This is a route that I’ve been wanting to do for years now but didn’t think it would be possible on my road bike. For this cycle I used the NCN 75 from Glasgow towards Paisley going through Pollok park and along the white cart water. There is a railway bridge that goes over the white cart water that is over 200 years old. It was originally built to carry the paisley canal over it and was built in 1809. After this I talk passionately about the cycle network and how it uses old railway paths to create a linear park that stretches for miles connecting so many people. later on I talk about the lost 17 public artwork that’s just outside Kilmacolm and how it is the lost 17th Roman imperial army. The more information I find out about the Roman empire the more I want to know about it. When I get past Kilmacolm I then take an on road route up towards Gryffe reservoirs and loch Thom. This is where I find out that the terrain definitely isn’t suitable for a road bike but its so nice a route and worth the risk. There is also a good wee bit of climbing here as well. when I get to the loch I notice that there is a possibility of a great sunset when I get to Largs. When heading towards there we can see the island of Arran and Goatfell its biggest peak and one that I’ve yet to climb but always idolised from listening to the great Glasgow band Scheme and the song that’s named after the mountain. This was a great cycle and my longest and most rewarding of 2024 so far hopefully many more to come this year!
The White cart bridge/Blackhall viaduct hardly gets a mention in any website about old railway bridges. This could possibly be because it was a canal bridge before and that it was widened for the railway.

Hello there it’s same Friday 1 of March and I’m heading to I’ve had to wait an all day for something it didn’t come so bit late getting out 2:00 half two now I’ve already head to LS but at least try and here to LS
And plan is is to get to LS and get the train home should be a should be getting dark by the time I get there so this should be fun I’m going stay on the cycle path as much as I can then a single track roads to get to
WS a bit of breath already so looks like I’m going be take my time in there let’s enjoy so you can one of my favorite things about cycling through po Park is that you great go right through a forest trees and that’s on say it you see number
75 yeah it’s definitely one of my favorite BS and the path just follows a white car along this way towards paisy from poock Park to Paisley the national cycle Network route number 75 roughly follows the white cart water and The Paisley Canal Railway line I’ve cycled this
Route for years now and never really looked at into why there is a train station named Paisley Canal I assumed there was a canal connecting the railway line to the river C or the cart near this station what I didn’t know was that there was a canal on the route that the
Train takes today there are still bits of The Canal at certain sections along the side of the Railway that you can still see to this day what’s even more fascinating is a river cart Aqueduct this Aqueduct was built in 1809 to carry the canal over the white cart water when
The canal closed and the railway was built in its place the aqueduct was widened to accommodate the railway so technically this is the oldest bridge in the world that carries a passenger train service the line meanders through Paisley as it roughly follows the same route that the canal did 200 years ago
So a train just arriving at he can now at this station the train terminates and from here we get to carry on cycling on the national cycle Network number 75 this is a great creation of public space that’s been reclaimed from the Old disused Railway line it’s a blueprint
That makes a network so successful this is just a part of a vast Nationwide cycling Network that opens up a whole new world for people to exercise travel and enjoy nature as well as creating a linear Park that stretches for miles and miles to make a positive impact for so
Many people who live along the Route pass nice and quiet today think I’ve had that sweet spot where people aren’t quite ready to take the dogs out for a walk at this point the railway would have split with one lane going towards theay and the other would cross the
Black cart water here going as far as the port at Greeno this is the route I’m going to take today heading towards K MCO that has been be strengthened streng oh he structured now kind of think I’m currently cycling past a field that’s been treated oh my God raw Sage that’s what that
Is that’s nasty so still slowly climbing a ho just passing bridge over here passing through oh so tired and on the legs I’m even go back this way just now looking Dead Ahead that looks like a big sign it says half closed or something like
That is it just a cut in the trees I tell that’s definitely a sign in C Council that’s new the old signs actually a bit gutty that the information’s been taken off it founded by Emperor Augustus around the year 41 BC the 17th Legion of the Roman
Imperial Army disappeared in the year 9 ad after being sent to deal with Germanic tribes they were destroyed in the Battle of tberg forest and their Eagle standards were lost the eagle standards were recovered by the Romans in later years what was left of the Legion was deployed to britanica to deal
With the tribes north of Hadrian’s Wall urban legend states that they went to Scotland and disappeared near dumbartonshire this public artwork by David Kemp and Jack Dempsey is called the lost 17 after destruction the Romans never used this Legion number again sorry i’ I’ve not got a bell sorry cheers oh no oh
No he that this feels like the back tire flat that’s it it’s just a de on there I definitely feels like it’s flat has Bridge up ahead to me coming up to k m home but time is well payment accepted he this is where I come off the national psycho Network number
