The new Culture ebike from Riese & Müller is here, so we took it to Bath to see how it performed in an urban environment. Dan rode the touring specification (chain and cassette) with the suspension upgrade and found it’s a super fast ebike that looks and rides more like a classic bike but with all the benefits of an ebike.

Hello I’m Dan from edmo electric bikes and today we’ve come to Bath and we are doing a full review of the new culture from Reesa Müller apart from this bike looking incredibly good I guess the questions are what is going to be different about it and what’s special about it we’re going to run through that in some detail work our way from the front of the bike all the way to the back pick out

Everything and tell you all the details you need to know about this bike if you’re thinking of buying it one of the key things about this bike you’ll notice the style of the bike is quite different to some of the other stuff from RE M that we’ve seen out there so we’ve got

This really nice shaped top tube that’s coming here it’s dropped down and there’s a reason for that it’s so that we can get this um handlebar or stem a lot higher up which means we get a really comfortable upright riding position and that’s because this bike is

Intended to be for commuting or town use or sort of light Leisure use and it gives gives you a really nice comfortable position where you can sit around sit around you can sit around as much as you like you can sit up and look around and see everything that’s going

On that’s been coupled with a handlebar that is slightly swept back as well so again it’s pushing you up into this position and I guess it’s a bit like um sort of a Dutch bike sort of style thing so upright comfortable uh riding so it’s an aluminium frame bike but the

Aluminium that they’ve used on this is actually about 50% recycled and Rees and Müller have started a program with a manufacturer of aluminium tube where they take in recy or take in aluminium recycle it and they turn it into these tubes so there’s loads of things on this bike that is really sustainable

Environmentally friendly and gets lots of ticks in the box from Reese and Müller looking at the bike uh let’s start at the end of it and go through all the various bits that we’ve got so first of all wheels on this bike so this is bike has got 28 in Wheels now they’re

Fitted with a Schwalbe Big Ben um tires so it’s slightly narrower than the GT bikes that we sometimes look at but it’s actually the the same Tire as the non GT bikes on all the other range so they’re really nice Wheels quite large wheel but when you’re riding on the road they roll

Really really well and I’ve been riding it this morning doing a bit of canal pass around town and everything um and it requires very little effort to get them up and spinning and rolling along obviously as with reer bikes we’re fitted with mugg guards front and uh

Rear as standard that’s on there this bike has got one of the options the standard bike would have a fixed Fork on here so no suspension it would have no suspension on seat post as well um this bike has got the suspension on it it’s an option that I think is around about

£94 um and it’s both the fork and the the saddle here and it’s kind of I would say one of those things that you’re going to want to have if you’re doing town riding especially in the UK because of the number of potholes and everything

We’ve got so it just makes the ride a little bit more softer and a little bit more comfortable obviously fitted with lights are standard again it’s a Recon Muller you’re going to have these so you’ve got a front light and you’ve got a rear light that is actually integrated

Into the rear guard as well it looks really good that one the brakes on this one are hydraulic disc brakes they’re made by mura again but they’re not as high spec as the ones that we’d see on some of the bikes like the super Delights and the homages and

The superchargers and the charger Falls these are called a mura I think they’re an A2 or something so they’re they lower spec bike lower spec brake but to be honest on this bike you wouldn’t even realize they were any different you don’t need anything more and they are

Huge stopping power for what you need moving up the bike a little bit um looking at the handle bars one really good thing on this um bike now normally Reese Müller will fit a little black Bell it’s called a billy Bell or something like that um on the handlebars

It’s pretty basic but it tis a box for um requirements that you have to have a bell on your bike uh this one they fitted something a little bell made by a manufacturer called oi and I’ve seen these a few years ago they’re really really nice bells and they were

Massively expensive so I never bought myself one but I’ve just seen these um cultures turning up and they’ve got them fitted and I don’t know if you can hear this at all but it like makes a real a noise that just like goes on and on and on so

