hey y’all, been putting this off since i messed up my first attempt but im ready to get this going again. i wanted to see if anybody had some tips/advice on this wheel build. this is my second wheel build so im still new to the whole process.

i’m building a wheel set with 32h Raketa hubs laced to Hydra hoops. don’t remember the spoke brand but the spoke nipples are DT Swiss standard 2.0.

i’m doing a 3 cross pattern on both wheels.

on my first attempt, i was at the last steps on each wheel. i had laterally trued both wheels and only had a hop to correct on each wheel. that was when i stripped several spokes on both wheels as i tried to correct the hop.

i’m currently replacing the stripped nipples and will be ready to attempt truing the wheels soon.

i used spoke powder and put a drop of lubricant on each spoke nipple.

one thing that i did that i think may have contributed to the spoke nipples stripping was that i got the tension of each spoke around 20 before i started laterally truing. i did not go straight to 20 though. i did a couple of turns on each spoke nipple until i gradually made all the spoke nipples around 20. i realized that probably wasn’t the best method but idk, maybe that didn’t contribute to the spoke nipples stripping.

  1. Aluminum nipples are much easier to strip than brass ones so you need to be careful. Make sure you have the correct spoke wrench size. There should be little to no play when tightening the nipples.

    I build my wheels in this order. Get all the spokes to a “working tension” maybe around 10 (?) on a park tension meter. I get the wheel dished, get it in round and then true laterally in that order. Doesn’t have to be perfect at such low tension but pretty close.

    Then I detension the spokes by pushing the wheel on both sides of the hub axle on the ground.

    Then I slowly bring up the tension (usually a quarter turn) and again dish it, get it round and true it.

    I repeat this process several times until the tension is good.
