Besides the lock ring tool, be sure to use a torque wrench, to make sure the lock is correctly tightened.

If in an emergency and you have dirt cheap needle nose pliers, a metal file, and a long screwdriver, you can file the tip just enough so it can fully fit the lockring’s notches. If the pliers’ tips are narrow enough to fully engage, no filing is needed.
You can then press both filed tips on opposite notches so that each tip is snug between a notch and the axle nut.
To properly turn the pliers you can wedge the screwdriver inside the jaw and wrench away.
Source: I’ve done it in an emergency where my buddy’s cassette lockring loosened in the middle of a ride and all I had in my pannier bag that I could use was weirdly a pair of needle nose pliers, a small file, and a basic hex multitool 😂😂