Really nice Bell that’s sitting on there so that’s not the highlight of the bike but I particularly like it so the version that we’ve gone for is um on this test bike it’s called the touring version it’s got a chain cassette um on the back so that means it’s got trigger

Shift Under The Handlebar so this is finger click to go up again thumb push to go down um and then there’s pretty much nothing else on these handlebars it’s designed to be minimal so it’s meant to look like a bike not an ebike with everything going on and that means

There’s no display here in the middle so we’ve got rid of so there’s no display in the middle so so we’ve got rid of everything Across The Handlebar here and but what we have got on the left hand side is the buttons to turn the bike on and off now this

Bike is fitted with a Bosch smart system I’ll come to the motor in the battery in a minute but the smart system means as standing we’re going to have up here the LED remote and on that led remote you can pretty much find all the information

You need to tell about your bike so you can tell what power setting you’re in you can tell how much battery’s left you can change the uh assistance level and that’s pretty much all you need to do so it will just ride like a bike if you

Want you can actually upgrade this um LED remote to something called a Pon 200 and the pon 200 has the same sort of shape to it but off to the right hand side it just has a little um LED display that gives you more information so it’s

Like a miniature um version of the K and stuff that here that just give you things like speed which I guess most people might want to know but to be honest I’m not really interested in speed when I’ve been riding it around it makes no difference because you’re just

Going with the speed of the traffic it does have a weird little fitting on the stem so just here is a little attachment um it’s called an SP connect fitting um you can buy a a case for your um smartphone put your smartphone into it and they can actually clip your phone

Onto the handlebars here now if you do that you use the Bosch Flow app and you can then get all of the information for your bike and it will include things like satnav and everything and you just have your phone sitting in front of you here um to be honest I’m quite enjoying

It with none of that is a simple bike uh really easy going and forget all the tech and everything it’s been quite Enjoyable oh no we could have got through that piece of piss for us moving a bit further down the frame so colors of the frame so um this one has a great name this color is called biscuit it’s also available on this frame in a denim now this is the

Standard frame they also do a a lower step frame so a frame that comes down this sort of shape um and that frame is available in a color called Blossom and denim so two colors on each bike um and typical R Muller don’t like to com change them across both shapes of Fame

Just to try and make it confusing for us now this bike to keep it light it’s this particular one I think is 21.9 kg so about 22 kg it’s got in it the new Bosch SX motor now the Bosch SX motor is a 55 newm Motor so a little bit lower than

The other motor as we’ve seen on some of the other um bikes out this still 250 wats and still a peak of 600 watts so you’re getting more than enough power um but it’s a lighter weight motor this motor weighs 2 kg compared to the 2.9 kg

Weight of the performance line CX motor they then combine that with a battery in here that is 400 watts rather than the 625 or the um 750 W batteries um and that battery only weighs 2 kg so what what you’re finding is you’re going to get a really light bike because all of

These components in here are driven down and the power of this motor for the type of stuff we’re doing the sort of the town riding the commuting the bridal ways and everything that is absolutely fine it does everything we’ve also taken this bike up the steepest hill right by

The shop and we still get up that no problem at all so you’re not going to have any concerns with the power of the U the motor at all um and it works really well in this bike where we’re trying to keep the weight of it down so

When we were riding the culture earlier we were riding through the the tunnels and stuff the two tunnels we started to realize normally with a Bosch motor when you get up to a certain speed sort of 15 and a half mile or an hour up to 17 it

Fades out and you can really feel the weight of the bike kicking in it’s sort of you hit this wall and that’s where you sit with the culture where it’s lighter and there is pretty much zero resistance on that motor as well we got

Up past at the 15 1 half mph and I just kept on on going and I had those nice narrow 28 in Wheels pumped up nice and hard I was flying through those tunnels so really really fast really quiet really efficient um it’s a great bike if

You’re if you’re the sort of person that likes bikes but you’re not 100% wanting the allout ebike then the culture is a great solution to go for one thing I would point out um it’s a quite a nice design feature that all of this is completely ser

