A few months ago I left my bike in a (heated) garage while I took a break from cycling over the winter. I didn’t clean it before leaving it, but I didn’t think I’d done anything especially dirty with it on the last couple of rides. Went to take it back out the other day and found the chain kinked like this. It wouldn’t run, as these kinks feel “hard baked” into the chain (they are where the chain had been resting on the big ring of the front derailleur, I got it to move a little by shifting to the smallest ring but couldn’t get it to move any further). I put some of the dry lube I had handy onto the parts of the chain most affected, but no improvement. Should I give it some kind of bath or what, to see if it could be salvaged? The drivetrain was running fine when I put it away in December. The chain was relatively new. (I really don’t want to have to end up changing the freewheel as it’s very hard to find a 7-speed freewheel now that goes down to 12t.)

That shit is frozen good. You may be able to loosen it by twisting them back and forth. But it’ll be quicker just to put a new chain on.
