you need a new barrel adjuster, which is the part between the cable and the lever. probably easier to just buy a whole new lever.

Definitely not.
The barrel adjuster is all you need and it and the jamb nut on it are slotted so you don’t even need to mess with the cable.
Take this one to a bike shop and see if they have another one. If they don’t and you have to replace the whole lever, it’s still not that big of a project.

The only tricky part with replacing that adjuster is if the threads in the plastic housing are hosed.
You may have to replace the whole lever, but just think of it as an upgrade.

Upvoting for visibility because stuff like this is good for the sub. You can easily repair that yourself with no previous skills as long as you can be a good student of online tutorials. Look up how to change a brake cable on YouTube or another platform I suppose.
You will need a replacement barrel adjuster + nut. Here is a link to a similar part. You should measure the existing one or check the manufacturer online to make sure you get the right size

Fairly basic fix on the technical scale.
A possible complication could be that the lever bracket threads may be a little smacked around and need some chasing.

This should be fairly easy. First you will want to remove the barrel adjuster (deformed silver part). This metal is pretty malleable so you could probably cut or pry chunks off, just be careful not to damage the cable inside. The replacement parts have a slit that allows you to just drop it over the cable in the same spot, no need to remove the whole cable etc.
Both removing and replacing the part will be easier if the brake isn’t under tension- see if your brakes have a quick disconnect. If not, you’ll just have to loosen the cable pinch bolt to add slack to the line.

As a fellow dad, I did this exact repair on my kid’s bike. I took him down to the bike co-op where they had a bin full of used cable adjusters.
