I’d argue that you can more easily meet people due to the opportunities brought by digital maps. For example, the main roads in many parts of the world see a lot of travelers, you aren’t special there. At the same time, the tiny tracks through the remote countryside or mountains, where people will be happy to talk to you for hours or invite you into their home, might barely be shown on paper maps, or it would be too risky to try them. On OSM-based apps, however, you can see much more detail for minor roads and tracks and better decide whether you should venture them.
I always carry a paper map with me of the country I’m going to, its a great way of getting an overview that isnt really posible with digital maps on a phone screen. I draw on my daily route, or an approximation of it, at the end of the day and maybe put an X for my camp spot.
They’re great for showing interested people you meet where you have been and in some places the people you meet may never have seen a map of their own country.
Michelin maps often show extra useful details like typical snow closure months for mountain passes and scenic routes. But something like OSM cycle on RWGPS is invaluable for route finding beyond the main road network.