75 and going single track roads roads have never been on before which is exciting let’s bring it on starting to get a bit colder the well cut my cars go by Qui C this is it on there that’s what it’s going to be like CL after clim I come ready
CL so I got the speed Road for just about a minute and then back on a single Track Road like this I believe people are just been dumping all the rubbish in there I think I’ve been on this road before on a bike on a car see here a second back flasher
On here we go all right going this road for a few seconds out there CLS like that the know Road hey 17 minutes over the reservoirs and old large road is which what I’m looking for so I can get to that and then it’s m or less rolling
Right into LS nice trees in there this whole area just looks spooky on Google Maps but being even person that looks a lot worse oh that’s well there let G that was some else looking ahead looks like this Road’s going to get a bit bumpy a bit grally oh
Well technically it’s only for another so two Naes all right another 1 and A2 miles this not this 1 and a half mes this oh this is special I think I’ll keep that unced this is getting Beyond a joke be bit better for did not like cat sound this is glorious 5
Minutes 5 minutes this that’s a waterfall think here done so hey I’m coming up to the road something thought this would be a bit better suppose it is 2 minutes that’s beautiful here I can see on the map the old LS road is the road it’s a bit smoo than
This still single track but didn’t H all way that has been the sort of place you might be hanging up looks like got a promis in sunet just chilling on this relatively down hle back oh C waterfall in there nice this is what it’s all about getting to these quiet
But just like that and North sh oh oh here’s another bit there horrible horrible spot less effort to take these things to the bin scumbags hey I think that’s when you hit the highest spot still got halfway the Sun Goes then so probably a good Sunset is still there I’m banking on
That for my thumbnail I had to stop it a bit to change my battery but how stunning is this just as the lights coming over there there but the sun is just hting the hills over there I can see aen and goat there and all the Peaks there covered in snow
Which is just stunning and then they’ve got the glow like the sun just keep that ho and I’m going to get spot now I’ll get to see the sunset I think that’s guaranteed as well as a bag of chps when I get toen to get to as well as a bag of
Chps when I get to L wow Still the hes take that Going EX A A A

When I seen you were leaving the cycle route for the Auchentiber Road I thought Oh naw!! I went this way once. And never again. And I was on my mountain bike. Now if I go this way to Largs I just drop down and take the Esplanade and Shore Road. But that wouldn't be possible for you on such a late start. Brilliant video. Really enjoyed it.
Thanks
Great video and nice touches with the info on historical parts. 👌
Fab video ! You put such a lot of work into this, as you do with them all … a real labour of love . The sunset at the end is absolutely spectacular!
Also , the music is so perfect for the video , well done Chas, 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Awsone video, sunset is absolutely stunning. Music was perfect. You get better with every video. Largs tourist board should use this video to promote their loveiy seaside town.
Keep het Lit
Excellent video Charles. You're a brave man taking on the Auchentiber to Loch Thom road in March. I did it last summer having ridden up the NCR 7 from Kilbirnie. Nice info-piece on the "The Lost 17". I've passed them a few times and (shame on me!) often wondered what they were about!?. Now I know. Thank you.
brilliant run out and a fantastic reward at the end. love it!
Love Largs. Such a nice wee place. Wouldn’t mind doing that journey myself.
Fantastic video, very informative. Heart skipped when that car came at you on the single track.
Also hope you don’t mind me asking, what app are you using when your phone is in its mount?
What a wonderful sunset, I hope you got chips & a hassle free train journey after that route.
Always fun to see a mixture of routes I know & ones I dont. I love the Gourock run in the summer, only got as far as Inverkip that way before running out of daylight a couple of summers back.
It’s also fun to see what a different route you take to get to Pollok park, there’s clearly a wee bit more cycle infrastructure popped up on the south side. I’m just in Garnethill & that cycle route down Sauchiehall st gets journeys south off to a good start.
Can’t wait for spring to do it’s thing & start trying to get out the city on the bike.
Awesome video as always, I look forward to the next one.
Enjoyed that! Nice mix of drone footage, route information and historical details. I’m amazed you didn’t puncture going along the really rough sections. Look forward to next one 👍
Thanks for the video. I felt for you as you approached the gravel section. I've done this a couple of times on 40mm gravel tyres and it's bumpy enough 🙂
Wow watched it twice m8 amazing content 💯
Cracking ride! I know it well. I took my road bike down that forest track one time: never again! But I'm planning on trying it again on the gravel bike. Really interesting bit of history about the Paisley Canal railway line.
Oh goodie you’ve just pointed out a “road” I’ve not done. I’ve never done that Auchentiber road or along past the Gryffe Reservoir so I’ll be getting on to that!
Thanks for sharing.
Love the video.
You should do glasgow to Balloch cycle
Good stuff pal, loving the videos. Just getting back into cycling again after an injury and you’ve already got us doing train trips to ride areas 😂 do you have komoot or Strava? I’m not in competition and don’t like the Strava nonsense but it’s good to see gpx routes. Keep up the content.