The downside of it is the battery is in the frame here now that has a plus and a minus um it means you can’t take the battery off the bike to charge in the house but the bike is lighter so technically you can put it in your

Hallway if you’re going to plug it in um but it does make it harder if somebody wants to take the battery it’s not going to come off the frame they can’t break it out the frame it’s sealed in there and it needs to be removed I guess it

Gets removed out past the the motor down the bottom in the shop in the shop if we ever need to which is highly unlikely you can’t see it from that side but on here there’s a lovely little cover um for the battery charging point it’s got a little cap that swings around closed

On it um so you’re going to charge your battery on the bike on this one it’s probably going to take you 2 or 3 hours to charge it up in total 400 W hour probably on something like this it’s going to give you about 40 Mi town

Riding um you can actually buy an additional battery it’s called the it’s it’s made by Bosch it’s called the Bosch power Mo 250 something like that um and it fits onto these um lugs that you’ve got here that are the water bottle lugs um and it has a nice little bag as well

That goes with it it’s 466 it’s 250 Watts so the two of those combined you’ve got 650 wour battery good for 60 mies so if at the weekends you want to go and ride a little bit further slap one of those on and you can

Be gone for the whole day to do your riding so moving back along the biker again uh next thing to look at is the seat post now on the standard bike there’s going to be fixed seat post here but because this one has the option of

The suspension kit which I think is £94 it includes a suspension saddle that I don’t know if you can see has just got a little bit of give so as you hit the potholes it just softens it as you go along really really nice you get things

Like this on the Tinkers and a few other bikes um it makes them far more comfortable so I think this is a great option the combination of that seat post and those uh Forks whil we’re looking at the seat post here we can see it we got it set reasonably High that’s because

I’m riding this bike today so I’m 6’1 and this bike it comes in three different sizes it comes in a 50 cm a 56 cm and a 62 CM frame and I think they’re suitable for anybody from 1 M 60 up to 2 m so really I should be on the size up

This is the middle-sized one so this is a 56 CM frame it’s actually they feel like quite big bikes when when you ride them um so I’m quite happy on this but I imagine if I went for the next size up I might be able to drop that saddle a bit

Which might mean that I get my handlebars a bit higher up again it might be a bit more comfortable but having said that 6’1 on the um 56 CM frame I’m not going to be upset if uh if this is the one I have to ride for the

Rest of my life so three sizes anyway so and we can guide you and we can help you choose the right size bike we can do all that for you moving over to the back of the bike so this is an important part of this bike so um the gearing that’s on it

Now there’s three different options that you can go for you can go for a chain of cassette which is this one that’s called touring you can go for one with a Nexus 8-speed Hub and that’s called a silent or you can go for one with a enva hub

And that’s called the Vero this bike as it is excluding the seat post and the um Forks starts at 3,789 if you go up to the silent version so you have the Nexus 8-speed Hub so an internal Hub with a belt drive that’s going to add about £300 to the price and

If you go up again then to the molo Hub so an internal continuously variable Hub in there that adds another2 200 so about A500 option for the varal Hub or a 300 option for the Nexus 8-speed Hub last two ones both have belt drives on them so they are brilliant for town riding

Because you’re not going to be doing any maintenance so there’s no oiling no index of the gears however having said that this bike is the cheaper version of the bike um and it has a massive cassette on there so that is an 1148 to um cassette that’s on there so I don’t

Know if you can see but it’s got a huge chain ring on the back um that gearing is massive and it’s the biggest range of Gears out of the three bikes available so if you live in a more hilly area and you know you’re going to be having to do

Some massive climbs this is a really nice option um having said that the um Nexus and the molo we ride them around by us we’re in the cotwolds and we don’t have any problems at all so they’re all capable but if you think you’re really

Going to go for it go for this one downside of a chain cassette is you have got to do the maintenance of it but it is a little bit lighter than some of the other options that are out there I’m riding it today and I’m loving it it’s a really really nice

