So I’m in an interim housing facility, (only mentioned for context. One of the other residents was asking if I knew how to fix bikes and I asked him if I could post a question about it on Reddit.

He says that the gears don’t switch correctly. They either shift to the uphill gear so it’s too hard to pedal, or staight to the downhill doing and then it’s too loose. Can’t seem to make it shift to the middle setting. Does anyone know how to fix this? I posted all the pictures I thought would be relevant.

These are non-indexed friction shifters, you control how much cable they pulls and must delicatly pull/push them until the shift occurs (and sometimes back off a little if the chain wants to jump to another gear, it’s almost a lost art! 😅)

Try tightening the friction adjustment on the shifters; black plastic part with two ears on the sides of either shifter.

Too loose and the shifter won’t stay in place, too stiff and you won’t be able to shift.
