cryptic ads aren’t they yeah like some of them are like you know ice
Hockey players like slap I don’t I don’t even know what this is like I I mean obviously like but then you want to like to to me it’s like I’m into BMX enough to to pick up this magazine and I’m going to study this magazine so if I see something that
Looks like I should know what it is then I’m going to have to find out about it yeah like a lot of the people that I rode with on I first start of riding they were like like had power lights yeah and like you know I mean we weren’t obviously
Like very good at riding but they were like you got to learn Ice Pick ice pick STS on the quarter and like slam them in and like [ __ ] like that you know what I mean you’ve got to like you’ve got to do it you’ve got to do stuff like that
Learning like tabletops and stuff but they did and I was like yeah this is yeah they had like and a sort of a structure to what what we was doing how how we thought it should be presented but that’s just how we wrote really it wasn’t like oh yeah of course we just
Picked things that we like other people were doing and just kind of push them in a direction that we thought they should go so yeah like slamming an ice picking I’ve never even thought about that yeah like I remember we do like big asss to Peg grind and yeah but yeah tables and
Yeah just I mean that’s yeah I think there’s still good tricks like tables and 360s and stuff yeah but yeah that that was the the angle we was getting out we weren’t trying to hop about on pegs and like do bounce tricks and stuff like that so definitely it’s good that you
Said that because it’s like it worked you know yeah like to put something it was influential really like you know you guys are probably like what somewh like probably like 22 to 27 age yeah I was 25 and I remember thinking this is the only video part I I’m too old
Now but that’s when you’re most killing it isn’t it like really I think like and then like you don’t realize that you know someone some little [ __ ] muncher like me like over 10 like 10 years younger than you in like a small town like [ __ ] hell these guys are taking
It in yeah like you know you’re like that AR you’re like [ __ ] no this is amazing but like you’re just you know you’re just doing it aren’t you and it is it I guess it was pretty influential like you know a lot of people that I
Wrote with later on like they all have power lights everyone had power lights and you know everyone was influenced by it in some way I think I found it I found it pretty influential like even the tunes I listen to like going down to Liverpool by The
Bangles quite a lot now and I listen you know I never I never really listen I didn’t really understand it at the time like I didn’t really understand what snapshot was I knew that tune was [ __ ] sick but like some of the other a [ __ ] hilarious man like put them on
At work like [ __ ] New York and [ __ ] is like hilarious man like I feel like that’s maybe it’s CU I was pretty you know influenceable at that time you know when you’re young yeah it’s like you just hit with it and you’re like oh this
Is like sick yeah but yeah it was sick yeah like you say we we weren’t doing it for like are we going to influence a bunch of young kids we were doing it because we was like in that scene and we wanted to put out what we were doing and
What we thought BMX should be like like we thought it should be like raw core and like just gnarly like yeah like no one no one’s going pro off that video are they no no one’s getting like hooked up or deals off that like if anyone one
Was trying probably not even Jerry yeah like exactly like best best Rider in world doesn’t get anything it’s quite mental really isn’t it like get like like part sponsorship deal well maybe he did I don’t know no no you’re right yeah he was he wrote for 70s for a bit sort
Of yeah but that that was it like he didn’t yeah he didn’t he didn’t care maybe he didn’t want it I don’t know might have said no but whatever but but yeah and Stuart and that was another thing Stuart had a a bik company so yeah it was almost like didn’t need
Any of thanks yeah no problem yeah interesting because like yeah years later that if a video like that came out and they like them two parts had that much impact people would have definitely got snapped up would you yeah same as like when voices came out you know because to
Me voices another one of them videos where there’s another level now so like so you got 70s videos backyard ones and then like Nows in the coffin and then probably the next one is voices where like people were like stopped and looked and was like oh this is changed again
And it’s been rearranged by some new kids and they’re they’re presenting like what what they think it should be like and the same the same things happen don’t it’s just down another Circle yeah before like but if you went back I don’t know what like you wouldn’t have had one
Before that 70s was well they weren’t really like independent videos were kind of like no no one had the gear did they no yeah so it’s a bit like you know you got to be like sort of with a with a brand or like you know 70s obviously had stuff because they had
Some do like a little bit of do but the early ones like like 70s if you think late 90s but like 70s like 93 94 they they were just getting a guy called Mark Richards to film for them that that was it that’s how them videos came about
Yeah and it’s the same thing even though like they later on became like 7 is they still was the only people that were making that like regular like a regular video that came out every it was one a year yeah yeah that’s what I was
Yeah and it was yeah but then so then like voices wasn’t a company but it was still it still had that that solid like you know like that stamp of kids now [ __ ] looking at this and you like you say like there’s going to be there’s kids that are watching that and been
Like yeah voices that was the one that sort of made it for me you know yeah probably all right sweet good anything else you want to discuss no I think that’s I think that’s it can’t think of any or F I can’t think of too much I don’t know how going down to
Liverpool actually ended up in that video yeah did you pick that yeah yeah I’ll pick that yeah I don’t really like any of their tunes on that but and that Cura song yeah which was a cover that worked as well and the yeah the who who did I can’t even remember who did
Um what’s it called Stuart section hard skin oh is it yeah so that was their first record that I don’t think that record had been out long at that point yeah I didn’t even know what like get your boat race out of here meant I was like what does that
Mean [ __ ] well good all right that was that was a good good opening song Same Again with with like that that song on that part it was just like [ __ ] perfect you know yeah yeah it worked pretty well yeah not that he’s probably that song yeah it’s good but yeah man
That’s off hand I can’t think of too much else I could tell you does robo the other people did you think he used to that again yeah did he was he mean yeah well no just like he was just friendly like bashful friendly guy wasn’t it all right sweet it was
Only like yeah it was only it was all in good fun thing oh good that’s nice yeah was someone else was asking that like what’s up with Rob about don’t reckon would be doing that now would he think really nice now hello right so we’ve just got a patreon page we’ve been
Doing this show for nearly 2 years and it’s it well it will remain free and it has always been free but if you want to become a supporter or send something our way go to our patreon page I think there’s four tiers there’s a lot of

Nice one John that was well good, for me the best time in BMX
Moving house at the minute and found an original copy of Don't break the Oath on VHS. I'm sure i got this too somewhere.. When you gonna get the Grotbags Paul Roberts on a podcast? I'd like to see that one happen.
Jerry Galley would be good too, but I'm not sure what he gets up to nowadays. Loved seeing him randomly show up at comps and just destroy everything.
Another great BMX trip down memory lane, mate!
I used to race with Paul Roberts and Ross Hill back in the day 👍🚲💨
Enjoyed that
Nice work Marv.
Is there a Marv interview coming ?
Cheers Marv! Some burning questions answered there.
Enjoyed that one guys.
Cheers John as always. 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
Enjoying this, I can confirm John is was/is the saltiest dude out there 😄
Good stuff. I love any stories/explanations from behind the scenes 👍

The glory days. Used to look at Union back in the day and think "that's the hardcore".
