Over the past couple of years Portugal has been marketed as the cheapest European destination to come and live in however it is not that cheap let me tell you for a fact from my own experience it’s not that cheap and so today’s video is going to be a breakdown of what
Exactly to expect in terms of General expenses uh day-to-day expenses as well as housing so give this uh video a thumbs up it helps my channel obviously I will talk about the cost of living in one of the most sought out cities which is Lisbon which is the capital of
Portugal so stick around until the varant so the first thing that you will notice when you come to Lisbon is that the cost of transportation is actually quite low and in fact for a single ride in a Metro or even a bus could cost you
Anything from €150 all the way to €2 or €250 depending on where you’re going and which type of transport you’re actually using I will convert that into Kenya Shillings for anyone who is listening to me from Kenya so that you can exactly understand what I mean now for a
Transport uh card for within Lisbon you can get one for €0 per month and this €30 per month will give you access to all the public transport means in Lisbon Central so that means the Metro the Trum the bus and you can use this card within Lisbon Central and and however I would
Recommend for you to get the €40 monthly pass that gives you access to Lisbon Central as well as the metropolitan area so that is setubal CRA kashkash if you want to go outside of Lisbon you can use the same pass for €40 per month and gives you access to all
Public transport um you know means once again whether you want to use a bus the Metro the Train the ferry and so on and so forth so this is the the most recommended the best card I can recommend to anyone who is listening to this and now you also notice that it is
Quite affordable to use uh things like bolts Ubers scooters bicycles uh in Lisbon Central and however as much as the city is not quite uh built for cycling because of the so many cobal uh streets it is very affordable so you can get an Uber ride for as low as €3 uh all
The way to however much depending on where you’re going when you took the Uber and you know if there’s a surge and so on and so forth so you can expect it to be as low as possible you can also have access to the regular taxes and they also cost quite quite affordable
However be very careful about the meter because you might arrive at your destination and the meter is all the way up and not what you actually expected now the other biggest cost the biggest cost in Lisbon is going to be housing so housing we can never talk enough about
The cost of housing in Lisbon and in fact there is definitely a crisis in housing in Lisbon so if you’re looking to live in Lisbon Central which I would not recommend however if you want to live in Lisbon Central you can expect to have uh the cost of a shared apartment
For example um going anything from 400 if you’re lucky 350 400 per month if you’re lucky all the way to 600 or even 7 00 per month and this may or may not be inclusive of the utility bills which means that the electricity the internet
The water could be also on you so be very careful when you’re looking for houses and what I mean by a shared apartment is the fact that you would get your own bedroom and then you can share the other common areas I know for Kenyans who are listening to this this
Might sound like a mindboggling thing but this is very common in the European cities that you will go to which means that you will have your own bedroom and you can share the kitchen as well as maybe the living area and the bathrooms and so on and so forth so for Lisbon
Central you can expect this cost to be €400 all the way to 600 or 800 depending on where you want to live the type of house the area you want to live in as well so you can expect that cost to be as high as that however if you want like
A one-bedroom house if you’re lucky enough you will get one maybe for €800 all the way 1,200 or 1,500 depending on again where you want to live and the type of house and the requirements of the landl and so on and so forth so that’s a crisis on its own so I do
Recommend to actually live away from Lisbon if you look for houses just a little away from Lisbon that this cost goes all the way down again depending on the landlord and the area so you can check on um you know legit websites and see the cost of living in whatever the
Other area and this is what I would recommend you know because you can use the uh transport card the 40o transport card to commute between Lisbon and these areas which are actually outside of Lisbon so this Cuts your cost significantly now another major cost that you might think about is the
Utilities so depending on how much you use um and one thing that you will notice is that Portuguese houses are rarely insulated so unless you’re very lucky you will not find a Portuguese house with insulation which means that during the winter months and the summer
Months you might want to use a heater or a fun and so this will could drive your electricity bill all the way up so you can expect your electricity bill if you don’t use a heater or a fun then you can expect it to be maybe € or thereabouts