Option Dan are you are you are you cold is it really cold can you tell oh it’s really warm out here oh God I’m really conscious everybody’s looking at my nipples now thank you sorry Um uh oh yeah another option on this bike so um so one of the options um that I think everybody should really put on this bike and I think it’s going to be hugely practical is the rear carrier so a rear carrier on this one is going to

Cost you an additional 75 but it does carry 27 kg and it’s got an mik adapter now mik adapter means that if you’ve got a child seat or something with a special fitting you can clip it straight onto the rear of here and it’s going to carry

27 kg that’s a huge amount for a bike that is essentially just a city bike um so £75 for that rear carrier I kind of would go for that but then again if you are looking at just it’s you just riding this backwards and forwards to work

Forget all that get rid of everything and go for the really lightweight version um and that’s probably going to be slightly more carrier is going to be really good as well though if you decide you’re going to use this at the weekend getting your sweaty Rock sack off your back and

Getting it clipped on paneers on the back and you’re going to do that 60 o miles tour of all the pubs and cafes uh you’re going to really appreciate a carrier on it last option on this bike there’s five in total the last option is

To have fitted a um a cafe lock so a lock um that slips through the the wheel to stop the wheel turning um it’s 47 quid to put it on there it’s an it’s a good oh I was going to say it’s an okay lock it’s a good lock but I’m not 100%

Sure it’s going to do what you necessarily need it to do so this is a town bike you’re going to leave it in town you’re going to leave it locked up so key is that you put a really good quality lock onto it which brings me on

Nicely um to remind you that when you buy a bike from us we’re going to provide you with the edmo advanced package now that package is going to come with a gold rated insurance rated lock worth 150 quid it’s an abis bordo Granite lock UH 60 days of free

Insurance with lacquer um we’re also going to put the connect module on the Bosch um connect module that goes onto these which gives you a GPS tracker and alarm so all of that in together combined with us delivering it personally to you as well um is an epic

Package on this bike to make it the best commuity you can possibly have so I would be thinking about the option of the lock from Reesa Müller maybe don’t bother because we’re going to give you one that’s 10 times as good on your bike as standard at no CH no charge it’s a

Package worth 630 quid and we’re giving it to you free of charge with every new bike that we sell for people who are interested in bikes or sort of town bikes and all the fancy stuff that’s out there there’s a brand out there or was a

Brand out there I think it might still exist might be coming back at some point called vanm um and vanm make a really cool looking bike go and have a look at them and you’ll see it’s very similar to this with the shape of the the tubes and

Everything and I get the feeling that um a couple of years ago Rees M were looking at making um some bikes where they wanted to compete against people like uh van mu and cowboy and they were looking at the designs in everything and saying you know how are these guys

Making these bikes so cheap we now know how they were making them so cheap van Mo sadly went bust um but Reese and Müller have been desperately trying to make a bike like it they made their urbans that or the ubn rang of bikes and they put the fatsu motors in them they

Were good they were lightweight bikes they were nice they looked like bikes but they didn’t stand out as something different this time I think Reese and Müller have got it right so they’ve made something that looks really cool so it fits in you know where it’s supposed to

Um but it’s also phenomenally good because they’ve gone and put things like Bosch motors on them as well they’ve put their enviolo hubs and Nexus hubs they got this great um Shimano 10-speed Q’s um derer own cassette on the back um so just made a really really nice version

Of it and it starts from £ 3,789 top spec of this bike I think is around about 5,000 um and then you get all the bits and pieces that you might want as well so if you like the look of this bike um and you’re thinking of buying one we

Have two bikes available um for test ride we’ve got this one and the lowest step through I think the lowest step is the blossom color version of it and I think it has the varial Hub as well uh they’re both available to test ride in on nailsworth showroom all you need to

Do is pick up the phone or get on the internet uh through the website or what all that stuff is press the buttons and book yourself a space and come and have a go on one these are really really lovely bikes um and I’m looking forward to adding one of these to my Collection
