I’ve done my last couple of tours with just two panniers, and loading my tent, sleeping pad, lock and miscellaneous clothes that need to be dried all on the back rack.

I like having just two bags because they are easier to manage, take on/off and travel with. But this doesn’t seem to be the most efficient distribution of weight. I was definitely suffering up some mountains on my last tour and having issues in wet areas with these 30-35lbs all in the back.

For my next tour I wanted to get a front handlebar bag to displace some of the weight, I have a front rack/panniers, but I’d prefer not to use it.

I’ve seen some good suggestions in this forum for handlebar bags, but some seem like more of a pouch than anything that could take maybe 7-10 lbs off of the back rack. And then what would you suggest to keep in this front bag? Is it simple weight displacement or do you like to have some easily accessible items up there? Also, it would be great if it’s something that detaches easily so I don’t have to leave it on all the time.

Thanks for the insight and discussion here!

  1. You have the eyelets, so my guess is that 90% of front racks and 90% of front panniers will work for you.

But if you want to be really sure just go to a local bike shop with your bike and buy them there.

You will certainly find more choices online, if you have weight vs strength vs looks requirements.

  2. I’d do panniers.

Handlebar bags put the weight up high and will mess with your steering more. Small front bags are great. I usually keep my cook set and bathroom stuff in them.
