i don’t know much at all about bikes, more into skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing amongst other things. i’ve ridden before, but always on shitty bikes that have been free that i’ve just painted and lived with. it’s probably necessary to know that im really only interested in dirt jumping, but dirt jumpers are way out of my price range. im really just looking to roll around and jump with friends so nothing too serious is needed. i found a $150 haro shredder 20 on facebook marketplace and im wondering if this could be a decent deal. any help?

That is a youth size bike. And a very very low end one. I’d keep looking
You want to find something with a 20.75 or 21” top tube probably. FIT bikes has some pretty decent completes. I’d at least check out their website to get a better idea of what to be looking for.
Things to look for to identity a bmx bike if you’re unsure . A small sprocket , 3 piece crank (the metal arms that the pedals connect to are much thicker) , smaller seat lowered on a angle , larger handle bars , colored grips and pedals , usually a single brake line . These common possibilities not every bmx bike checks every thing I listed but most do . If this doesn’t help search bmx bikes and see some examples on google . Happy riding stay safe .
Try watching some “how to pick” videos on youtube, they can get you pointed in the right direction on what to find and look for with visual queues. You’ll want chromoly frame/fork/bars, 3 pc cranks, double wall rims are a must, sub 30T sprockets (25-28 most common) a 20.75″ + top tube, and 9″ or so rise bars. Used market is good for getting quality on a budget but if buying new, expect to drop some dough, around $5-600+ on the low end (some will check most boxes) for online and then add a 100 or so extra to that if buying from a local shop. The Mongoose L500 has pretty decent bang for buck, checks most the boxes but you kinda get what you pay for and expect to break some things on it as you learn, they got to save cost somewhere to keep it at a price point with the specs it claims. Set some aside for a helmet if you can get past looking a little silly. Good luck friend!
