So I was returning from my gym late night and suddenly bike (a nice old used gazelle 24 speed) halted abruptly. My bike chain broke and luckily I was only about 15 min away from my home by then so I could walk back home. It was only when I reached my apartment garage that I noticed my rear derailleur dangling instead being attached to the bike frame. My best guess is that someone rammed their bike into the rear of my bike while it was left outside tye gym, and the full effect of it happened mid way during my return.
I for sure am planning to get a new chain, but don’t know if I should replace my derailleur as well. Do you think it is beyond repair?

Nah, that should buff right out.
That is an ex derailleur.. a has been. It has left this mortal realm. You have no choice but to replace it.
Also get you mech hanger alignment checked too as with a disassembly as catastrophic as that , it may well also be damaged.

jokes aside, get a new one. should be under 30 euro.
It’s never gonna recover from this.
Thank you all for confirming. Any suggestions for the replacement derailleur? I can’t find this one, Shimano Alivio 8 speed on Amazon. Would another Shimano 8 speed derailleur work?
