Heading out on a 3 day back country bike-packing tour this weekend. Im carrying all my calories with me, which is mainly those dehydrated single serve meals you get at outdoor shops. To save weight I’m considering ditching my MSR whisper light stove and fuel. I’m thinking of just adding cold water to the pouch a couple hours before meal times instead of boiling water to rehydrating in the prescribed 10-15 mins. Hot water is nice, but so is the forecast. Anyone tried this?

Pretty sure it would take longer, but I think it would work. Might taste funny, depending on the meal.

  2. Just take a small black ziplock bag, put the water in and leave it in the sun, or a regular ziplock and put it on a hot rock. Better than stream temp.

Some do some don’t. I haven’t tried that many so I couldn’t say if its the brand or the meal but one I tried was ready in 2-3 hours, one was about 8h and one was still not hydtrated after 24h.