But if you use one then it could go all the way up to 50 100 depending on your utility as well the other thing that you would expect is the internet as well as the phone bill most of the companies here have plans that include both so
Which means that you can uh have your phone uh bill as well as your internet bill uh really connected and which means that you can get it for as low as 30 uh all the way to €50 depending on what plan you actually took this includes
Also internet as well as the TV your phone your calls and also roaming because you can be able to roam Within Europe using the same phone number that you have so this is actually a cool thing another thing that you want to also expect is that the gas prices could
Go all the way up again factor in that you might want to check your house whether you know the water is being um heated using electricity or gas and then you can be able to regulate your usage as well as your cost in the long run now
For groceries it can be quite quite uh affordable and especially if depending on how much you consume and your dietary preferences and whether you want to splurge um and whether you want to go eat out all the time that is dependent on you however for groceries on a typical nonexpensive or rather
Affordable uh Supermarket which is Pingo do you can uh find yourself going for anything between €40 per week all the way to €100 per week it also depends on how many people you are in your household and whether you like to eat premium stuff or you want to cut down
Your cost I will tell you for free that it is not as um cheap nowadays because um the taxes are all the way up and so you can expect however to have that cost right now between €40 to 50 per week all the way to €100 per week for groceries
Um and once again this is very very dependent on you you can find yourself cutting this cost especially if you go to local groceries um which are located pretty much on every corner in Lisbon so groceries are not difficult to find here and you can find quite a variety of
Groceries on any other shop that you will U typically find in fact you’ll also find African uh stuff African spices if you’re listening to this obviously from Kenya and you’re wondering whether you can find flour you know the maze flour that we use in Kenya no you will not find the same exact
Taste but you will find a version of it from the African countries here Angola mosm and so on and so forth so you might want to think about coming with some if you’re coming from Kenya now another thing that you definitely want to think about is Leisure or you know if you want
To eat out I will tell you for a fact if you want to eat out um there’s what we call pra which is the menu of the day in some restaurants which goes for something like € all the way to €10 however if you want to eat out in
Another place um you know a porh place or sit down it could go all the way from € 15 to €20 or 30 uh a coffee could cost anything from €0.5 which is uh 50 cents rather all the way to 3 depending on where you actually
Buy it from if you want to go for things like a museums on the first Sunday of the month museums are usually are for free especially in places like Belling and you can easily go and have your leisure time there for free if you want
To go on any other day it could cost from €5 to €10 which is quite an affordable cost honestly speaking if you also want to go out and have some some parties you can find night outs going for things like 5 depending on where you’re going again all the way up to
However much you want to spend that is up to you but if you’re thinking of your if you’re a person who drinks alcohol home then alcohol in this country is actually uh quite quite affordable so that is obviously up to you um in whether you want to indulge or not now
This is definitely just a very general video of what exactly to expect when you’re coming to Lisbon in terms of Transport daily uh life if you have a car for instance you can expect the gas prices to keep on fluctuating especially nowadays and at the time of recording of
This video the gas prices were anything between €1 1.7 to 1 9 per liter depending on the car depending on where you’re going you can also expect to have tools uh on various uh cities especially if you’re driving from like places like lisborn to setubal LA or lisborn to
Kashkash or lisborn to SRA if you’re driving then you can expect to have tall fees which you should factor in ahead of time and you can check about this depending on the direction that you’re taking so I do hope that this little video has uh opened up your mind a
Little bit of what exactly to expect and bearing the fact that the minimum wage right now stands at 820 you might want to think exactly what you want to come and do factor in maybe the salary that you would want to uh have especially for those people who are
Coming in with uh visas Tech visas D2 visas uh D7 visas for independent people and passive income people you might want to think about exactly what uh would be your budget again depending on you and so on and so forth I do hope that this video has been helpful to you and if
