Clean the drivetrain and don’t go crazy with the lube. Wipe the chain plenty. If you see the lube on the outside of the chain, it’s not doing you anything but making a dirt/oil liquid sandpaper. Lube matters between links, rollers, and pins. Those are all internal parts and a rag will not wipe inside the chain.
